A Time to Remember...Memorial Day 2009

The Adrian VFW Post 1935 held their annual Memorial Day Services at Crescent Hill Cemetery last Saturday morning. The morning was bright and full of sunshine, and absolutely perfect for the 30+ veterans who were present, along with about 75 guests of all ages.
After an opening prayer from Pastor Lance Loughridge (Victory Assembly of God), VFW Service Officer/Chaplain Don Arndt welcomed everyone and offered thanks to those who helped make the service possible. He thanked the veterans for placing 200 flags along the roadways of the cemetery (pictured far right), and for putting flags on the gravesites of the veterans who have passed on.
The laying of the wreaths ceremony was emotional and poignant (pictured right). It symbolized a deep gratitude and respect for the men and women who served in the United States military but are no longer with us.
Bob Moles, VFW Adjutant, offered special recognition to the WW II veterans in attendance. He referred to them as “the greatest generation who helped build a nation.” Bob asked for the WW II vets to stand and be recognized (middle picture). As the men stood, the crowd applauded in appreciation of their service.
In closing, Steve Hubbard thanked everyone for attending, and talked about the new memorial under construction near the City Park. He assured the crowd that the existing memorial at the cemetery will be taken care of. Steve asked for everyone to spread the word about the memorial, and to help find veterans who have served or died in all of Bates County. “We don’t want to lose a part of history or we will lose a part of us,” Steve said.
Pastor Loughridge said a final prayer and the memorial service came to a close.
