September 11...Adrian remembers

By SHARON KIESEL
Friday, September 11, 2009 marked the eighth anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks on American soil. Over 3000 civilians, firefighters, police officers, military and emergency personnel died in that attack. Although the people and the land hardest hit were on the east coast, everyone’s lives and daily living were deeply impacted by the attacks.
In Adrian, Fire Chief Gary Dizney and the Adrian Volunteer Fire Department have worked hard to keep the 9/11 remembrance alive for the past seven years, by way of a solemn processional of emergency and military vehicles and a moving program at the parade’s end.
The program was well represented by all areas of police, fire, medical, military and emergency personnel and by area citizens who came to see and listen to the moving speeches, music and video tributes.
“United, we grieve for the 3000 innocent men, women and children who perished in those surprise attacks against our nation” said Sheriff Anderson. “And I’m talking about the thousands of military men and women that continue to perish in the following wars.”
“From the tragedy of the 9/11 attacks,” Chief Dizney added, “America has found scores of new heroes. Heroes who have been keeping America safe for years - the police officers and firefighters who sacrificed all. I’m talking about everyday people who were not going to let terrorists succeed in toppling the greatest nation in the world.”
In his closing remarks, Chief Dizney praised all the surrounding departments for their help with this special ceremony. “We really appreciate everyone who attended and who supports what we’re doing,” he added after the program. “We appreciate everyone being here and helping us to keep 9/11 in everyone’s heart, in memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.”
