Oratorical contestants talk about “Cyber Communication”

The Adrian Optimist Club sponsored an Oratorical Contest for Adrian 8th graders on February 21, 2010. Nine contestants prepared and delivered speeches on “Cyber Communication - Progress of Problem.” Speeches were judged on poise, content, delivery and presentation, and overall effectiveness.

The first place oratorical winner was Maykna Six, daughter of Cary and Lara Six. In second place was Ryland Howard, son of Leslie Howard. Taking third was Nathan Chamberlain, son of Jason and Tracy Chamberlain. Makyna and Ryland will be competing in the Zone Oratorical Contest against students from Clinton, Pleasant Hill and Harrisonville. Zone winners will advance to regionals then districts to compete for a $1500 scholarship.

Co-chairing the contest were Optimist members Hugh Jenkins and Cary Six. The judges were: Wendy Courter, 4th Grade Title I Math Teacher, Harrisonville School District; Marlene Wainscott, Bates County Clerk; and Michele Burris, Managing Editor, Adrian Journal.
