This past year started off shaky, literally, as several powerful earthquakes shattered many areas around the world. The economy, job losses, fall in housing starts and the oil spill in the gulf dominated news in late Spring. In late June, our Drexel neighbors told residents not to drink water from the tap due to high levels of atrazine in the water supply. Although the year has had ups and downs world-wide and nationally, in this area there have been lots of positive things happening. Ups. Downs. And just plain newsworthy…how do you remember 2010?

Here are a few highlights from January-May 2010 (read this week's edition of The Adrian Journal for the full story):

January 7: Adrian fourth graders (pictured right) donated money and items to needy children in Mexico. The kids sent 22 shoe boxes of gifts to the Mexican kids. January 21: Adrian HS Senior Tuff Wimberly and Junior, Cara Stark, named Courtwarming King and Queen (pictured far right).

February 4: Adrian elementary students participated in Kits for Kids to aid Haitian children affected by last month’s devastating earthquake. The kids collected enough hygiene supplies to fill 102 kits. February 18: Work on replacement of 17,000 feet of Adrian city water lines began this week.

March 18: Blackhawks end incredible season with a one point loss, 53-52 in the quarter finals match-up. March 25: Temperatures were in the 70’s the previous day, but the first day of Spring saw lion-like weather with up to 12 inches of snow in the area. Several roads were closed due to the drifting white stuff.

April 15: Denny Kooker (South Ward), Danny Ferguson (North Ward) and Larry Ritter, (Mayor) were sworn into office on April 12.
April 29: Adrian Family Care Clinic Building determined to be structurally unsound and will have to be demolished.

May 13: Adrian High School holds the 62th Annual Alumni Meeting, Saturday May 8. May 20: Tuff Wimberly and Tyler Smith named as the 2010 Senior Class Valedictorian and Salutatorian. May 27: Adrian Optimist Club names Mrs. Amy Shipley, first grade, and Mrs. Dorothy Powell, high school Language Arts, as the R-III Teachers of the Year.
