“We have field days every fall,” said Lesley Rigney. “This is a way to get the word out to people about the importance of forestry and how it relates to water quality.”

Lesley, who is the project coordinator with the Marais des Cygne Basin Targeted Watershed Grant Partners, said the organization is hosting a Fall Forestry Day on the Shiloh Properties, just west of Amsterdam, Missouri, in on Thursday, November 12.

Registration must be completed by Tuesday, November 10 and is free to anyone interested in attending the event. The event runs from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on November 12. Topics for the day includes: Riparian forestry (this relates to forestry adjacent to streams and rivers), forest stand improvements, tree planting methods and information on funding water quality and best management practices. The event concludes with a walking tour of the property.

“We are currently concentrating on Bates and Linn Counties,” Lesley said. “The Shiloh Properties have over 1000 acres in all but the field day events take place in an area that includes 300 fenced acres where there are elk, bison and quail that can be seen by visitors.”

Shiloh Properties is located about a mile west of the Junctions of Bates County Routes Y and J. It is about five miles east of Kansas Highway 69 on Kansas 152 and Missouri Highway J. From Amsterdam, go south 1/2 mile on Route Y to Route J, then west for one mile. The site is on the south side of the road, at the white farm house with the red metal roof.

Again, registration for the event must be made before or on Tuesday, November 10. To register or for more information, contact Lesley Rigney at 1-913-219-3566 or Irigney@hwqp.org.
