Blackhawk Pride shines bright during Homecoming week

A rainy, cold week kicked off Adrian Homecoming 2009, but that did not stop the festivities. On Monday, October 12, high school students began building their floats using the theme “Saturday Morning Cartoons.” Also during Homecoming week, the classes competed for the Spirit Stick during dress up days, the bonfire, and the school pep rally.
On Friday, the day started off overcast and chilly, but by mid-morning the sun crept out from behind the clouds in preparation for the Homecoming parade. The Lions Club served hot dogs and drinks, and Ritchie Davis and Adrian Bank handed out tasty kettle corn for anxious spectators.
Leading this year’s parade was Adrian Police Chief Rick DeBruin (pictured). Adrian’s heroes traveled down Main Street with their lights flashing and horns sounding. Under the direction of Allison Oates, the marching band and flag corp provided entertainment, and the cheerleaders showed their Blackhawk Pride. Junior high and high school athletes joined in the celebration, along with various R-III organizations and the elementary students (third graders are pictured). And last, but certainly not least, the class floats paraded down Main Street along with the Queen and King candidates.
At game time, the Adrian Blackhawks took on the Drexel Bobcats. In another district shutout, the Blackhawks crushed the Bobcats, 47-0. At halftime, the senior class won the float competition (pictured), and the sophomores were awarded the Spirit Stick (pictured). Seniors Stephanie Newsome and Ben Davis were crowned the 2009 AHS Homecoming Queen and King. The Royal Court included: Scott Kagarice and Shelby Shannon, freshmen; Brooke Hill and Steven Underwood, sophomores; and Emily Hughes and Shaylon Moreland, juniors.
Following the game, a homecoming dance was held in the high school commons.
