Adrian students receive academic recognition

By MICHELE BURRIS
As reported in last week’s Adrian Journal, Adrian High School finished 8th out of 531 high schools in the State of Missouri for their test scores on the MAP test assessments and End of Course Exams. The tests were taken last spring. Adrian students in grades 3-12 excelled in Communication Arts, Mathematics, Science and Government. Students who achieved Proficient scores (grade level) or Advanced scores (above grade level) were recognized at school assemblies on Monday, August 29.
Adrian R-III continues to provide a high level of education, thereby preparing the students for the next phase in life, whether it’s advancing to middle school or high school, or attending a college/university or entering the work force. Results from the MAP test scores and End-of-Course Exams are what Adrian Middle School and High School use to diagnosis any issues with curriculum and/or instruction at the end of each school year. Additional State funding is not received for these scores.
In 2004, 26.1% of the 6 -12 grade students were at or above grade level in Communication Arts and 11.6% of them were at or above grade level in Mathematics. In a building of 400 students that means that roughly three out of four students were not at grade level. Currently, in 2011, 73% of students in grades 6-12 are at or above grade level as measured by the MAP test and End-of-Course Exams in Communication Arts and Mathematics.
Elementary students in grades 3-5 also took MAP tests last spring. Elementary Principal Brian Borgmeyer said, “We are very proud of our students achievement last school year. The teachers and staff work very hard every year to have the students learn and grow their achievement level. We will continue to work with the students as they can grow in their academics. We will also continue to recognize the students for their hard work.”
