For the first time at Adrian High School, Robotics is a class offered to students. Teacher Jim Hogan has embraced this opportunity and led a team of four students to become champions of the “Kansas City Black Family Technology Robotics Tournament” held last weekend. Adrian’s robotics team competed against 15 teams from Omaha, Oklahoma City, Council Bluffs and other cities/towns.

To participate in the tournament, Juniors Christa Hill and John Cameron and Seniors Ambyr Goergen and Liz Wood made their own robots. They sought advice from Mr. Hogan and from each other while constructing them. “It was amazing to watch the four students work together,” Mr. Hogan said.

Students were first judged individually. Based on their individual scores, teams were formed. In the qualification round, John Cameron placed 4th overall and Ambyr Goergen placed 6th overall. As a team, John and Amybr achieved fifth place overall. In addition to claiming first place, the Adrian Robotics Team received the prestigious “Judges Award” for displaying the most overall robotics knowledge. The team is now qualified to advance to Nationals in Omaha, NE on March 10-12, 2011. Adrian High School Principal Chris Shanks added, “I am proud of the accomplishments of the first year team and sponsor. I am looking forward to the outcome of the national competition in Omaha.”
