Adrian Elementary students make a difference

At Adrian R-III, students of all ages receive a well-rounded education that has an impact on their lives now, and for the rest of their lives. With the recent disaster in Japan, there is much to learn about in the classroom. In addition, the Elementary School has stepped up to the plate to provide the students with a way to help those affected by the tragedy.
Ashlee Burris, a fifth grader in Mrs. Treva Smith’s class, was inspired to help the people of Japan based on what she learned at school last year. Ms. Kelsi Kershner, 4th grade teacher, presented her students with an opportunity to help children in Mexico last year, and Elementary Principal Brian Borgmeyer organized a relief effort called “Kits for Kids.” Ashlee talked to Mr. Borgmeyer and together they orchestrated a campaign drive for the victims of the disaster in Japan. With relief funds totally $12.79 from Adrian Elementary students, the Red Cross will purchase items needed in Japan. Ashlee said, “People are ready for a difference. I am one of those people. I want to help the survivors of Japan to give them what they need.” Mr. Borgmeyer said, “I am proud of our students for wanting to help other people in times of need,” Borgmeyer said. “We are here for them both academically and socially. This effort goes to show that the students are learning not only from lessons we teach them by but examples also.”
Adrian R-III staff, faculty and administration have touched children’s lives in ways beyond what is learned from a book. Their commitment to Adrian’s youth makes an impact that will last a lifetime.
