Academic excellence in Adrian

Last spring, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education made a major change in testing the performance of high school students through specific end-of-course exams. These tests counted against the students’ final grades.
The Kansas City Star compiled a list of the Top 10 end-of-course exam scores of area high schools as far south as Archie (Cass County) for students scoring proficient or above. When Adrian R-III administrators evaluated the students’ scores compared to this list, the results were exceptional. Here is a preview of what the Top 5 would look like, including Adrian R-III:
*Algebra I
1. Blue Springs Freshman Center, 82.4%
2. Adrian High School, 80.7%
3. North Platte High, 77.8%
4. Lee’s Summit West High, 75.0%
5. Park Hill South High, 74.6%
*English II
1. Kansas City Lincoln College Prep, 98.5%
2. Kearney Junior High, 92.5%
3. Adrian High School, 90.9%
4. Lee’s Summit West High, 88.6%
5. Park Hill High School, 87.8%
At a special AHS awards assembly on Monday, August 24, AHS Principal Chris Shanks presented high school students with certificates of achievement for proficient and advanced end-of-course scores. In addition, junior high students were awarded certificates for proficient and advanced MAP test scores. “I was extremely pleased with the overall state test results,” Shanks said. “The end-of-course results were outstanding and we had increases in 6th-8th grade communication arts. We also made gains in 6th-8th grade math. 6th, 7th and 8th grade math will be a focal point for us in the 2009-2010 school year. Congratulations to all of the students, teachers and staff for a job well
done!”
