The Adrian Lady Blackhawks participated in the 81st annual Archie Tournament last week. They opened the tournament on Monday, January 24 against the Ballard Lady Bulldogs and came away with a 65 to 36 win. Coach Dingman said, “This was a good team effort. Best all around game we have played this year. We shot the ball well as a team. 7 for 9 from the 3 point line is always a good thing against a zone. Good way to start the Archie Tournament.”

In second round action Adrian took on the Drexel Lady Bobcats. The Lady Blackhawks easily won the contest 43 to 16. The win moves them to the championship game Saturday night at 6:00 against the Archie Lady Whirlwinds. “We played great defense from start to finish” commented Coach Dingman. “Slow second half but our first half was good enough to be ahead so that it didn’t affect the outcome. Girls played well together. Now we get a chance to play Archie in the championship.”

In the championship game the Adrian Lady Blackhawks, 8-2, took on the Archie Lady Whirlwinds, 11-2. It was a tough go the entire game as it went into two overtimes before Archie won the contest 45 to 50. Coach Dingman commented, “This was a tough and physical game from tip to final buzzer. We just could not keep the lead. Archie battled and battled and tied it up in the last minute or so of the game. First overtime was determined by two made shots then in the second Archie attacked the basket and we could do nothing but foul and they made their foul shots in the end to win it. Girls played great this week. Congratulations to Courtney Miller and Brenna Tallman who made all tournament team.”

The Adrian boys opened the tournament last Tuesday against the Lone Jack Mules Tuesday, January 25 and were defeated 48 to 62. In the second round of the tournament Adrian went up against the Midway Vikings on Wednesday night and came away with a 50 to 39 victory. Coach Basore commented, “The kids did a great job defending and rebounding the basketball.”

In the consolation game the Blackhawks played the Butler Bears. They moved their overall record to 7-5 as they defeated the Bears 62 to 42. Coach Basore said, “We did a great job taking care of the ball and getting it to the post.”
