Adrian’s tradition of week 2 wake-up calls continued this past Friday as the Blackhawks traveled to Archie in the opening game of WEMO conference action. Adrian would end up victorious with a 21-13 win over the Whirlwinds. The final outcome is far better than the punch in the mouth administered by the Whirlwinds in the first half. The Whirlwinds would convert one of two extra points and lead 13-0 at halftime.

The Adrian Blackhawks to come out fired up for the second half of play. Adrian kicked off to the Whirlwinds after the break and quickly shut them down. Micheal Guinn would tie the game up for the visiting squad on a 58 yard touchdown run two minutes later. Ivan Wendleton’s kick would split the uprights, tying the game at 13.

The deciding factor in the game was Adrian’s conditioning and expectation to win in overtime. Luke Hough would score the eventual game winning touchdown on a very tough, motivated run on the Blackhawk’s first possession of overtime. He would follow that with a gritty two point conversion that would end up the final points of the 21-13 score. The Adrian Blackhawks defense would knuckle up and shut the Whirlwinds down on four plays, thus ending the game.

The tradition of second game wake up calls has usually resulted in a loss for the Blackhawks, so this one bad half of play, yet still winning, is a favorable outcome in comparison. To avoid a repeat performance this week the Blackhawks will have to focus on fundamentals before traveling to Drexel to take on the Bobcats. The team now knows it takes more than just showing up to ensure a victory.

Coach Bruto’s only comment on the game was, “Too many mistakes”.

Right: Micheal Guinn hauls in a pass in front of Archie’s Ethan Romi during action Friday night.

Far right: Drew Riley takes down the Whirlwinds receiver, Colter Schacher, causing the incomplete pass.
