Blackhawks open season with WEMO Conference Tournament - Boys take Second

The Adrian Blackhawks varsity basketball squads kicked off the new season with some new faces in the starting lineups. The season traditionally begins with the WEMO Conference Tournament. The boys hit the ground running by logging lopsided victories in the opening rounds before placing second to the Drexel Bobcats. The girls played for the consolation bracket but fell to Osceola in that contest.
The Adrian boys began the tournament against Appleton City. They had little trouble against the Bulldogs as they scored a 54 to 19 victory. Coach Basore commented, “The guys did a really good job of guarding and getting the ball inside.
In second round action Adrian went up against the Rich Hill Tigers and defeated them 60 to 44. “The boys did a great job of being patient with the ball and got good looks inside” stated Coach Basore.
In the championship game No. 2 Adrian faced the No. 1 seed Drexel Bobcats. In the final quarter Adrian outscored Drexel 15 to 10 but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit as they fell 47 to 57 to take 2nd place. Coach Basore said, “I thought the boys played hard, we just didn’t get shots to fall and also settled for bad one at times.”
The Lady Blackhawks began the tournament on Tuesday against the Midway Lady Vikings. They were defeated 43 to 30 to send them into the consolation side of the bracket. Coach Basore said, “I thought our nerves got the better of us. Once we settle down and gain confidence we will be fine. Game experience is what we need.”
In the second round of play the Lady Blackhawks had little trouble with the Miami Lady Eagles as they defeated them 71 to 12. Coach Basore commented, “This was a good game for us to gain some confidence.”
On Friday Adrian played for consolation as they went up against the Osceola Lady Indians. A dismal first half kept them from a victory as they fell 38 to 44. “We got into foul trouble early” stated Coach Basore, “but the girls fought back during the second half. The team that showed up in the second half is the team we want to be for a full game.”
