The Adrian Blackhawks hosted the Butler Bears last Thursday in a much anticipated match-up of two rivals in the final game of district action. Each team entered with a district record of 2-0. Although Adrian had dominated the Bears in recent years, this game ended in Butler’s favor by a score of 13-0.

As time expired in the first half the Blackhawks made the first mistake as a busted play took Butler 70 yards on a catch and run to paydirt. But, a holding penalty on Butler negated the score and both teams headed to the break scoreless.

The second half was more of the same but the Bears managed to sustain a couple of drives that ended in touchdowns. Adrian’s offense was never able to get anything started and was held scoreless for the first time in many years.

Despite the first losing record in the regular season in 35+ years, the Blackhawks had already secured a spot in the post season prior to this game. With the loss Adrian won the right to travel to Higginsville to take on the #4 ranked team in Class 2 football. If the Blackhawks show enough pride and spirit in route to an upset they can erase the bitter taste of defeat that the season has forced upon them. With a loss they can put the season behind them and focus on next year.

Right: Adrian’s Austin Williams steps in front of Butler’s intended receiver, Brett Miller, for the interception during action last Thursday night.

Far right: Rian Lewis, 15, and Joe Collins, 40, in pursuit of Butler’s Tanner McGuire.
