CONFERENCE CHAMPS!! DISTRICT CHAMPS!!
By Mike Burris

Adrian traveled to Appleton City to take on the Bulldogs in an attempt to lock up the district and to secure the conference title last Thursday. Rain battered the area the whole day leading up to the game and was intermittent during the contest. A muddy, wet field tends to make good teams look bad while making lesser teams look good. That was not the case in this matchup as Adrian walked away conference and district champs following a 24-0 score. The whole contest was one sided in Adrian’s favor. It was very encouraging to see the team play so well on a field that was in absolute horrid condition.

The Adrian offense amassed a staggering 289 yards rushing while the defense allowed a paltry 43 yards. Defensively speaking it can’t go without stating just how dominant the squad has been. To go the whole conference without allowing a single point is nothing short of amazing. Outside of a busted play leading to Archie taking an interception to the house, the WEMO conference was completely throttled by the Blackhawks.

“This was a very good win for us” commented Head Coach George Bruto following the game. “It put us in the playoffs and made us conference champs.” “The first playoff game will be here Wednesday vs. Liberal at 7 p.m. They are a very good offensive team” he added. “Their skilled players are very fast so we must keep the ball away from them as much as we can. It should be a great game.”

Adrian heads into the playoffs with a full head of steam to host the Liberal Bulldogs. The Bulldogs come in with a 6-4 record with all four losses coming at the hands of very talented teams that are also in the playoffs. Good teams play well when it’s time to play well regardless of conditions. Adrian proved this week they are a good team ready to take on the challenges of playoff football.

Right: Ivan Wendleton (#54) and Drew Riley (#81) take down Appleton City running back last Thursday.

Middle: Trevor Gregg guns it to wide receiver Skyler Kariker.

Far right: The mud did not stop Adrian’s Erik White as he plows his way through the Appleton City defense in the last game of the regular season last Thursday.
