A week of mini-missions for the 5th and 6th graders attending Vacation Bible School (VBS) at the Adrian Christian Church proved to be an experience they will not soon forget. During the week they picked up trash at the City Park, prepared a meal for a church in Joplin, and sought out canned food to take to Joplin. On Friday, July 15, Matt and MaryEllen Sears and Pastor Paul Burhart led the team of 5th and 6th graders to fulfill their final mission. They left Adrian at 7:30 am and headed to Joplin.

In Joplin they dropped off the meal and donated the canned food to the New Creation Church. From there, the kids had a first-hand look at the damage caused by the tornado. After seeing the damage, the group went to Misti’s Mission. Donated toys for the kids in Joplin filled the entire area under a carport. With the thermometer at 103 degrees, the kids spent three hours sorting and organizing the toys underneath the carport.

After a hot but rewarding day of giving their time to benefit others, MaryEllen Sears said, “I think one thing the kids learned on the trip to Joplin was that serving can be hard work and is often not very glamorous or exciting. But they definitely saw the need and knew that even the little bit that we did helped.”

A group of 5th and 6th graders attending Vacation Bible School at the Adrian Christian Church ended a week of mini-missions by traveling to Joplin to volunteer their services in helping with clean up from the tornado that hit more than a month ago.
