New “Bench Mark” at Altona Community Hall

On September 13, 2009, forty-nine people were present at the Altona Community Hall to celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary of Altona Community Club. Among those present were Carl and Barbara Shubert and Judy Shubert Colburn. Carl and Judy are children of Ruth Shubert, first president of Altona Community club, organized in 1934 originally as an extension club.
Two years later, a lovely bench sits on a concrete patio near the Hall entrance. The bench is engraved with the name of the club, the month and year of organization, and the names of the club’s first officers: Mrs. Ruth Shubert, President; Mrs. Ray Whitehead, Vice President; Mrs. Ina Chitty, Secretary; and Mrs. Lucille McCoy, Game and Song Leader. The concrete work was performed by Leroy Bramell, owner of Bullet Concrete Construction, Urich, Missouri. The bench and engraving is the work of Freeman Monument, Freeman, Missouri.
The Altona Community Hall is located about 6 miles east of Adrian on Highway 18 and a quarter mile north on County Road Z.
