Sarah Doubledee, 14, of Archie, recently gave a part of herself to help someone else. Saturday, August 28, the teen, along with her aunt and mother, visited a beauty shop in Kansas City, Missouri for Sarah’s very first time. There, she also participated in another first, she had her hair cut and donated over 14 inches of hair to the Locks of Love organization. “I wanted to do this, because a little girl had cancer and she didn’t have any hair,” Sarah explained.

Locks of Love is a non-profit organization which provides natural hair wigs/hairpieces for financially disabled children who have long term medical hair loss. The loss can be from cancer treatments or from any medical condition. The children, in the United States and Canada, must be under 21 years of age. There are guidelines for both donors and recipients. For more information about Locks of Love, go online under Locks of Love and check out the several web sites under that topic.

Sarah is an eighth grader, Junior High student at Archie and is one grade above her 13 month younger brother who is known to everywhere as ‘Hoss’. Her favorite subjects in school are math and reading. When she is not busy with school work, Sarah said she likes to cook. She often prepares breakfast for her family. She has been in 4-H for nearly five years and has won lots of ribbons for cooking. Her teacher/mother is also a 4-H leader for cooking, so the skill is a natural for Sarah. She and her family attend the Community of Christ Church in Harrisonville.

The decision to donate hair is a personal one and it was the right one for her. Somewhere, some child will receive a hairpiece made from Sarah’s hair. That child, maybe a little girl, will feel a good sense of self-confidence, self esteem. Much like Sarah has herself. Both girls can feel good about Sarah’s decision to donate a part of herself.
