DAR Good Citizen Recipients Honored

The Harmony Mission Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution honored seniors from seven area high schools on November 9, 2009 at the Ohio Street United Methodist Church in Butler. The students were selected for this award by the faculty and senior class of their school. To be chosen they must have demonstrated in their lives, Dependability, Service, Leadership, and Patriotism. Each student was presented a Certificate recognizing him/her as the Good Citizen representing their school for year 2009. They also each received a Good Citizen lapel pin and wallet card. The students receiving these awards were: Tuff Wimberly of Adrian High School, son of Mr. and Mrs. Shane Wimberly; Andrew Engelhardt of Ballard High School, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Engelhardt; Garrett Gutshall of Miami High School, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gutshall; Haylea Craigmiles of Butler High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Craigmiles; Katie Orear of Hume High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shawn Orear; and Trenda McClaughry of Rich Hill High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bart McClaughry.
As well as being honored as a Good Citizens to represent their schools, the students were also given the option of competing in the Good Citizen Essay Contest, which was to be administered by a faculty member. The candidates who chose to enter the essay contest were Tuff Wimberly, Andrew Engelhardt, Haylea Craigmiles, Katie Orear and Trenda McClaughry. The essays were judged by non DAR affiliated judges. The student receiving first place in the contest was Haylea Craigmiles, Butler High School. Her essay has been sent on to the next level of competition.
Following the program and the presentation of the pins and certificates, refreshments of cookies and punch were served.
