New Arrival- Abram Scott Carr

Abram Scott Carr was born on April 4, 2014 to the proud parents of Andy and Bailey Carr. Abram weighed 8 pounds and 8 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long. Grandparents are Roy and Debbie Umstattd and Robert and Julie Carr, all of Adrian.

Blackhawks track teams participate in Archie Invitational

The Adrian boys and girls track teams participated in the Archie Invitational track meet Tuesday, April 22. The girls finished in 3rd place and the boys in 2nd. Coach Basore said, “We had some injuries this meet and girls were shuffled around and stepped into some relays and did a great job. Overall I was pleased with our efforts. Some girls improved in their individual events and it was nice to be able to substitute in relays and not miss a beat.”

22nd Annual Bob Gunn Memorial Golf Tournament held April 27

After a morning thunderstorm and an afternoon of tornado warnings, the Adrian Lions Club concluded their 22nd Annual Bob Gunn Memorial Golf Tournament Sunday, April 26. Twenty-eight teams golfed in the tournament held at the Butler Country Club.

Adrian FFA members compete at State

Eleven Adrian FFA members qualified to compete at State. The students, with FFA Advisor and Ag Teacher Katie Griffith, left Adrian for the State contest in Columbia on Wednesday, April 24. The students represented Adrian well at the contest.

Keith Nolan Ridgway 1950 - 2014

Keith Nolan Ridgway, age 63 of Amoret, Missouri died Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville. He was born May 27, 1950, in Clinton Missouri to Evelena (Kampe) and James Ridgway.

Harley Hartwig Martens 1931 - 2014

Harley Hartwig Martens 82, of Adrian, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Blue Springs, Missouri. Funeral services were held Monday, April 28, 2014 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian, Missouri. Burial was in Crescent Hill Cemetery in Adrian. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center Place Restoration School in Independence, Missouri or to the Western Missouri Antique Tractor & Machinery Association in Adrian, Missouri.

On 4/16/14, the Bates County Sheriff’s Office made a vehicle stop on 52 Hwy and Rice Road. During the stop the passenger came back with warrants out of Jasper County Missouri. The driver then gave the Deputy consent to search the vehicle for narcotics.

Frontier Village is now the home of an Aspinwall planter

This Aspinwall planter was purchased, new, in the year 1920, by William L Browning, Sr. at the Owl Hardware Store in Bonner Springs, Kansas at the price off $125.00. The Western Missouri Antique Tractor and Machinery Association is thankful to display this planter donated by Mrs. Norma Browning and family and Gene and Margaret Browning and family. It was donated in memory of “Uncle Bill” Browning and restored by George and Dorothy Delameter and friends in 1990. The Brownings would plant 60 to 100 acres per year with this planter in the Kaw River bottoms.

Adrian Youth Cheer Season awards banquet held

Adrian Youth Cheerleading ended the 2013 - 2014 Youth Basketball Season with its annual Awards Banquet held recently at the Adrian Optimists Building. Nearly 50 guests gathered to celebrate and honor the hard work, dedication, and accomplishments of these amazing young ladies. Each cheerleader received a Certificate of Participation and other awards were given.

Blackhawk track teams bring home firsts from Wellington-Napoleon

Both the boys and girls track teams participated in the Wellington-Napoleon track meet Tuesday, April 15. The girls and boys teams both finished in first place. “We saw some better individual competition in some events and it pushed our girls in some areas we hadn’t seen yet” stated Coach Basore. “We also had an injury in our 4x400 relay and Cheyenne Smith stepped up and did a nice job in filling that spot. Overall we took first as a team.”

Lions Easter Egg Hunt

The Adrian Lions Club held their annual Easter Egg Hunt Saturday at the city park. Several hundred kids enjoyed finding over 2,000 candy filled eggs.

Hazelle Ruth LaFarge 1923 - 2014

Hazelle Ruth LaFarge, age 90 of Butler, Missouri died Tuesday, April 15, 2014. The second of five children, she was born July 10, 1923 to Arthur Lee and Edna Elisibeth Main Spratt at home on what is known as the Birks Place in rural Sprague, Missouri southwest of Cozy Corner.

Funeral services were 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 18, 2014 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler with Pastor Ron Dunlap officiating. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri. Contributions to Happy Hill Church of God or Heartland Hospice.

Adrian TSA finishes strong at State

Adrian Technology Student Association (TSA) Advisor Jim Hogan took nine high school and five middle school TSA members to the State TSA Contest in Rolla on March 30 - April 1. It was the largest spring TSA contest with 320 attending.

The Adrian chapter finished strong at the contest. The middle school students made school history when they earned the TSA Chapter Excellence Award, the first time this honor has been achieved at the middle school level. In addition to the awards, junior Matthew Smith was elected as the State TSA President for next year.

Capitol visit planned for Bates and Vernon County citizens

Missouri Representative Randy Pike extends an invitation to the District 126 citizens of Vernon and Bates County to visit the Missouri State Capitol. A special visit day is planned for Tuesday, April 29, which will include touring the Missouri State Capitol, visiting with Representative Pike in the Missouri House of Representatives, touring Jefferson Landing (which is currently featuring an exhibit of the 1904 World’s Fair) and touring the Missouri Governor’s Mansion.

The Adrian Blackhawks track teams participated in the Midway Invitational Tuesday, April 8. The girls placed 2nd and the boys finished 4th. Coach Basore said, “It was a good night again for the girls. Cheyenne Smith ran a personal best in the 800. Brenna Adkins had a good night in her three open events getting 3 new personal bests, and Jessica Willerton ran a personal best in the 100m. We had two relays break the previous meet records. The 4x100 and 4x400 teams ran personal bests and broke the meet records in each relay.

Right: Breckin Nisely bagged his first turkey during Youth Season. His turkey weighed 23 lbs., had a 9 1/2” beard and 1” spurs. Breckin was hunting with his dad Marques and grandpa Mike Horner.

Dorsey Allen Durfee was born September 13, 1925 in Metz, MO, the son of Howard and Isal (Vaught) Durfee. He passed away Friday, April 11, 2014 at Medicalodge of Butler, MO, at the age of 88. Dorsey served time in the Army. He married Joan Ellis on July 4, 1948.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 17, 2014, 2:00 p.m. at the Happy Hill Church of God under the direction of Heuser Funeral Home, Rich Hill. Ron Dunlap officiated. R-3 students participate in MCTM District Math Contest

Qualifying Adrian students from the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades participated in the MCTM District Math Contest held on Saturday, April 5 at the Barstow School in Kansas City. The top five students from each grade level qualified to participate at the state competition that will be held at the UCM Campus in Warrensburg, MO on Saturday, April 26.  Adrian fourth grader Colton Bass qualified by placing fifth among the 46 fourth graders that were in attendance.

Meeting held to discuss Adrian R-3 music program

Approximately 75 concerned students, alumni, parents, community members and school board members met on April 7th to discuss the issues facing the music program at Adrian R-III. In the 2014-2015 academic year, the music department will be reduced to one teacher who will be responsible for providing music education for all 730+ students in the district.

Participates in District Music Contest

On March 29, 2014, eight Adrian R-III music students attended District Solo and Ensemble contest at Grain Valley HS. The percussion ensemble received an outstanding II rating along with two vocal solos (Josh Hawkins and Kalene Kiesel) and piano solo (Kalene Kiesel). Those receiving a rating of III were Sara Geringer (clarinet solo) and Cheyenne Smith (vocal solo). Those receiving an exemplary rating I were Hunter Chamberlain (trumpet solo) and Rachel Mann (snare drum solo). Hunter and Rachel qualify to compete at State Solo contest in Columbia on May 2, 2014.

R-3 students participate in MCTM District Math Contest

Qualifying Adrian students from the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades participated in the MCTM District Math Contest held on Saturday, April 5 at the Barstow School in Kansas City. This year testing procedures were vastly different than in previous years. Each student took four tests instead of two and one of those was a Team Test. Students accumulated points for each test taken, and the top five students from each grade level qualified to participate at the state competition that will be held at the UCM Campus in Warrensburg, MO on Saturday, April 26.

Unofficial Election Results - April 8, 2014

On Tuesday, April 8, 2014, voters exercised their right to vote for City officials and School Board members. In Adrian, the incumbents were all re-elected. Larry Ritter will serve another term as Mayor and Joyce Talley will serve as the South Ward Alderman. David Knuth and Tom Underwood will again serve on the R-III School Board.

Adrian City Park Board discusses baseball fields

The Adrian City Park Board met Thursday, April 3 at 6pm in Wimfield’s. It was stated that the east ball field needs a lot of work. Debris from the old City dump keeps coming to the surface of the playing area. Several local business men and contractors have volunteered to dig out the field and replace the dirt. The Board would be responsible for fuel for the project. Donita made a motion to allow private contractors including Jamie Kidwell to improve the east ball field at a maximum cost of $600 to the Board. Steve seconded and it carried 5 to 0.

Now for the rest of the story. In 1991, Judy Ball, with the help of Gary Ford, the City Manager, asked the City Council for the use of a retired police car to use for a taxi service in Adrian. All approved so it started November 18, 1991. Joanne Buhr has scheduled volunteers for 10 years.

It’s a game of the dueling Secondary Principals in Adrian and Archie! Who can improve test scores the most? Adrian Principal Don Lile says it is his students, and Archie Principal Jeff Kramers says it is his! The school with the highest increase on End-of-Course exams will be a part of something that has never been done before. The winning principal will set-up an “office” for the principal of the opposing school…on the roof! Dressed in the arch rival’s school colors, the principal of the opposing school will spend an entire school day on the roof.

Adrian students, 5th through 8th grades, competed in the Sherwood Math Contest Tuesday, March 18. Teachers attending were Matt Cochran, Erin Huckaby and Jeannie Erwin. Team results were: 5th grade, 1st; 6th grade, 2nd; 7th grade, 2nd; 8th grade, 1st; 5th-8th Teams, 1st.

Adrian boys and girls track teams capture first place at Archie and Adrian meets

The Adrian Blackhawks girls and boys track teams traveled to Archie Monday, March 31. Both teams brought home 1st place finishes.
Girls Coach Basore commented, “We ran well on the track and also had some girls earn more points in the field events. Good team effort to win the meet. We had the opportunity to see the areas that we need to improve on and hopefully we can take care of those issues over the next couple of days so we are ready for our meet at Adrian.”

Thursday, April 3, Adrian hosted 14 teams. Again, both the boys and girls placed 1st.

Davey Lee “Crockett” Thomas, age 83 of Rich Hill, Missouri died Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at his home in Rich Hill. He was born May 8, 1930 to Herman Ralph “Jack” and Alice Opal Culver Thomas in Rich Hill, Missouri.

Competes at Regional Contest

Adrian Freshman Maddie Moore represented Adrian High School at the Optimist Regional Oratorical Contest on Sunday, April 5 at Lakeland School. Twelve contestants competed in this contest. Maddie finished strong in the Regional round of competition after advancing from the Optimist Club level in Adrian and the Zone level in Clinton.

Mike and Sandy Cockrell of Rogers, Arkansas, are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter Sara to Collin Young.

Sara is the granddaughter of Bob and Pauline Cockrell, of Monticello, Arkansas, John and Mary Mahurin, of Star City, Arkansas and the late Joan Mahurin.
Collin is the son of Kim Young of Adrian and David and Mary Young of Clinton. Collin is the grandson of Clyde “Dub” and Bonnie Gutshall of Adrian and Moe and Vonna Young of Clinton.

A Sept. 27, 2014 wedding is planned in Kansas City.

New Arrival - Emmy Jane Ayler

Sara Ayler is excited to announce the arrival of her sister, Emmy Jane Ayler. Emmy was born February 27, 2014 at Research Hospital at 1:49 pm. Emmy weighed 8 lbs. 10 oz. and was 21 1/2” long.

Emmy’s parents are Bob Ayler and Tammy Camerer of Holden. Paternal grandparents are Richard and Dorothy Ayler of Garden City. Maternal grandparents are Don and Rita Camerer of Adrian.

Music Education meeting held

Over 75 people gathered at the Adrian United Methodist Church on Monday, April 7 to participate in a conversation about the importance of music education in schools. Dr. Carla Jo Maltas, a Music Educator at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, spoke to the crowd of students (past and present), parents, teachers, the music boosters and others in the community.  The conversation centered around how the community can best support the music program at Adrian R-3, which will have one music teacher for grades K-12 in the upcoming school year.

Pennies for Patients Campaign

Adrian R-III elementary students and staff and two classes in middle school participated in the Pennies for Patients Campaign for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in February. Our school raised $1,028.41 for this program. Mrs. Debbie Frazier’s class collected the most with $300.00! Her class got a gold pennant and will get to have a pizza party for their efforts. Six Adrian youth wrestlers made their way to St. Louis to compete in the Missouri State Wrestling Championships.They wrestled hard. Of the six, three state placers made it to the podium.  Cole Ritter, who began wrestling at the age of 5, wrestled his way to the final match. He took 2nd place in the 10U, 75# division. In the 14U, 75# division, Carter Vickers wrestled hard to claim a 5th place spot on the podium.  Trevor Thompson, in the 10U 90# division, took 4th place.

2014 Track Season begins for Adrian Blackhawks

The Adrian Blackhawks boys and girls track teams opened the 2014 track season at the University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg for an indoor meet on Tuesday, March 25.

The Adrian Optimist Club is pleased to honor Students of the Month from the Miami, Ballard and Adrian schools. Criteria for this honor center on outstanding academic and civic achievement and school spirit. Staff at each of the schools make the selection, and their decision is based on expansion of these criteria. On 3/18/14, members of the CNET Drug Taskforce and the Bates County Sheriff’s Office converged on a residence in rural Adrian, Missouri. The narcotics officers were following up on a tip in reference to a marijuana grow operation at the residence.

Narcotics officers made contact with one of the owners at the residence. At the residence the officers located two locations within the house used for the grown operation. .

Adrian Chamber of Commerce features Longo Law Firm, LLC as the March Business of the Month

The Adrian Chamber of Commerce has chosen Longo Law Firm, LLC as the featured business for March. The office, located in Suite A, 145 East Main Street in Adrian, is owned by attorney Jovanna Longo. She has been a lawyer since 2007 and has been located in Adrian since September of last year. She also has a meeting office in Kansas City, Missouri to accommodate clients in that area as well.

Author Kelly Milner Halls captivates Adrian R-3 students

Last Wednesday, March 19, author Kelly Milner Halls visited the Adrian R-III Library. Mrs. Halls energetic, interesting presentation kept a captive audience of young kids, older kids and teachers listening carefully to her passion for books. Her books are non-fiction, science based children’s books about ghosts, Big Foot, aliens and more. “The Tales of the Cryptids,” is currently one of the most popular books written by Mrs. Halls.

Last weekend, Adrian youth wrestlers competed at Blue Springs High School to earn the opportunity to compete at the State Championships in St. Louis. Six wrestlers are statebound! Competing next weekend, March 28-30, are: Devon Keyton, William Brown, Cole Ritter, Trevor Thompson, Mason Reid, and Carter Vickers.

Ballard Troop 163 participates in Klondike themed camporee

The newly formed Troop 163 from Ballard, MO enjoyed a weekend of camping at H Roe Bartle Scout Reservation for a Klondike themed camporee March 14th-16th. The boys built their own sleds as well as learning to start a fire, morse code and cooking on an open camp fire using sticks, a pocket knife, and a a fire starter. They also used a giant sling shot as well.

Adrian Poster Contest Winners

Adrian Elementary 4th graders participated in the Bates County Soil and Water Conservation Poster Contest. In art class, Ms. Leslie Byrd worked with the students to design their posters. The top three posters in each class were submitted to the county level for the Bates County Soil and Water Conservation Poster Contest. Laurel Rae Hilborn 1933 - 2014

Laurel Rae Hilborn, age 80 of Butler, Missouri died Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Medicalodge of Butler. He was born July 29, 1933 to Ralph Hubert and Evelyn Fern Summers Hilborn in Wenatchee, Washington.

Rae’s wishes were to be cremated and remembered with fond memories.

Ellen Elaine Cantrell 1956 – 2014

Ellen Elaine Cantrell, 57, Archie, Missouri, died Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Lee’s Summit Medical Center in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.  Funeral services were held Sunday, March 30 at the Archie School Dome in Archie, Missouri, with burial in Crescent Hill Cemetery in Adrian, Missouri.

Thelma Marie Craig, age 86 of Butler, Missouri died Sunday, March 23, 2014 at her home in Butler. She was born February 25, 1928 to Robert Martin and Rosie Irene Bertina McMillin in Harper, Missouri.
