Scouts participate in Klondike Derby


Adrian Boy Scout Troop 238 attended the Lone Bear District 2014 Klondike Derby, held at H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation, March 15-16. Troops are divided into two teams while participating in the Derby. Adrian’s teams were Team USA and Team Dodge. Team USA was the winner of this year’s Klondike Derby.

R-III students participate in Knob Noster Math Contest


Adrian R-III students participated in the Knob Noster Math Contest on Thursday, March 13. Overall Adrian finished in second place. Adrian won the team Jeopardy competition at the end of the meet.

5th Grade participants were: Jackson Bass, Aaron Cochran, Keaton Cook, Case Doody, Anissa Ewing, Bailey Greer, Camden Hragyil, Josh Patnoe, Kellen Preston, Caitlyn Sass, Tony Scaletty, and John Wackerman.

Freddie Leroy Plasmyer 1923 - 2014

Freddie Leroy Plasmyer, age 90 of Butler, MO, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the Medicalodge Healthcare Center in Butler after a long illness. He was a member of the Ohio Street United Methodist Church in Butler.

Graveside memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2014 at Bald Mound Cemetery in Dade County, Missouri with Roger McKee officiating. Contributions to Ohio St. United Methodist Church or Wounded Warriors.

Betty Jean Weir 1928 – 2014

Betty Jean Weir, 85, died Tuesday, March 4, 2014 in Conroe, Texas. Funeral services were held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 13 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, Missouri. Graveside services were held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 14 at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Harrisonville, Missouri, under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.

Stanley Milo “Butch” Fjoser, Jr. 1947 - 2014

Stanley Milo “Butch” Fjoser Jr., age 66 of Peculiar, Missouri died Thursday, March 6, 2014 at his home. He was born September 22, 1947 to Stanley Milo Fjoser Sr. and Marcella Hager Fjoser in Alexandria, Minnesota.

Helen Kling 1916 - 2014

Helen Kling passed away at the age of 98 on March 12, 2014. Bertha Helen Bartlett Kling was born in Butler March 11, 1916, the second daughter of Roy and Daisy (Seelinger) Bartlett.

Graveside services were Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler, Missouri with Pastor Dave Owsley officiating. Contributions to Poplar Heights Living History Farm.

Helen Louise Smith 1926 - 2014

Helen Louise Smith, age 88 of Butler, Missouri died Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. She was born February 22, 1926 to Lonnie and Ermine Zimmer Deerwester in Butler, Missouri.

Graveside services were Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Alzheimer’s Association of Heartland Hospice.

The Adrian community is set to celebrate the storied career of beloved coach George Bruto this Saturday at 4:00pm in the East Gym.  After 37 years featuring an overall record of 430-177 in all sports that he coached, the “Old Ball Coach” is hanging up his whistle. 

Grand River Lane Bridge Project is complete

Man arrested in Adrian



On March 11, the Bates County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a possible burglary in progress on East Main Street in Adrian Missouri. An off duty Adrian Officer responded along with the Bates County Deputies. With information from a witness the Officers were sure there was still someone in the residence.

Adrian Chamber of Commerce Business Expo deemed a success


More than 40 vendors filled the Adrian Optimist Building on Saturday, March 8, 2014 for the Adrian Chamber of Commerce Business Expo. For the 4th year, the Expo was well-attended. Adrian residents, both longtime and new, along with people from other towns, had the opportunity to talk with local businesses and civic groups. Raffle prizes provided by many vendors were awarded throughout the event.

Blackhawks receive All Conference honors

Participates in All Conference Band


On Saturday (March 8, 2014), 20 Adrian High School and Middle School band students attended All-Conference Band at Appleton City. The clinician was Derek Cross, music director at Sherwood. The students rehearsed all day with band students from seven other schools ending with a concert performance.Conference Middle School percussionists also performed a piece of their own. This large group experience allows students from small schools to participate in a group unlike they are used to.

Bingo Winner


Marilyn Aitken won $4500 on Blackout during Adrian Optimist Bingo Monday night, March 10. The club hosts Bingo every Monday night.

Project Prom t-shirt contest


Every year Adrian Pro-ject Prom sponsors a t-shirt contest. This year’s winner was Derek Greer. His winning t-shirt (at right) was: “A Neon Night” Project Prom 2013-2014. Other winners were: Kaitlyn Miller, 2nd, and Bailey Hill, 3rd. Monetary prizes were given to the winners. Patricia “Patty” Ann Powell 1959 - 2014

Patricia “Patty” Ann Powell was born on May 6, 1959 to Hazel Lee Henry and Marion Knox Heard. She passed away on February 28, 2014. Patricia was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

Jerry S. Highfill 1951 – 2014

Jerry Steven Highfill, 62, Adrian, Missouri, departed this life on March 5, 2014 at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 10 at the Adrian Christian Church, Adrian, Missouri, with burial in Scott Cemetery, Amsterdam, Missouri.  

Jerry loved children and animals. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Midwest Animal ResQ.

Anna Lou Kaiser Alkire 1928 - 2014

Anna Lou Kaiser Alkire, age 85 of Butler, Missouri died Saturday, March 1, 2014 at her home in Butler. She was born March 6, 1928 to Henry John and Florence Mae McNamara Kaiser in Kansas City, Missouri.

Funeral services were Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Father John Bolderson officiating. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri. Contributions to Mother’s Refuge or Catholic Charities.

Lady Blackhawks take 2nd in Districts


The Adrian Lady Blackhawks opened District play Monday, February 24 at Osceola. They went up against the Lady Tigers from Rich Hill and came away with a 49 to 47 victory. Coach Basore commented, “The girls got too comfortable and let the game get too close.”

Engaged To Wed . . .Wiskur - Woodward


April Clark of Drexel, MO and Russell Wiskur, Adrian, MO, announce the engagement of their daughter, Kendra LeighAnne Wiskur to Adam Wayne Woodward, son of Tim and Abby Woodward, of Adrian.

A September wedding is planned.

Veterans honored at Adrian Manor


VFW made the presentations Wednesday, February 19. Members of Adrian VFW Post 1935 presented certificates of appreciation to three veterans who reside at Adrian Manor Nursing Home. The three received a salute from the group of VFW members in attendance.

Donates Quilt


Betty Pruden, a long time Adrian resident, has donated her beautiful blue ribbon quilt to the Adrian Community Library. Betty, an avid reader, has always been a supporter of the library. With the purchase of the library building she knew her quilt could be her contribution toward reducing the mortgage and helping to give the Adrian Community Library a permanent home. Kay DePriest also played an important role in the making of this exquisite quilt. Kay used her talent of machine quilting to bring out the quilt’s colorful details and design.

Charles Mathis 1937 - 2014

Charles Mathis, age 77 of Butler, Missouri died Thursday, February 27, 2014 at his home in Butler. He was born February 7, 1937 to Clarence and Januita Ritchie Mathis in Commerce, Oklahoma.

Funeral services were Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Marla Kash officiating. Burial at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Norwich, Kansas. Contributions to Living Hope Native Ministries.

Evelyn Bernice Warren 1942 - 2014

Evelyn Bernice Warren, age 72 of Adrian, Missouri died Thursday, February 27, 2014 at her home in Adrian. She was born January 25, 1942 to Wilburn Edward and Ollie Oliver Kendrick in Cass County, Missouri.

Visitation was held 5-7 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2014 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, contributions to American Diabetes Association or Serenity Hospice.

Joshua Eugene Anderson 1985 - 2014


Joshua Eugene Anderson, 29, of Adrian, MO was born January 10,1985 in Clinton, MO to Gerald and Ramona (Leavell) Anderson. He departed this life Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, MO the result of a tragic workplace accident.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Adrian Optimist Building in Adrian, Missouri. Cremation with inurnment in the Crescent Hill Cemetery near Adrian. A memorial fund for the Anderson family has been established at the Adrian Bank, Adrian, Missouri.

Vivian Lucille Brewer 1925 - 2014


Vivian Lucille (Mayfield) Brewer, 88, passed away February 26, 2014 at Delaware Highlands Assisted Living in Kansas City, Kansas. She was born September 6, 1925, the daughter of Floyd William and Letha May (Wilmot) Mayfield.

Graveside memorial services were held 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2014 in Sharon Cemetery near Drexel, Missouri. Contributions are suggested to the Drexel United Methodist Church.

Steven Elliot Mooney 1945 to 2014

Steven Elliot Mooney passed away February 24, 2014 at the age of 68 at his home in Amsterdam, Missouri. Steve was born March 11, 1945 to Howard Eugene and Emily Vera Valentine Mooney in Kansas City, Missouri.

Funeral services were Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Pastor Ron Dunlap officiating. Cremation following services. Contributions to Miami High School FFA.

Students of the Month receive recognition from the Optimists


The Adrian Optimist Club is pleased to honor Students of the Month from the Miami, Ballard and Adrian schools. Criteria for this honor center on outstanding academic and civic achievement and school spirit. Staff at each of the schools make the selection, and their decision is based on expansion of these criteria. Each student is honored with a certificate of recognition from the Adrian Optimist Club and $20.00 in Adrian Chamber of Commerce “Chamber Bucks”.

Elmer receives Lone Bear District Award of Merit


At the February 11, 2014 Lone Bear District Volunteer Recognition dinner in Clinton, MO, Melinda Elmer received the Lone Bear District Award of Merit, the highest award presented by the district for outstanding service to youth. Melinda serves as treasurer for Adrian Cub Scout Pack 238; fund-raising coordinator for Adrian Boy Scout Troop 238; and Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner for the Lone Bear District.

Adrian Chamber of Commerce features dentist Dr. James Binkley, DDS as the February Business of the Month


The Adrian Chamber of Commerce has selected Dr. James Binkley, DDS as the business for February. Dr. Binkley’s dental office is located at 402 South Main Street in Archie. Dr. Binkley has been a dentist since 1990 and began working immediately, at that time, with Dr. Grizzell. Dr. Grizzell passed away in the early Spring of 1998 and by November, Dr. Binkley became the owner of the clinic.

Lady Blackhawks share WEMO Conference Championship


The Lady Blackhawks moved their conference record to 5-0 as they defeated the Drexel Lady Bobcats 57 to 51 on Tuesday, February 18. Coach Basore commented, “It was a good road win for us. The girls deserved this win.”

On Thursday, February 20, the conference championship was on the line as the Lady Blackhawks hosted the Archie Lady Whirlwinds. Adrian struggled offensively and fell 48 to 34. On a positive note, Senior Kamiron Luptak added her name to the 1,000 point list.

Blackhawks fall to Drexel and Rich Hill; Defeat Archie


The Adrian Blackhawks traveled to Drexel on Tuesday, February 18 for conference play. Adrian was defeated 76 to 41. Coach Basore said, “We didn’t get shots to fall early and it affected our energy.”

Thursday night Adrian hosted the Archie Whirlwinds. In an exciting game, the Blackhawks came out on top, 57 to 55. The Blackhawks had four in double digit scoring. “The boys really played hard and rebounded well to get a big win” stated Coach Basore.

On Friday night, February 21 the Blackhawks were on the road as they traveled to Rich Hill for the last regular season game.

Kamiron Luptak scores 1,000


In 4th grade, Adrian High School senior Kamiron Luptak began what would become a journey that would lead her to a collegiate scholarship. From little league teams (4th-6th grades) to the Adrian Junior and Senior High teams to a traveling team, Kamiron has practiced and played the game of basketball whenever she could. Determination and hard work paid off last Thursday, February 20, when Kamiron scored her 1,000th point in front of her hometown crowd. The crowd erupted as Kamiron was congratulated by her teammates, coaches and family.

Thelma Charlene Wix Conrad, age 76 of Oak Grove, Missouri died Tuesday, February 18, 2014 in Oak Grove. She was born August 5, 1937 to Thomas Hardin and Mary Arlene Brooks Wix in Butler, Missouri.

Carol Imogene Mitchell, age 78 of Butler, Missouri died Saturday, February 15, 2014 at her home in Butler. She was born October 20, 1925 to Albert Freeman and Roberta Imogene Gabriel Smith in Preston, Kansas.

Police pursuit ends in Amsterdam


On Saturday, February 14th, the Bates County Sheriff’s Office received a request for assistance from the Linn County Kansas Dispatch. Dispatch advised that they had a LaCygne Police Officer in pursuit of a vehicle that was about to enter into Bates County. As the pursuit entered the county on J Highway, Bates County Deputies joined the pursuit. The pursuit only lasted a few minutes in Bates County before the car stopped in a driveway on High Street in Amsterdam.

Thirsty? If you lived in “the good ole days”, you may have gone outside to pump and crank the handle to get a drink of water. Pictured, a GEM cistern pump is located in the museum at the Frontier Village. Any information about who donated this pump to the museum would be appreciated.

Lady Blackhawks take 2nd in Midway Tournament


On Thursday night of the Midway tournament the Adrian Lady Blackhawks faced the Lady Knights of KC Lutheran and came out on top 55 to 47. The win put the Lady Blackhawks into the championship game on Saturday night. Coach Basore said, “It was a frustrating game for us, but the girls pulled through in the end.”

On Saturday night the Adrian Lady Blackhawks went up against the Archie Lady Whirlwinds for the second time for a championship title in tournament play. Again, Adrian fell short in a very low scoring game, 34 - 26.

Blackhawks fall short in consolation game of Midway Tournament


The Adrian Blackhawks opened the Midway Tournament on Tuesday, February 11 against the KC Lutheran Knights. Adrian was defeated in a close contest, 56 to 61. Coach Basore stated, “We played a really good game but we weren’t able to close it out.”

In the second round of tournament action on Wednesday night, Adrian defeated the Archie Whirlwinds 51 to 43. “We finally put four quarters together and got a good team win” said Coach Basore. “I was very proud of our boys and how hard they played.”

Blackhawk wrestlers place 2nd at Warsaw


On January 18, 2014 the Adrian Blackhawks traveled to Warsaw, home of the Wildcats, to compete in their annual invitational tournament. The Blackhawks came out in second place as a team, with four individuals bringing back medals - Dakota Jones, Michael Lopez, Austin Williams and Christian Graham.

Clifford James Lamkins 1933 - 2014

Clifford James Lamkins, age 80 of Addison, Illinois, formerly of Foster, Missouri died Thursday, February 6, 2014 at Glen Oaks Hospital in Glendale Heights, Illinois. He was born July 18, 1933 to William and Minnie Little Lamkins in Newport, Arkansas.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Linda Gayle Knoll 1955 – 2014

Linda Gayle (Best) Knoll, 59, Adrian, Missouri, died Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at her home surrounded by her family. She died from complications due to breast cancer. Funeral services were held Friday, February 14, 2014 at the Belton Assembly of God in Belton, Missouri. Burial was in Scott Cemetery in Amsterdam, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made to the Assembly of God, Heartland Hospice or Gideon International.

Mary Beatrice Dickerson 1934 - 2014

Mary Beatrice Dickerson, age 79 of Butler, Missouri, died Monday, February 10, 2014 at St. Joseph Health Center in Kansas City, Missouri. She was born April 24, 1934 to Vance McKinley and Alizebeth Wilhelmina McCabe Talley in Salina, Kansas.

Funeral services were Thursday, February 13, 2014 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler with Pastor Eldon Allen officiating. Burial in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, Missouri. Contributions to St. Luke’s Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery.
