Harvesting a crop being the seasonal end point of farming, seed must be properly placed as a beginning. The Western Missouri Antique Tractor and Machinery Association (WMAT&MA) has several planters as well as harvesting machinery. For the most part these planters planted the seed in hills. A standard of the day was the “check row”. By it the rows were intended to be planted straight, and the hills were also straight at a right angle to the planting direction. Thus cultivating could be done two directions.

On January 23, the Bates County Sheriff’s Office and CNET Drug Task Force executed a narcotics search warrant at 411 North Washington Street in Rockville. A total of three people were taken into custody. Several items of drug paraphernalia and narcotics were also seized from the residence or on their persons. This is the second time the Sheriff’s Office and CNET Drug Task Force has executed a search warrant on this residence.

On September 13, 2013 the Bates County Sheriff’s Office took a theft report of farm equipment and scrap metal. The theft occurred on N Highway south of East 52 Highway. The victim reported that he had caught several subjects come and go on a piece of property that he had stuff stored on. The victim had installed several game cameras and caught subjects on video. Total of the thefts exceeds $2,000.00
Adrian Fire Chief Gary Disney has issued a burn ban for the City of Adrian until further notice. “There is to be no burning within the city limits,” Chief Dizney said, adding that this will be enforced by City officials. “We also encourage those in rural areas to not do any burning as well, or if you do, use extreme caution due to the drought conditions.” Be alert to changes in the weather during this drought, such as the heavy winds that swept through on Sunday, plaguing many farmers and fire departments with out-of-control grass fires.
Adrian Chamber of Commerce features Kershner Heating and Cooling as the January Business of the Month
The Adrian Chamber of Commerce has chosen Kershner Heating and Cooling as the featured business for January. The business, located at 103 North Lyons Street in Butler, is owned by Rick Kershner. Rick started the business 27 years ago. His wife, Anita and their daughter, Amber, are also involved in the business. They have one part-time and six full-time employees as well as thousands of customers.
The Adrian Blackhawks traveled to Lakeland Tuesday, January 21 for non conference action. The Lady Blackhawks moved their overall record to 10-3 as they defeated the Lady Vikings 64 to 39. The boys were defeated 91 to 42.
In the boy’s contest, Lakeland was just too much for the much smaller Blackhawks. The Vikings put up 32 points to Adrian’s 8 in the first quarter and added 26 in the second as they took a 58 to 21 halftime lead. The second half proved no better for the Blackhawks as they were outscored 33 to 21.
On January 11, 2014 the Adrian Blackhawks wrestling team enjoyed a short trip for a change, traveling to Butler to take part in their annual invitational tournament. Participating teams included the Adrian Blackhawks, Butler Bears, Diamond Wildcats, ElDorado Springs Bulldogs, Hogan Prep Rams, Holden Eagles, Springfield Glendale Falcons, Knob Noster Panthers, Lathrop Mules, Principia Panthers, Rogers Mountaineers, Trenton Bulldogs and Warsaw Wildcats. The Blackhawks took home 5th place as a team.
World War II veteran Don Curnutte, Adrian, served in the United States Army. In recognition of his service he was presented a certificate of appreciation from Adrian VFW Post 1935 Commander Tim Hummel at Adrian Manor Nursing Home on January 22. Following the presentation, Curnutte received a salute from the group of VFW members in attendance.
Ronda Jean Jolliffe-Grant passed away January 25, 2014 at the age of 44 in Butler, Missouri. Ronda was born November 29, 1969 to Ronald and Jaima Kelley Jolliffe in Butler.

Robert Douglas Huff passed away on January 24th 2014, at 12:30 pm at KU Medical Center. Bobby was born July 25th 1963, and graduated Adrian High School in 1981.

Gordon Howard Evelsizer was born on June 3, 1919 in Bagley, Iowa to William Evelsizer and Lillie Schafer Evelsizer. He passed from this life on Friday, December 20, 2013 in Stillwater, Oklahoma having reached the age of 94 years, 6 months, and 17 days.

World War II veteran Robert Leroy Harper served in the United States Army. Harper comes from Osceola, MO but will be residing with his daughter here in Adrian.
During the weekend of January 3 and 4, 2014, Hunter Chamberlain and Sara Geringer (pictured) attended the High School All-District Band Clinic at the University of Central Missouri (UCM) in Warrensburg. Both students went through a rigorous audition in November in order to be selected to be a part of the All-District Honorable Mention Band. They were selected out of many of the best high school band students from over 20 schools of different size enrollments within the district.
Six Adrian Jr. High band members were selected to participate in the Jr. High All-District band clinic and concert on Saturday, January 11, 2014. These students were selected along with over 250 other of the best band students within the district.
Five of the students were in the 7th grade Honor Band under the direction of Keely Abeln from the Francis Howell School District in St. Charles, MO. Under the direction of Ann Goodwin Clark, recent Director at Park Hill High School, 8th grader Andrew Steward participated in the 8th Grade Honor Band.
On December 19, the Blackhawks traveled to Hale Arena in Kansas City to participate in the USA Wrestling Duals. Their opponents for the first meet were the Carrollton Trojans. The Blackhawks fell to the Trojans 45-33.
The second match of the night pitted the Blackhawks against the Lawson Cardinals. The Blackhawks also fell to the Cardinals 46-28.

The Adrian Blackhawks hosted the Butler Bears Tuesday, January 14 in non-conference action. The Lady Blackhawks moved their overall record to 9-3 with a 69 to 39 victory. Coach Basore had this to say about the game, “It was a fun atmosphere and the girls came ready to play.”
In the boys game Adrian struggled offensively and were defeated by the much larger Bears, 66 to 30. “We really struggled with their size and couldn’t get good looks at the rim” commented Coach Basore.
Six Adrian youth wrestlers participated in the Carthage Youth Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, January 18. Those wrestlers include: Cole Ritter, Trevor Thompson, Grady Debrick, Jence Griffith, Dallas Shaefer and Micheal McCoy. All of the wrestlers, in different weight classes, made their way to the bubble matches, an impressive feat considering 700 kids participated in the tournament. Cole and Grady brought home the Championship title in their weight classes. This was the first big tournament for Grady.
Adrian Cub Scouts of Pack 238 burned up the track with 25 smoking fast cars at their annual Pinewood Derby on Sunday, January 19th at the Adrian Optimist Building. The overall winners of the Derby are pictured, left to right: 3rd place, Zach Thomas, son of Jim and Debi Thomas; 2nd place, Jayden Wicklin, son of Jake and Colina Wicklin and 1st place, Barak Cunningham, son of Matt and Julie Cunningham.

The Adrian Blackhawks opened the second half of their season by traveling to Liberal for non conference action. They were defeated 65 to 35. Coach Basore stated, “We struggled rebounding and keeping them out of the lane.”
In another non conference game, Adrian traveled to Ballard and defeated the Bulldogs 66 to 46. “We had four guys score in double figures” stated Coach Basore. “We did a great job moving the ball and running the floor.”
The Lady Blackhawks opened their 2014 portion of the basketball season at Liberal on Friday, January 3. They came away with a 2 point victory, 49 to 47 to move their overall record to 6-2. Coach Basore commented, “We had some big shots made down the stretch. Good team effort to finish with a win.”
On Wednesday, January 8 Adrian traveled to Ballard and posted a 52 to 17 win. “It was good to work on things in a game setting” said Coach Basore.
Courtwarming for the Adrian Blackhawks was Friday, January 10, 2014. Fans filled the gym to watch the JV and Varsity basketball teams take on the Midway Vikings, and to see who would be this year's Courtwarming King and Queen. On the 9th day of January, 2014, deputies attempted to stop a 4-door white truck traveling south on Fulton Street, Butler, Missouri at a high rate of speed. Deputies stated that the subject was going through yards, running over trash cans, and hit two trees causing extensive damage to his vehicle. The subject was finally apprehended.
On 1/7/14 the Bates County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a traffic accident on A Highway and V Highway in Hume, MO. The accident occurred when an on-duty Bates County Deputy was traveling eastbound out of Hume and a vehicle traveling westbound into Hume collided. The driver traveling westbound lost control on the ice as the vehicle entered in the curve. The vehicle struck the Bates County Deputy in the driver side of his patrol vehicle, causing him to leave the roadway and come to rest against a sign. Neither driver was hurt during the accident.
On Saturday, January 11, 2014, the Adrian Chamber of Commerce hosted the 13th Annual Spring Banquet.
Chamber Member Don Arndt gave a review of the Chamber’s efforts and activities in 2013. In 2013, the Chamber is almost 90 members strong. President Josh Nieder presented a special award to Adrian Chamber Member Curtis Reynolds (pictured right). Reynolds was named as the 2013 Adrian Chamber of Comemrce Person of the Year.
Daniel Alan Henderson, 36, passed away January 2, 2014 in Wichita, Kansas. He was born on July 6, 1977 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Joan Kinnard (Phillips) Maloney, 83, Archie, Missouri, died Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville, Missouri. A severe winter storm came barreling through Adrian and surrounding areas, beginning with snowfall late Saturday night/early Sunday morning. The temperature made a steady decline on Sunday and by early Monday morning, it reached the coldest temperatures in the last 20 years. Howling winds, combined with dangerously low temperatures, drove the wind chill to more than 20 degrees below zero. The actual temperature at sunrise on Monday morning was below zero. The extreme weather prompted school cancellations Monday and Tuesday in many area school districts, including Adrian.
Yoss Thriftway believes in the ongoing need for early reading and early learning for Adrian’s youngsters. A $1,000 donation from General Mills, which was won in a contest by Yoss Thriftway, was donated to the Parents as Teachers Program (PAT) last month. But Yoss Thriftway did not stop at just that donation. Book card cut-outs were sold to customers in the amount of $1.00 or $5.00 each. With a strong show of support for the Parents as Teachers Program, the book drive brought in $1,154.00 and two boxes of books!
Gene Irvin, Adrian Bank CEO, recently presented a check for $700.00 to the Adrian Fire Department. The donation will be used to purchase of one set of CPR mannequins to be used in training classes for the community. A second set will be purchased when funds are available. The Department hopes to have a total of 15 mannequins and two AED trainers soon. Each CPR set includes five adult/child mannequins, five babies and one AED trainer.
The Bates County Sheriff’s Office has entered into a lease agreement with the property owner located at 905 N Orange, Butler, Mo 64730. The lease is a four year lease with the County taking ownership at the end of the lease term.
The leased building, located at 905 N Orange was originally the Coca-Cola building and later Kelly’s Trucking before becoming storage for Prospect Rentals. The building will see a new life with multiple purposes to include storage facility, vehicle processing facility and storage, along with records storage and K9 training facility.
With the ever-changing use of technology, the need for dictionaries for Adrian students has changed. Instead of a bound book of numerous words, they now access a student dictionary using I-pads or other computers at the school. Every year the Adrian Optimist Club earmarks funds to purchase dictionaries for Adrian students. Because they no longer need a dictionary, funds from the Floyd Buhr Memorial will now be used to help Adrian High School sophomores, juniors and seniors pay for dual credit college classes from Central Methodist University and the University of Missouri - Kansas City.
The Adrian Blackhawks hosted the Lone Jack Mules Friday, December 20 in non-conference action. The Lady Blackhawks defeated the Lady Mules 56 to 34. Coach Basore commented, “We came out in the second half and gained control of the game.”
In the boys contest, Adrian was defeated 48 to 37.

On December 17, the Adrian Blackhawks wrestling team hosted Eldon, El Dorado Springs, and Nevada. The Blackhawks faced the El Dorado Springs Bulldogs first, defeating them 47-36.
The second match-up pitted the Blackhawks against the Nevada Tigers. The JV wrestlers started the meet off with a couple of matches. On the varsity end, the Tigers walked away with a narrow victory on this one, 42-39.

An awards banquet was held by Bates County Memorial Hospital on December 19, 2013. Mr. Ed Hannon, Chief Executive Officer, announced that Ms. Karen Landers was voted by her peers as the 2013 Employee of the Year. Karen received an engraved plaque and a gift from the hospital. Karen has been employed as a Registered Nurse since 1994. She has worked as an Emergency Room nurse and is currently the RN Supervisor of the Outpatient Specialty Clinic. The hospital is honored to recognize Karen as its Employee of the Year.
During the Christmas assembly the Adrian R-III elementary students did acts of kindness for others and each time they were able to complete a link in the kindness chain. The chain almost went completely around the elementary gym. Way to go, elementary for being kind to each other. With Santa hats on the teachers sang, We wish you a Merry Christmas at the end of the program to all the students.

As historical articles recording information on displays at Frontier Village are written, Pat Patterson must be remembered. The Western Missouri Antique Tractor and Machinery Association (WMAT&MA) is blessed to have more than one Patterson mower in the museum. Pat, working in his Patterson Manufacturing facility, determined the need for a better way to control grass. He was also knowledgeable of doing it correctly; therefore he applied for and was granted patent number US 2595976 on May 6, 1952.
Cecil Farris DePriest, 72, Adrian, MO, formerly of Bucyrus, Kansas, passed away peacefully, after a short illness, on Saturday, December 28, 2013, surrounded by family. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 2, 2014 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian, Missouri with graveside services at 3:00 p.m. Thursday at the Bucyrus Cemetery in Bucyrus, Kansas. Louis Hubert Terrell was born on September 13, 1927 in Vinita, Oklahoma to Ester Cleara (Boatman) Terrell and Aaron Pryor Terrell. Louis was ushered through heaven’s gates on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at the age of 86.
After an extensive search, Adrian R-III Board of Education hires Don Lile as the next Superintendent
President David Knuth opened the regular monthly Adrian R-III Board of Education meeting on December 17, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. Adrian High School Principal Don Lile was presented with a contract to replace Dr. Kirk Eidson, who is retiring as the District’s Superintendent effective July 1, 2014. Lile signed the contract. He thanked the board for being given the opportunity to serve the students and the district as superintendent. Lile and his wife are happy about moving to Adrian and becoming an integral part of the community.
Nine students from across the metro area won awards for designing a book cover as part of Price Chopper’s annual “Bag Your Favorite Book” contest. Winners were surprised with their prizes at school assemblies. This year’s first grade winner is from Archie Elementary School in Archie, MO. Price Chopper received nearly 9,000 entries for the contest.
The Adrian Optimist Club is pleased to honor Students of the Month from the Miami, Ballard, and Adrian schools. Criteria for this honor centers on outstanding academic and civic achievement and school spirit. Staff at each of the schools make the selection, and their decision is based on expansion of these criteria. Each student is honored with a certificate of recognition from the Adrian Optimist Club and $20.00 in Adrian Chamber of Commerce “Chamber Bucks”.
The Adrian Blackhawks opened WEMO Conference action on Thursday, December 19 as they hosted the Miami Eagles.
In the girls contest Adrian defeated the Lady Eagles 52 to 19. Coach Basore said, “It was good for everybody to get playing time.”
The boys defeated Miami by the score of 69 to 48. “The boys did a great job of getting to the rim and finishing” commented Coach Basore.

Wednesday, December 18 the Adrian VFW drew out the winners for their fundraiser. Gary Burns of Drexel did the honors of drawing out the names. First prize was a rifle donated by Glen Jones of Crooked Fence. It was won by Ronnie Koehn. Second prize went to Bill Perkey of Rich Hill, $100 cash, donated by David Knuth. Third prize was awarded to Jana Tate, an American Flag from VFW Post 1935.
Mary Rapp, 86, Harrisonville, Missouri, died Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at Golden Years Care Center in Harrisonville. Funeral services were held December 20 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville with burial in Milo Cemetery, Milo, Missouri.
The Adrian Trap Teams participated in the Area 7 FFA Trap Shooting League, with two top ten individuals. Adrian A received first place out of 14 teams. Conrad Walley was high individuall, 1st place individual scores, and Wade Cumpton was 5th out of over 80 FFA trap shooters.

On December 6th and 7th the Adrian Blackhawks Wrestling team traveled to Pleasant Hill High School for the annual Steve Leslie Invitational Tournament.
Adrian had four wrestlers advance to the medal rounds: Dakota Jones, 126#, second place; Michael Lopez, 132#, third place; Austin Williams, 160#, third place; Christian Graham, 285#, third place. The following Blackhawk wrestlers also placed within the top ten: Jeremy Dryden, 120#, seventh and Zachary Shannon, 138#, eighth.
After having two games cancelled last week, the Adrian Blackhawks hosted the Liberal Bulldogs on Monday, December 16.
In the varsity girls game El Dorado defeated Adrian 73 to 52. Coach Basore said, “I thought we played well for 3 quarters. They eventually wore us down in the fourth.”
In the boy’s contest Adrian was defeated 71 to 58. “The boys played with great energy” commented Coach Basore, “and competed hard. We didn’t get shots to fall down the stretch.”
Yoss Thriftway embraces the R-III Parents as Teachers Program in an effort to give young children books to read
Yoss Thriftway participated in a display contest hosted by General Mills in which the contest winner would receive a donation to be given to an organization that participates in the Box Tops for Education Program. Yoss Thriftway won the contest. The Yoss family is full of educators, both past and present, who value early learning for children. With that in mind, Yoss Thriftway is donating the contest winnings totaling $1,000 to the Parents as Teachers (PAT) Program in the Adrian R-III School District. On 12/10/13 the Bates County Sheriff’s Office responded to RR1 Box 252A Amoret, Missouri. The deputies were there in search of Earnest Schmidt. Schmidt was wanted for a Parole Violation for Burglary, Stealing and failing to complete a drug treatment program. In conjunction to the warrant, Bates County detectives wanted to speak with Schmidt in reference to an assault and several burglaries in the area. Schmidt was then taken into custody without incident.

The Wolf Den of Adrian Cub Scout Pack 238 presented the colors at the Adrian Lions Club Christmas party Monday night, December 9. One Den each month presents the U.S., Missouri and Christian flags for the Lions Club. Members of the Wolf Den present were Seth Ford, Jayden Wicklin, Devon Keyton, Aiden Lybarger and Isiah Lewis, along with leaders Richard Ford and Jake Wicklin.. Ronald Lee Cole, age 52, of Appleton City, Missouri died Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Missouri. He was born February 18, 1961 to Robert Lee and Lavern Jeanette Smothers Cole in Paola, Kansas.
