Friends and family from throughout the Midwest gathered to celebrate Esther (Gutshall) Summers’ 100th birthday on April 22 at the WMAT&MA’s Frontier Village. Esther, who turned 100 on April 25, currently resides in Raymore. In addition to a potluck dinner with her family and friends, several of her former students arrived later in the day for cake, picture taking and sharing their favorite memories of the guest of honor. Esther is a 1929 graduate of Adrian.
The Kidz Zone Learning Center, under the direction of Shaunna Petty and Michaella Nisely, participated in Earth Day activities. The kids took their extra items to the recycle bins behind City Hall. The kids also picked up all the trash at the Adrian Optimist Park. They really enjoyed saving their planet!
Juanita Florence Nestlerode, age 87 of Butler, Missouri died Monday, April 16, 2012 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. She was born April 16, 1925 to Charles Newman and Josephine Anna Florence Short Howell in Bates County, Missouri.

Barbara Ann Keller Preston, age 81 formerly of Belton, Missouri passed away Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Missouri. She was born November 3, 1930 to Siegel Frederick and Lois Mae Freetly Keller in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Adrian students have been given a variety of opportunities to participate in contests organized through the school or through local civic groups. That good old Blackhawk pride has shined bright with students being honored for their achievements in the following contests: Oratorical Zone Level Contest, 6th Grade Quiz Bowl, FFA and Substance Abuse Poster Contest.
James Wood and Morgan Jenkins participated in the regional competition at Clinton last weekend. They were both runners up in the contest.
On April 9, members of the Bates County Sheriff’s Office, Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office and the CNET Drug Task Force concluded a month long narcotics investigation. The conclusion ended with two arrests in the parking lot of Walmart in Nevada, MO. Agents seized two pounds of pure methamphetamine with a street value of approximately $100,000.00. The methamphetamine was being delivered to a local dealer that would have put it in circulation in our area.
The Adrian Chamber of Commerce’s featured business for April is Bates County Industries. The business, a sheltered workshop, is located at Route 1, Butler, near the Butler Memorial Airport. It has been in Bates County for at least 30 years and was formerly located in a building just off the southeast corner of the Butler Square.
The Adrian Optimist Club is pleased to honor Students of the Month from the Miami, Ballard and Adrian schools. Adrian FCCLA showed its support for kids in need on Friday, April 13. Spearheaded by FCCLA Member Kireston Luptak and Advisor Julie Carr, high school students joined Tom’s Shoes in an effort to help raise awareness of the impact a pair of shoes can have on a child’s life by going without shoes for a day. This effort, “One Day Without Shoes,” changes lives, and Adrian High School students jumped on board to help out. For a donation of $5.00, students were permitted to go without shoes during the school day. Some of the “One Day Without Shoes” participants are pictured.
The Adrian Blackhawks hosted a track meet on Thursday, April 12. The girls tied for 6th place and the boys placed 3rd with a total of 72 points. Coach Robards stated, “I am pleased with how the girls performed given the weather we had. We have been very luck so far to have great weather and they adjusted very well. We had two girls set new personal records, Jessica Still in the long jump and Morgan Jenkins in the 300m hurdles. Also, Quincy Keating placed higher in the triple jump than she has all season by taking 2nd.
TOPS #814 Adrian met Thursday evening, April 12. Members present were Vianne Briscoe, Ann Weeks, Janice McCully, Annie Zellmer, Mary Lee Oates, Beverly Fuller, and Sylvia Eldridge. Chapter members were glad to see ‘snow bird,’ Ann Weeks! The group had four losses, two gains, and one turtle (stayed the same). The yearly installation ceremony was held.

With family and friends present, Adrian’s Eric Moles and longtime friend and rival Timmy Powell (formerly of Miami High School) inked a four-year deal to play collegiate football at Culver-Stockton University last Wednesday. The university has granted scholarships for both players after thorough review by Head Coach Jack Schrader.
Powell appreciates the opportunity to play for Head Coach Schrader. “This is a good opportunity to play basketball at Culver-Stockton. Getting to play with a great friend is another opportunity,” Powell said.
Lonnie Ray Wackerman, son of Hazel and Bert Wackerman, was born April 13, 1934 in Adrian, Missouri. He was called home to heaven on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the age of 78. Ali Feris was pronounced the winner of Adrian Project Prom’s 5th annual t-shirt design contest on March 21st. There were five submissions and six participants in all. The theme for this year’s prom is “Enchanted Forest”. This is not the first time for Ali as she placed second last year and won in 2010. Her art will have the distinguished honor of being printed on over 130 t-shirts that will be given to students and their dates who attend the after prom party at Dave & Buster’s.

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) had their State Recognition Days (SRD) in St. Louis on March 30 & 31. Over 1200 TOPS members gathered for the event. Among them was Sylvia Eldridge a member and the leader of TOPS #814 Adrian. On Saturday morning, Eldridge was honored as the second place in Division 9 winner in the State of Missouri. Division 9 is the surgery weight-loss classification in TOPS. Eldridge’s story follows:
The Adrian varsity track teams participated in the Midway Invitational Tuesday, April 3. The girls finished in 5th place and the boys finished 3rd with 87 points. Coach Robards stated, “This wasn’t one of our best meets. We struggled in several events where we have been strong. A few season firsts to point out, Brittany Williams finished in the top 3 in the 1600m run and in the 800m run, Kamiron Luptak finished 1st in the 400m dash and also set a new personal record, and our 4x400 relay team also set a new personal record. Coach Cochran said, “The kids ran really well today.
About 300 families are receiving goods and/or services from the Bates County Community Food Pantry in Butler. For 10 years now the pantry has provided meals and services for families in need. It is located at 709 W Ohio Street in Butler and is open Monday - Thursday from 8:30am - 3:00pm.
Communities united once again to help raise funds for the Bates County Children’s Center. Last Saturday a large crowd attended the 5th Annual Casino Night at the Adrian Optimist Building. Countless people donated their time, money and resources to help raise funds for the Center. Games, mouse races, prizes and an auction made the night a great time for all while supporting a very needed youth organization.
Adrian High School freshmen Morgan Jenkins and James Wood won the local Oratorical Contest hosted by the Adrian Optimist Club for their presentations with this year’s theme: “How Optimisim Helps Me Overcome Obstacles.” Their wins in Adrian landed them an opportunity to advance to the Zone level to compete against winners from other schools. Both Morgan and James took first place at the Zone contest in Clinton, MO. They will now advance to Regionals on April 14, 2012 in Clinton using the same speech they delivered in Adrian.
March was colon cancer awareness month. To help bring awareness to Bates County, the staff of Bates County Memorial Hospital provided guided, walk-through tours of a giant colon display on Thursday, March 29, 2012.

The Adrian Blackhawks baseball team opened their 2012 season on Monday, March 26. They traveled to Lakeland and were defeated 10-12. Tuesday, March 27 they were on the road again as they played KC Lutheran at Belton and won 13-5. Their first home game was held on Thursday, March 29 against Archie and they were defeated 23-1. On Saturday the Blackhawks went to Cole Camp and won the contest 16-6.

Students from Adrian R-III School attended the annual Missouri Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Leadership Conference, March 25-27, at the Holiday Inn Executive Center, Columbia, MO. The delegates from across the state represented more than 11,00 members of Missouri FCCLA. The Adrian Project Prom committee is hard at it again! Preparing for the annual after prom party always proves to be a challenge for all involved. On top of that, we are giving special attention to our scholarship process. It’s our spoken purpose and practice to provide a positive and healthy environment in the hours following the catered dinner and dance of the prom but what we really care about is the long term futures of our young people.
