AHS Lady Blackhawks “Volley for a Cure”

The Lady Blackhawks took on the El Dorado Bulldogs last Tuesday, October 18. They played hard but fell short of the win, at least on the court. Between the Junior Varsity and Varsity volleyball games, the players asked an honored group of winners to come to the court for recognition. It was an emotional, heartfelt moment when the JV and Varsity players, Head Coach Kelsi Robards and Assistant Coach Jessie McWilliams presented certificates to the breast cancer survivors in the crowd.

Be proud - make an effort to help save lives

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Adrian Tuesday, November 8 from 1:00-6:00 p.m. at the Adrian Optimist Building. You only have to be feeling well that day, be at least 17 years of age, weigh 110 lbs. and have a good iron count. Most deferred donors are due to low iron count. To help increase your iron count, eat meats, fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads and molasses.

Adrian Chamber recognizes Caskey Law Firm in Butler

Completes Eagle Scout project

Chance Gregory from Adrian Boy Scout Troop 238 completed his Eagle Scout project on October 22 and 23, 2011 with help of his fellow scouts and supervising leaders. Chance’s project was to build and install birdhouses at Medical Lodge in Butler, Missouri. He also decided to build a picnic table for the Courtyard at Medical Lodge.

Blackhawks guaranteed a playoff spot with 33-20 win over Cole Camp

The Adrian Blackhawks traveled to Cole Camp to take on the Blue Birds in the second round of district play. Adrian left with a 33-20 victory that ensured at least one more game after the regular season winds down next Thursday. They will know their playoff opponent after this week’s scores are tallied.

Lady Blackhawks fall to El Dorado

The Adrian Lady Blackhawks volleyball team hosted the El Dorado Springs Lady Bulldogs in the last game of their regular season last Tuesday night, October 18. In three very exciting games, Adrian finally fell to their opponent, 22-25, 25-22, 32-30. Their overall match record stands at 16-11-1. Coach Robards said, “We played a great match tonight. When we were behind we never gave up and when we were ahead we never let up. Even though we didn’t get the win I am very proud of the girls.”

Horse Fun Show

The Adrian Bit and Spur Horse Fun Show October 22 enjoyed perfect weather and lots of new faces.  And what a turn out! Riders of all ages from Adrian to Paola to Oak Grove, one from Minnesota, and a visitor from Italy. Everybody was a winner and enjoyed a great afternoon with 22 events showing off horsemanship and sportsmanship with lots of laughter on the side.

Sidney Wimsatt would like to proudly announce the birth of her brother, Austin Thadias, born on Wednesday, August 31 at 12:17 pm. Austin weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces and was 21 inches long. Parents are Thad and Leanne Wimsatt of Peculiar. Paternal grandparents are Randy and Vicki Wimsatt of Adrian. Junior Shipley, 91, of Archie, Missouri, died Saturday, October 22, 2011 at his home in Archie. Graveside services were held at 10:00 am Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, Missouri with Rev. Joe Crook officiating. Contributions may be made to the Grace Hospice.

Virginia Florence Mizner 1913 - 2011

Virginia Florence Mizner, age 98 of Butler, Missouri died Monday, October 17, 2011 in Butler. She was born March 2, 1913 to James Daniel and Edith Rebecca Palm Eckert in Bates County, Missouri.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler. Burial, was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Contributions may be made to the Butler Senior Center or Bates County Food Pantry.

Glen Oren Jenkins 1921 - 2011

Glen Oren Jenkins, age 89 of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville, Missouri. He was born November 15, 1921 to Max Earless and Minnie Lee Poindexter Jenkins at the farm home in Mound Township, Bates Couty, Missouri.

Stella “Dollie” Benz 1915 - 2011

Stella Novella (Dollie) Morgenstern Benz, 96, Adrian, MO, died Sunday, October 16, 2011 at Adrian Manor in Adrian, MO. Dollie was born January 26, 1915 in Lincoln, MO, the daughter of Samuel and Myrtle (Randsdall) Morgenstern.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 22, 2011, 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Adrian, Missouri. Interment was in the Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Warrensburg, MO.

SGM Donald L. Ashbaugh (Ret.) 1929 - 2011

Donald Lloyd Ashbaugh, 82 of Lacey, Washington, passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Madigan Army Medical Center. He was born July 10, 1929 in Adrian, Missouri to Virgil O. and Mary Elizabeth “Betty” (Hutchison) Ashbaugh.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Forest Funeral Home, Olympia, Washington, with burial in Forest Memorial Gardens.

Single vehicle accident near Drexel leaves two teens with serious injuries

Energy levels and pumped up enthusiasm were evident wherever you turned to look in Drexel last Saturday morning. Drexel High School was the site of the WEMO Conference Volleyball Tournament. The football team was sitting down together enjoying a breakfast, preparing to meet up with the Gyphons of University Charter Academy later that afternoon for the first Class 1 District 8 game. Word traveled of an 11 o’clock cheering “send-off” for the boys’ bus at the curve north of town. Game time was to be 2 o’clock.

Burn Ban in Effect

Fire Chief Gary Dizney said on Monday, October 17, that the no open burn advisory is still in effect. “Until we get a significant rainfall, there is a no open burning ban within  the Adrian city limits,” Chief Dizney said.  That notification is also an advisory for rural residents throughout the entire county as well as in the Adrian area.

Chief Selle reminds everyone that the emergency number for the Police Department is still 816-297-2121. That is also the emergency number for the Adrian Fire Department and the Bates County Ambulance.

If you need to talk to a police officer on a non-emergency situation, you can call the Butler dispatcher at 1-660-679-6131 and request an officer return your call,  or you can call the local number at 816-297-2106. As the officers are in and out of the office you can leave a message at the last number and an officer will return your call as soon as possible.

An All-State accomplishment, one of a few in AHS history

Adrian High School Senior Alexis LaBat has been involved in music from the time she was able to speak, including her years in Adrian’s choir. She sang with an elite group at the Lincoln Center in New York last April. She made All-District Choir in 2010 - 2011 and 2011 - 2012. In a feat that has not been accomplished more than a few times in Adrian High School history, Alexis has been selected for All-State Choir. Four out of 40 altos in the district made All-State Choir. Out of those four, Alexis was the second vocalist chosen.

Blackhawks defeat Sherwood 21-12 in first round of district play

The Adrian Blackhawks traveled to Creighton Friday night in the first week of District action. The Blackhawks left victorious, defeating the Marksmen 21-12.

Lady Blackhawks drop two in conference play

The Adrian Lady Blackhawks hosted the Rich Hill Lady Tigers on Tuesday, October 11. In a three game match Adrian was defeated 16-25, 25-12, 25-20.
Coach Robards said, “We played great the first game and were unable to maintain control the second and third games. Our defense just couldn’t get it together, causing us to give up way too many key points.”

Senior volleyball players recognized

Senior Night for the Adrian Lady Blackhawks was held last Thursday night when they hosted the Archie Lady Whirlwinds. Adrian places 5th in WEMO Conference Tournament

The Adrian Lady Blackhawks participated in the WEMO Conference tournament on Saturday, October 15. In their first round they fell to Midway, placing them on the losing side of the bracket. In their next two games they defeated Miami and Drexel to come away with a 5th place finish in the tournament. Coach Robards said, “Even though we placed fifth today I’m pleased with the way we played. I think we could have won against Midway had we not had so many hitting and serving errors. Unfortunately that loss put us in the loser’s bracket and the best place we could play for was fifth.”

Receives 50 year pin

The Masonic Lodge Crescent Hill #368 honored Perry Fritts last Thursday night, October 13. Perry, who is a long time member, received his 50 year pin. Family and friends were present to share in the ceremony.

Gerald Wickham (Wick) Tyner 1920 - 2011

Gerald Wickham (Wick) Tyner, 90 years old, passed away on October 8, 2011 from complications of Parkinson’s disease at Green Tree Assisted Living Facility in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was born on October 20, 1920 in Bethany, Missouri to Mary and Merle Tyner.

Funeral services were held Thursday, October 13, 2011 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Dr. Terry Davis officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri. Contributions may be made to Butler First Baptist Church or Salvation Army.

Jo Ann Ferguson 1929 - 2011

Jo Ann Ferguson, age 82, of Adrian, passed away Saturday, October 8, 2011 at her home in Adrian. Jo Ann was born June 9, 1929 in Oxnard, California, the daughter of Ralph and Anna Margaret Fenton Lotspeich.

She is survived by Jim and Diane Ferguson of Adrian, MO and Fenton Ferguson of Lathrop, MO; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Under the direction of Band Director Julie Newsome, the Adrian Blackhawks Marching Band received a 3rd place trophy in Class 3A at the University of Central Missouri’s Band Day on Saturday, October 8. This is the first time the Blackhawks have competed in Class 3A.

Blackhawks Homecoming spoiled by Indians 7-6

The Adrian Blackhawks lost another heartbreaker this past Friday at the sports complex, 7-6, to the visiting Osceola Indians. All the scoring took place in the first half but a valiant second half field goal attempt that went wide left was the difference in the game.

Lady Blackhawks strike out in round two of District play

Class 2 District 12 softball was played last week, Oct. 5, 6, and 7 at Sherwood. The Adrian Lady Blackhawks went up against the Sherwood Lady Marksmen in first round action Wednesday. They defeated the Lady Marksmen 13 to 2 to move on to round two on Thursday. Adrian played the number one seed Warsaw Lady Wildcats. They fell short of a victory, losing 7 to 4 to end their 2011 season.

Lady Blackhawks volleyball loses to Osceola; wins over Drexel

Tuesday, October 4 the Lady Blackhawks volleyball team made the trip to Osceola for conference play. Adrian was defeated by Osceola in two games, 25-8, 25-21. Coach Robards said, “Osceola is a great team. We let our nerves get the best of us in the first game and did not play well at all. Once we settled down we were able to shut down their offense, allowing us to get a lead on them in the second game. Unfortunately we were unable to keep them down and ended up losing the match. We hope to see them again at the conference tournament.”

New Arrival - Carson Alan Fairman

Anna Mae Fairman is proud to announce the birth of her baby brother, Carson Alan. Carson was born September 8, 2011 at 11:41 a.m., at Menorah Medical Center. He weighed 8 lbs. 1 oz. and was 20 inches long. Proud parents are Jason and Cara Fairman of Adrian.

Maternal grandparents are Ron and Deidre Camerer of Adrian and maternal great-grandmother is Mary Lou Stafford of Harrisonville. Paternal grandparents are Alan and Linda Fairman of Ballard and paternal great-grandparents are Melvin and Etta Sue Fairman also of Ballard.

Engaged to Wed...Markworth - Mathis

MaryBeth and Bryce Markworth of Archie, MO and David and Michelle Stockman of Kansas City, MO are happy to announce the upcoming marriage of their daughter, Megan, to Patrick Mathis, son of Bruce and Kim Mathis of Archie, MO.

An October 22 wedding is planned at the United Methodist Church in Adrian.

Named to All Tournament Team

The Adrian Blackhawks junior high volleyball team participated in the Rich Hill Tournament September 24. At the end of the tournament, an all tournament team was announced and Malory Moles, Adrian, was named to the team.

Award winning author visits Adrian R-III

Award-winning author Judy Young visited Adrian R-III on Thursday, October 5. She spent the day speaking to the students about what it’s like to be an author. She read books that she has written, and shared the writing process and what goes on behind the scenes with the publication of her award-winning children’s fiction, nonfiction and poetry books. After school on the 5th, Judy also conducted a poetry writing workshop for the teachers.

Pictured, Adrian third graders learned how Ms. Young’s book “Minnow and Rose” came to life in words and pictures.

Lady Blackhawks volleyball action

Tuesday night, September 27 the Lady Blackhawks hosted the Miami Lady Eagles and defeated them in two games, 25-18 and 25-5. Adrian now holds a 12-6-1 match record and is 1-1 in conference play. Coach Robards commented on the game, “The first game against Miami was not good in any way. We struggled to adjust to their style of offense which caused a lot of miscommunication on our side of the net. The second game we came out ready and played a much better game. Brittany Williams went on a 16 point serving run giving us the momentum we lacked in the first game.”

The JV volleyball team took 2nd place in the KC Lutheran Tournament Saturday, October 1. Senior Night for Lady Blackhawks Softball

Eight Senior Lady Blackhawks softball players were honored Monday night on their home field for their last home game of the season. Honored were: Kortney Eidson, daughter of Ron and Becky Eidson; Kaley Keating, daughter of Kari and Phil Keating; Brooke Hill, daughter of Dawn Rafferty and Ross Hill; Amber Chamberlain, daughter of Tracy and Jason Chamberlain; Ali Feris, daughter of Chuck and Marilyn Feris; Heather Greer, daughter of Theresa and Michael Greer; Toni Perrymann, daughter of Terry and Dee Perrymann and Kristy Ray, daughter of Jim and Marie Ray.

Wilbur L. Schmoll 1923 - 2011

Wilbur L. Schmoll, age 87 of Ballard, Missouri died Monday, September 26, 2011 at Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Overland Park, Kansas. He was born December 27, 1923 to Henry Wilson and Bertha Leota Bell Schmoll in Cass County, Missouri.

Stanley Ray Harper, Sr. 1956 - 2011

Stanley Ray Harper Sr., age 55 of Amoret, Missouri died Sunday, September 25, 2011 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Missouri.
