Community Day in Adrian - Students give back
This past spring the Adrian R-III Middle School and High School staff began brainstorming ways to accomplish the following goal set for by the R-III Board of Education: “The district and individual schools will annually develop, review, revise, and implement strategies and action agendas to improve communication with parents and community involvement in their children’s learning and attendance at activities.”
AHS Homecoming Preview

Adrian’s Homecoming is just around the corner! Students are busy designing floats for the parade, preparing outfits for dress up days, and ready to support the Blackhawks against the Indians!
Each class will be making a float for the Homecoming parade. A portion of the float will be made of nonperishable items that will be donated to the community. The rest of the float will continue to be made of chicken wire and napkins. Floats will be showcased during the parade on Friday, and the winning float will be announced during halftime of the football game.
Adrian Chamber features MoJo Backflow Service

The Adrian Chamber of Commerce’s featured business for September is the A&A/MoJo Backflow Service. The business, owned by Monte Johnson, of Adrian and his father, Don Johnson, of Belton has been in operation about 12 years. Monte’s wife Charlotte and their two children, Anson and Abbie are also involved in the business.
Hot Ball Jackpot winner
Every Monday night the Adrian Optimist Club is open for people to play bingo. The Hot Ball Jackpot amount had climbed to $3,250 as of Monday, September 26. The numbers were in place for two lucky bingo winners, who received equal shares of the Jackpot. Pictured, winner Verginia Gales of Butler shows off her winnings.
Blackhawks score 55-7 victory over Rich Hill

Absolutely perfect football weather last Friday set the stage for a near flawless performance by the Adrian Blackhawks. Adrian traveled to Rich Hill to take on the Tigers and left on the victorious end of a 55-7 score.
Adrian dominated in every offensive category. As a team Adrian rushed for 338 yards to Rich Hill’s 83. Sawyer Highley led the way with 91 yards on fourteen attempts. Adrian’s offense also netted 84 yards passing to Rich Hill’s 8.
Lady Blackhawks softball wins over St. Mary’s; Loses to Notre Dame De Sion
Thursday, September 22 the Lady Blackhawks softball team hosted St. Mary’s and defeated them 17 to 0. Kaley Keating had an outstanding night on the pitcher’s mound. She went the full 4 innings, striking out 6, walking 4 and allowing only 2 hits.
Monday, September 26 Adrian was on the road to Notre Dame De Sion. The Lady Blackhawks were defeated 11 to 1. Pitching for Adrian was Lesley Cox and Kristy Ray. Lesley went 4 innings, striking out 3 and Kristy pitched 2 innings, striking out 2.

Right: My name is Blake Doody and I’m with the Altona 4-H Club. This last year, I was elected as county council and my 4-H club reporter. My projects were country cured ham, photography, foods and arts and crafts. My favorite project was photography because I enjoy getting out and taking pictures.

Ruby Marlene Williams, age 56 of Amsterdam, Missouri died Saturday, September 24, 2011 at her home in Amsterdam. She was born November 14, 1954 to Harry Alfred and Dorothy Ilene Robison Williams in Kansas City, Missouri.
Ruby’s wishes were to be cremated. Private family inurnment at Sharon Cemetery, Drexel, Missouri at a later date.

Mary Kathleen “Kathy” Williams, age 57 of Raymore, Missouri died Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at her home in Raymore. She was born November 8, 1953 to Charles Grover and Sarah Genevieve Branton Amos in Kansas City, Missouri.
Funeral services were Saturday, September 24, 2011 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Pastor Chris Snyder officiating. Burial in Scott Cemetery, Amsterdam, Missouri. Contributions may be made to the Merwin Christian Church or Heartland Hospice.

Grace Veronica Gendron Taylor, 86 of Harrisonville, Mo., died September 23, 2011 at Adrian Manor in Adrian, MO. Grace was born February 17, 1925 in Worcester, Mass., daughter of Arthur E. and Anna M. Gendron.
Cremation, with memorial visitation at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Harrisonville. Mass of Christain Burial will be at 11 a.m. with Fr. Christian Malewski as celebrant. Burial will follow in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville. Memorial contributions are suggested to Adrian Manor, or Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

Lady Blackhawks volleyball score wins over Butler and Ballard
The Adrian Lady Blackhawks volleyball team hosted the Lady Bears from Butler on Tuesday, September 13. Adrian got off to a very slow start in the first game as they lost 15-25. The girls came out strong in the second game and defeated the Lady Bears 25-12. The third game was close but Adrian pulled off a 25-23 victory to take the match. Coach Robards said, “Butler was a tough match for us. We made many defensive errors and had several missed serves. It’s tough to win matches when we make that many errors. Fortunately for us we were able to pull it off and come out with a win.”
Lady Blackhawks fall to Archie and win over Lone Jack
The Lady Blackhawks softball team traveled to Archie last Thursday and were defeated 9 to 4. Pitching for Adrian were Lesley Cox and Kristy Ray. Lesley went 1 inning, striking out 1 and Kristy pitched 5 innings, striking out 5.
On Monday night Adrian was on the road again as they traveled to Lone Jack. The Lady Blackhawks defeated Lone Jack 9 to 8. Kristy Ray pitched 6 innings, striking out 3 and Lesley Cox pitched 1 inning and struck out 1.

“Come on, Adrian, let’s recycle!”
The City of Adrian received a grant from the Quad-Lakes Solid Waste Management District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to purchase seven recycling trailers and establish a convenience drop recycling center in a fenced area behind Adrian City Hall at 16 E. 5th Street. City Administrator Lori Williams said, “The recycling center is open to anyone. You don’t have to be an Adrian resident to use our center.”
Bates County Sheriff’s Office installs new equipment
The Bates County Sheriff’s Office recently installed Cold Fire Extinguishers in all patrol cars as an added way to protect and serve. On September 14, 2011, Ed McFadden, a Cold Fire representative, conducted a demonstration at the Bates County Fairgrounds for area law enforcement, fire departments, EMS workers, and others to show how the extinguishers can be one of many life saving tools. In particular, McFadden talked about ways the extinguisher would be beneficial in traffic-related emergencies.

Brian Lee Shelton, son of John and Martha (Poore) Shelton, was born October 12, 1974 in Lawrence, Kansas. He went home to be with Jesus on September 16, 2011 and had obtained the age of thirty six years, eleven months and four days.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at the Eminence High School Gymnasium in Eminence, MO with Rev. Randy Ferguson and Terry Richardson officiating. Interment was in New Eminence Cemetery in Eminence, MO under the direction of Duncan Funeral Homes.

Geraldine “Gerry” Elizabeth Johnson, age 74 of Butler, Missouri died Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri. She was born December 26, 1936 to Joseph and Berniece Gertrude Page Miller in Kansas City.

Seth and Delisa Johnson of Stark, MO announce the birth of their son, Grady Lee Johnson. He was born at 2:17 p.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, weighing 9 lbs. 1 oz., 21 1/2” long. Grady has a big brother Boone, to welcome him home.
Grandparents are Terry and Delia Hubbard of Adrian, MO and Kevin and Cheri Johnson of Grandby, MO. Great grandparents are Stella and Arlin Vaughn, Regina Hubbard and June Carney.
Communities unite to pay respect
American Red Cross blood drive in Adrian
Thirty-eight donors showed up to help save a life on Tuesday, September 6, at the Red Cross Bloodmobile. Thirty good units of blood were collected with eight donors being deferred for minor reasons.
The next blood drive will be November 8 and we will be looking forward to seeing you.

Lady Blackhawks volleyball takes 4th in Archie tournament
The Adrian Lady Blackhawks participated in the 2011 Archie Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, September 10. Due to the construction of Archie’s new gymnasium, only one gym was available so Pool A, consisting of Archie, Drexel, Miami and K.C. Lutheran, was played at Archie and Pool B, consisting of Adrian, Ballard, Butler, and Hume was played at Adrian.
Lady Blackhawks defeat Sherwood
The Adrian Blackhawks volleyball team hosted the Lady Marksmen from Sherwood Monday, September 12. It took three games but the Lady Blackhawks took the victory 25-16, 18-25, 25-16. Coach Robards said, “We played a great first and third game. Our defense as the best I have ever seen it. We continue to improve with every match."

JV volleyball defeats Sherwood
The JV Lady Blackhawks defeated the Sherwood JV Lady Marksmen in two games, 24-26 and 25-19 Monday, September 12 at home. Coach Robards commented, “We started our game off a little rough. The girls had to adjust to their new positions and also fill the void of Kaitlyn Miller, who has advanced to the varsity level. Overall the girls worked really well. We finally found our groove and were able to pull out a victory.”

Adrian PTO/Yoss Thriftway Receipts Program to benefit Adrian R-3 School

Adrian PTO is pleased to partner with Yoss Thriftway again this year in a fundraising endeavor that benefits the students at Adrian R-III. Throughout the school year, parents and community members send in their Yoss Thriftway receipts to school or place them in designated boxes around town. Adrian PTO Receipts Officer Traci Johnson gathers the receipts and totals them. From the total amount of the receipts turned in, Yoss Thriftway donate 1% to Adrian PTO.

Richard G. Logan, 76, of Henderson, NV passed away Monday, August 1, 2011 at St. Rose Dominican Hospital in Henderson, NV.
He was united in marriage to Patricia A. Molt on March 4, 1960. To this union, they added 3 children: Dennis Logan (Gayle) of Henderson, NV, Glenda Jackson (Andy), of Boulder City, NV and Tammy Plouffs (Bill) of Port Isabel, TX.

Adrian Manor resident celebrates century birthday

Family and friends gathered at the Adrian Manor, Wednesday, August 31, to celebrate a loved one’s special birthday. Manor resident Faye Dillon reached a big milestone in her life as she turned one hundred years old.
When Faye was born to Ida Becker and Ezadore Bertoldie in Marshfield, Missouri, the 20th century was just eleven years old. That year, 1911 was when Marie Curie won the Nobel Peace Prize for Chemistry. A popular song of the day was Irving Berlin’s Alexander’s Ragtime Band.
New “Bench Mark” at Altona Community Hall
On September 13, 2009, forty-nine people were present at the Altona Community Hall to celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary of Altona Community Club. Among those present were Carl and Barbara Shubert and Judy Shubert Colburn. Carl and Judy are children of Ruth Shubert, first president of Altona Community club, organized in 1934 originally as an extension club.

Winning streak for Adrian softball team
The Lady Blackhawks took on the Sherwood Marksmen in varsity softball action on August 31, 2011. Adrian defeated Sherwood with a final score of 5 - 1.
In the Lamar Tournament on September 3, the Lady Blackhawks claimed another win against College Heights Christian with a final score of 11 - 6.
