Governor Nixon honors area firefighters

Area firefighters who assisted in Joplin following the deadly tornado in May, were honored in Harrisonville, Friday, August 26. At the reception, they were officially thanked by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon. The fire crews were also presented with medals in appreciation of their efforts.

10 Years - 9/11 We Remember

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on U.S. soil when 3,000 people died as they went about their daily lives that sunny Tuesday morning.

As reported in last week’s Adrian Journal, Adrian High School finished 8th out of 531 high schools in the State of Missouri for their test scores on the MAP test assessments and End of Course Exams. The tests were taken last spring. Adrian students in grades 3-12 excelled in Communication Arts, Mathematics, Science and Government. Students who achieved Proficient scores (grade level) or Advanced scores (above grade level) were recognized at school assemblies on Monday, August 29.

Adrian Chamber recognizes Bates County radio station

The Adrian Chamber of Commerce’s featured business for August is the Bates County Broadcasting Company. The business is the Bates County Radio Station, KMAM 1530 and KMOE FM-92, based in Butler. It was founded May 11, 1962 by Bill and Louise Thornton and Bill’s late brother Jerry. Bill and Louise’s daughter, Melody, will become the new owner of the station when the FCC action is completed. Melody began working at the station when she was about 16 years old. She has 33 years of experience in the broadcasting business.

Blackhawks open 2011 season with disappointing 27-7 loss

The Adrian Blackhawks kicked off the 2011 football season Friday night by hosting the El Dorado Springs Bulldogs at the Adrian Athletic Complex. The weather was beautiful as was the opening drive by the Blackhawks offensive unit. But the outcome was ugly for the host team and its fans as the visiting Bulldogs handed Adrian a lopsided 27-7 defeat.

Hairspray Game held

The Adrian Lady Blackawks volleyball team held the traditional Hairspray Game on Thursday night, August 25. The scrimmage game was in preparation for the 2011 season. The Lady Blackhawks will open their season on Thursday, Sept. 1 at Drexel in a double dual with Drexel and Miami.

Brunson Tenholder, 6, went fishing on Sunday, August 21 with his dad and grandpa and caught this 3 1/4 lb. bass. He was using a jig head and long john. He is the son of Brian and Nikki Tenholder, grandson of Jim and Lisa Tenholder, Jim and Kim McLay and Ed Tavener. He is the great grandson of Ruth Ann and the late Dave Grizzell, Betty and the late Alfred Tenholder, Richard and the late Ditty Jackson and Bud and the late Francis Tavener.

Billy Gene Tschudi Sr., age 50 of Adrian, Missouri died Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield, Missouri. He was born October 12, 1960 to Robert Lee and Bobbie Johnere Luscher in Harrisonville, Missouri.

Graveside services were 3 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Grant Cemetery in Creighton, Missouri with Rev. John Kukovich officiating. Contributions to American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association.

Arnolds Celebrate 50 Years

Jim Arnold and Carole Lynne Hodges were united in marriage on September 1, 1961, in Archie, Missouri. They have three daughters: April Clark & husband Travis, Anne Arnold, and Erin Arnold & fiancé Richard Kendall. They also have three granddaughters and five step-grandchildren.

Newkirks to celebrate 35th wedding anniversary

Ken and Sue Newkirk will celebrate their 35th anniversary on Sunday. The couple were married September 4, 1976. They are parents of two children, Melisa Newkirk and Daniel Newkirk and his wife Becki.

Adrian High School is ranked #8 in the State of Missouri

Each year students in grades 3-12 across the State of Missouri are required by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to complete MAP testing.  MAP assessments are required under the “Outstanding Schools Act” that was enacted in 1993.  Test results show academic achievement and program accountability.  Test results do not qualify school districts for additional funding.

Kids helping kids

In June, Payton Ritter and Bailey McMillan sold lemonade during the Adrian Citywide Garage Sale as a fundraiser to help provide aid for the victims of the F5 tornado that caused massive destruction in May. Last Saturday, the girls joined South 71 Little League Football in raising much needed funds for the Joplin Little League football team. Payton and Bailey donated $110.00 to the donation drive, bringing the total donation to about $500.00.

New dump site in Adrian?

On Sunday, August 28, the Bates County Sheriff’s Office took a report of trash dumping in Adrian. The trash was found on a gravel road just off of East 18 Highway. Deputies searched the contents and found pieces of mail that include names. The investigation is continuing and charges are pending.

The traditional Blackhawks soap game was held last Thursday, August 18 to kick off the 2011 football season. Cheerleaders Josie Lovejoy and Maddie Reynolds hold the banner as Sophomore Willie Jacks breaks through.

Football Jamboree

On Friday, August 19, Adrian hosted the annual football Jamboree at the Adrian Athletic Complex. The Blackhawks took on three different teams: Sherwood, St. Mary’s and Higginsville High Schools.

The first game of the regular season is Friday, August 26 when the Blackhawks will take on the El Dorado Springs Bulldogs at 7:00pm on their home turf.

It’s school time again! Students are probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new classmates, changes grade levels and more. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a short while.
Most teachers kick off the school year by introducing themselves and talking about what to expect during the school year. They often go over classroom rules and answer students’ questions.

The annual meeting was held on Thursday, August 11th at the Benson Center in Clinton, Missouri. The guest speaker for the evening was Chris Cariker, CEO and Executive Vice President of KAMO Power.

Jeremy and Jennifer Fly of Adrian, MO are the proud parents of a daughter, Jozie Lynn Fly. Jozie was born April 7, 2011 at St. Luke’s South in Overland Park, KS. She weighed 7 lbs. 9.9 ozs. and was 19 1/4 inches long.

Maternal grandparents are Eddie and Pam Brann of Pleasant Hill. Paternal grandparents are Bud and Ann Fly of Adrian. Paternal great grandparents are Francis and Eva Schallert of Adrian and Wanda Fly of Warrensburg.

Area schools gear up for the new year

Area schools will soon begin the 2011-2012 school year, beginning as early as Thursday, August 18 through Thursday, August 25. This year, several schools have raised their meal and milk prices while the prices remain the same at other schools. Nearly all districts will be welcoming new teachers, administrators or other staff members, when the students return for the new session.

The Adrian Community Library celebrated its 5th year anniversary on Saturday, August 6, 2011.  The event, hosted by the Adrian Community Library Board, Librarians and Volunteers, included a book sale, refreshments, and local authors presentations.

Blackhawks Football: The start of another great Blackhawks football season kicked off on Monday, August 8 at 12:01am. The Adrian community cheered on their team at “Midnight Practice”, a tradition that began in the 1986 football season by Head Coach George Bruto. Head Coach Bruto and Assistant Coaches Shaun Bruto and Matt Cochran get the players ready for their first game.

Blackhawks Volleyball: The Lady Blackhawks prepare for the 2011 volleyball season at 12:01am on Monday, August 8. New to the team this year is Head Coach Kelsi Robards.

Area men volunteer in Georgia

Bob Lotspeich (left), Archie, and Jake Whiteside (right), Adrian, have continued an annual volunteer effort. They traveled 800 miles to Ellijay, Georgia the week of July 25 through July 31, 2011. The two men and Bob’s wife Shirlene joined other volunteers to help the “New York Says Thank You Foundation” which is an organization of New York firefighters, ground zero workers, and others who were involved in the rescues and clean up of the 9-11 disaster.

The Little League World Series, a Homerun Derby and a whole lot of community pride

Brody Ford, Adrian, played in the Triple Crown Sports Little League World Series in Steamboat Springs, Colorado July 26 - July 31. Twenty-two teams competed. About this opportunity, Brody said: “My favorite part of the World Series was being able to go to Colorado with all of my team and playing hard.”

Brody’s team, the Brewers, went 1 for 3 in pool play. In a double elimination tournament, the Brewers played their hearts out the first game against the Broomfield Bulls and fell just short of a victory in extra innings.

A unique program benefits Adrian students

Yoss Thriftway is a leader in supporting youth, and owner Kip Yoss established a cooperative program years ago with Adrian PTO to benefit Adrian R-III students. Throughout the year, parents and community members send in their Yoss Thriftway receipts to school or place them in designated boxes around town. Adrian PTO Receipts Officer Traci Johnson gathers the receipts and totals them. From the total amount of the receipts turned in, Yoss Thriftway donate 1% to Adrian PTO.

Sollars family reunion held

The descendents of Guy and Freda Sollars converged on Lake Pomme de Terre to hold a family reunion the weekend of July 29-31. Allen and Cindy Sollars hosted the event with assistance from several other family members and friends who reside at the Lake. Friday evening family, friends, and guests enjoyed a delicious barbecue and a great time of renewing family bonds and catching up on all the latest news and additions. Everyone left thanking Allen and Cindy for their gracious hospitality and making plans to return in two years.

Shirley Ann Harper, age 33 of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, August 17 as the result of an automobile accident. She was born July 10, 1978 to Bobby Ray Sr. and Teresa Ilene Benjamin Johnson in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
