“A Night at the Oscars” - Homecoming 2010
It’s Homecoming week and Blackhawk Pride is in the air! Students and staff have been celebrating “A Night at the Oscars” in a variety of ways. On different themed days, they have been wearing mismatched clothes, Lady Gaga attire and more. Friday, September 24 is the ever-popular Black and Gold Day. A pep assembly at 1:00 pm in the east gym for grades 7 - 12 is the kickoff for the parade at 2:00 pm, the football game at 7:00 pm against Rich Hill, the crowning of the 2010 King and Queen at halftime, and a homecoming dance after the game.

State education officials have released preliminary Annual Performance Reports (APR) for Missouri school districts. These reports indicate how districts are meeting annual state standards for academic performance.
Casey’s named Chamber Business of the Month

The Adrian Chamber of Commerce’s featured business for September is Casey’s General Store, located at Business 71 Highway and First Street in Adrian. The corporate-owned business is managed by Marsha Terry. Area supervisor Josh Anderson oversees the operation of the Adrian store as well as nine others in this area, from Harrisonville to Drexel and Urich to Butler.

Blackhawks pull it together and defeat Bulldogs 54-0

The Adrian Blackhawks opened the home portion of the 2010 football season hosting WEMO conference rival Appleton City Bulldogs. Adrian put together a complete game dominating the Bulldogs on both sides of the ball from start to finish. When the final seconds ticked off Adrian would leave the field with a 54-0 victory over Appleton City.
Lady Blackhawks softball action
The Lady Blackhawks softball team hosted the Butler Lady Bears on Monday, September 13. Adrian had some strong bats and came away with an 11 to 1 victory. Megan Lewis was the winning pitcher. She went all 5 innings, striking out 5, allowing 3 walks and 4 hits. Coach Hubbard said, “This was a good win for us. The girls played a solid game on offense and defense. We played well together as a team.”
Lady Blackhawks volleyball has four game winning streak
The Adrian Lady Blackhawks traveled to Sherwood Monday, September 13 and defeated the Lady Marksmen in two games. In the first game the Lady Blackhawks took control and won easily 25-8. The second game proved to be a lot closer, but Adrian held on to take a 25-21 win. Coach Huckaby stated, “Wow! The girls played the best I have seen them play yet. They moved as a team, talked as a team and looked like a team. They were calm and made playing volleyball look easy. They were definitely in control of the pace of the game.
Lions make a donation
Proell enlists in Mo. Army National Guard
Sheldon Proell Jr., of Adrian, MO recently enlisted in the Missouri National Guard and will serve with the 138th Infantry Regiment in Kansas City. In October, Proell will report to Fort Jackson, S.C., for his Basic Combat Training. He will later receive training to become a systems communication specialist.
In 2008, Proell graduated from Adrian R-3 High School. He is the son of Kelli Reddell of Adrian and Sheldon Proell Sr. of Shawnee, KS. He is the grandson of Roy and MaryLou Reddell, Adrian.
Ronnie E. Hough 1955 - 2010
Ronnie E. Hough, 54, Adrian, MO went to be with his Savior Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at his home surrounded by loved ones. He was born on November 17, 1955 in Fort Sill, OK. He was the son of ‘Red’ Hough and Shirley Hough. He was united
in marriage on January 24, 1992 to Sherri Dahman. Together they helped raise seven children who have blessed him with seven grandchildren.

Adrian Fire Chief Gary Dizney, with help from the Adrian Fire Department, his family and many others, spent countless hours preparing for a day in American history in which alot of lives were lost needlessly in tragic, cowardly attacks on United States soil. US citizens will never forget the people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
Bloodmobile collects 45 units of donated blood

Tuesday, September 7, one of the last lazy days of summer, 45 donors showed up to donate blood. All got to donate, so we had 45 good units of blood. Appreciation goes to all for donating and helping out in any way.

Darrin and Melanie (Arndt) Young of Columbia, MO are proud to announce the birth of twin daughters on Friday, August 27th, 2010. Kathlynn Trece (Katy) weighed 4lbs. 5 ozs., and was 17 inches long. Mary Sue (Masy) weighed 5 lbs. 5 ozs., 18 inches long.

Donates hair to Locks of Love

Sarah Doubledee, 14, of Archie, recently gave a part of herself to help someone else. Saturday, August 28, the teen, along with her aunt and mother, visited a beauty shop in Kansas City, Missouri for Sarah’s very first time. There, she also participated in another first, she had her hair cut and donated over 14 inches of hair to the Locks of Love organization. “I wanted to do this, because a little girl had cancer and she didn’t have any hair,” Sarah explained.
Saathoff family reunion
Thursday, August 5 the Saathoff's went to Escondido, California for a family reunion where they enjoyed great food and time visiting with family. They visited the ocean, San Diego Zoo, San Diego Old Town vineyards, Legoland, Hollywood and The Price Is Right. They didn’t get on the show but watch for them in the audience with their neon green shirts. Lady Blackhawks softball falls to Notre Dame DeSion
The Adrian Lady Blackhawks softball team traveled to Notre Dame DeSion Tuesday, September 7. Although the Lady Blackhawks scored 11 runs, they were defeated 13 to 11. Adrian had balanced scoring as they scored 4 in the first inning, 2 in the third, 4 in the fourth and 1 in the sixth. DeSion was held scoreless the first two innings, but came back and scored 5 in the third. Again the Lady Blackhawks held them for two more innings until DeSion’s bats came alive in the sixth and they scored 8 runs to take the victory.
Blackhawks escape with 21-13 victory over Drexel Bobcats
The Adrian Blackhawks took on the Drexel Bobcats last Friday night in their third consecutive road game to open the season. And, for the second straight week, were able to walk away from the game on the fortunate side of a 21-13 score.
All signs pointed to Adrian hanging up a lopsided final score. But, that was before Drexel had their first possession of the game. The Bobcats would enter halftime with a lead against an Adrian team that looked uninspired and unmotivated to win.

Roy Allen Mickelberry of Urich, Missouri was born January 6, 1934 at the home near Ballard, Missouri, the son of Chester and Ella Marie Mickelberry. He departed this life on August 24, 2010 at Harrisonville, Missouri at the age of 76 years 6 months and 28 days.

Homecoming 2010 - A Night At The Oscars
It’s time once again to show that Blackhawk Pride with Homecoming festivities! The theme this year is “A Night at the Oscars” and will take place September 20-24.
R-3 students audition for All District Choir
All District Choir auditions were held Saturday, September 11 at Odessa High School. The following students auditioned: Rebecca Thompson, Tarissa Keating, Brittany Darby, Bethany Ward, Crystal Lentz, Alexis LaBat.
The selected Adrian students to the 2010 All District Women’s Honor Choir are: Tarissa Keating, Crystal Lentz and Bethany Ward. Alexis LaBat is the only student from Adrian selected for the All District Mixed Choir. These four students will rehearse and perform on October 9 at Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia at 5:00 p.m.
Blackhawks score 21-13 overtime victory over Archie Whirlwinds

Adrian’s tradition of week 2 wake-up calls continued this past Friday as the Blackhawks traveled to Archie in the opening game of WEMO conference action. Adrian would end up victorious with a 21-13 win over the Whirlwinds. The final outcome is far better than the punch in the mouth administered by the Whirlwinds in the first half. The Whirlwinds would convert one of two extra points and lead 13-0 at halftime.
Lady Blackhawks host double dual
The Adrian Lady Blackhawks hosted a double dual on Thursday, September 2. Teams participating were Adrian, Drexel and Miami.
In the first game the Lady Blackhawks defeated Miami 25-6, 25-19. Coach Huckaby commented, “We played as a team. It was really fun to watch. They looked like they had fun out there. I’m very proud of them.”
Construction begins
Ground breaking for the BCMH clinic in Adrian began Tuesday, September 7. Smith Construction, Butler, is the general contractor for the project. Clifford Smith, owner, said: “We are looking forward to working with Bates County Memorial Hospital to provide a state-of-the-art facility for Adrian and Bates County residents. I am proud to be a part of the continuing progression of the City of Adrian.” He added, “The project completion date is December 2010, allowing the Clinic to provide the needs of residents with local healthcare.”
The community helps Adrian firefighters reach Boot Block goal
Adrian Fire Chief Gary Dizney said the fire crew reached the goal they set for the annual MDA Boot Block. This year, the Firefighters Boot Block donations were close to last year and totaled $3290.
Chief Dizney said all money raised stays in the Kansas City area and is used locally to help with MDA research and to aide patients in the area. The funds are also used to help send MDA patients to a special camp in Linwood, KS.
Adrian Food Pantry closes its doors
The Adrian Ministerial Alliance announced late last week, that effective immediately, the Adrian Food Pantry has closed its doors. The reason given is that the food pantry is no longer serving the 50 minimum clients as required for participation through Harvesters. “Many of the local people being served by the food pantry are picking up their government commodities in Butler, and while there, they are accessing the Butler Food Pantry,” said Ministerial Alliance spokesman Paul Burhart. He is the pastor of the Adrian Christian Church.

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Adrian Tuesday, September 7 from 1:00pm - 6:00pm at the Optimist Building. All donations of blood help patients in need. We cannot wait until the need arises to donate blood. All blood goes through 48 hours of testing before going on for transfusions. All this makes it important that we try to meet our goal of 50 units of blood to make sure blood is available when the need arises.
On the hunt...Beta Sigma Phi helps Bates County Food Pantry
Beta Sigma Phi members kicked off the 2010 - 2011 sorority year with a door-to-door scavenger hunt for non-perishable items to be donated to the Bates County Food Pantry. Many Adrian residents donated items for the food pantry. Longtime Beta Sigma Phi member Karen Edmiston said, “Aren’t we fortunate to live in such a generous community!”
New Pastor at Adrian First Baptist Church

“What’s most rewarding is just really the experience of seeing different people’s lives…part in town, part in the country and seeing how God works in people who have different backgrounds and cultures,” said Mike Bergman.
Mike is the new Pastor for the Adrian First Baptist Church, located on Main Street. He arrived in Adrian a few days before his first Sunday, on August 22. He is originally from Sedalia, Missouri, where he was last pastor of a church. He has been in the ministry for about six years.
Blackhawks score 41-6 season opener victory

The Adrian Blackhawks traveled to El Dorado Springs to take on the host Bulldogs in their opening game of the 2010 football season Friday, August 27th. They entered the game with questions about how their offensive skill positions would perform. They would leave the field on the good side of a 41-6 thumping in a game many expected to be close. With that lopsided victory they put to rest any doubts people may have had about how their offense would perform.
Lady Blackhawks post 9-5 win over Leeton Lady Bulldogs
The Adrian Lady Blackhawks softball team hosted Leeton Tuesday, August 24. Kaley Keating was the winning pitcher as they defeated their opponent 9 to 5. Coach Hubbard said, “The girls did a much better job of playing defense. They hit the ball well too. We had 4 extra base hits which meant we also hit the ball hard. It was a good outing for the whole team. Our JV also won 6-4, pounding out 6 hits in 7 innings. Ashley Riley had 2 hits to lead the Lady Blackhawks in the JV contest.”

Edward Eugene Newport 1947 - 2010
Edward Eugene “Wilson” Newport, 62 of Adrian, MO passed away at his home on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 surrounded by his family and close friends. Edward was born November 29, 1947 in Nevada, MO, the son of Charles Wilson, Nadine Harris and Chester Newport.
