Ready to go back to school?
It’s that time of year again and Adrian R-III is getting ready for the 2010 - 2011 school year! Athletes in need of a sports physical can go to the school library on August 5 at 6:30pm. Physicals are free. The Adrian tradition of a midnight practice for the football and volleyball teams continues on August 9 at 12:01am.
Back To School Schedule:
*High School students may pick up schedules on August 9 and 10 from 8:00am - 3:00pm in the high school office.
*6th, 7th, and 8th Grades: Back To School student/parent orientation will be August 12 at 6:30pm in the commons area.
Adrian Community Chest supports local organization
The Adrian Community Chest Board met last Tuesday, July 20. They unanimously agreed to make a $500 contribution to the Adrian Community Library. Pictured is Alan Marr, President of the Adrian Community Chest, presenting a $500 check to Adrian Community Library Board Member Steve Hubbard. Alan said, “We are glad to be a service to the Adrian Community Library.”
Civil War era revisited
Bill Thurman of Archie and a newly formed Civil War re-enactors group (Bledsoe’s Battery) began learning the procedures to shoot an 1857, 12-pound full scale replica of a Napoleon Cannon used in the Civil War. Pictured, each member present learned the five positions in firing the cannon. At the end of the training session, a live shot echoed through Frontier Village and Adrian.
The cannon weighs close to 3,000 lbs and takes approximately one pound of black powder per shot. The price of black powder today costs approximately $15.00 per shot.
A new date for Movie in the Park
Because of the rain last weekend, the Movie in the Park has been re-scheduled for Saturday, August 7. The location will be announced in next week’s Adrian Journal. The movie is a western starring the big guy himself, John Wayne. This will be a fun evening for young and old alike.
A concession is still planned and we hope to have help with parking. Please remember, no alcohol is allowed and help us keep the area clean by removing any trash you may have.
We hope to see you there on Saturday, August 7 and that you have a very enjoyable experience. Parking will start at 8:00 p.m.
Lions Club sponsors Adrian teen
Adrian High School sophomore Jordan Loughridge is a National American Miss Junior Teen State Finalist. The finals take place in St. Louis, Missouri this weekend. Jordan will be competing for the State Title in three areas: personal introduction, interview and formal wear. She is also competing in option areas that include: casual wear modeling, spokesmodel and talent. Winners of this pageant will receive college scholarships.

Argus Wilbur “A.W.” Dennis, age 87 of Adrian, Missouri died Tuesday, July 20, 2010 in Adrian. He was born October 4, 1922 to Arthur Wilbur and Ruth Lowry Dennis in Huron, South Dakota. Graveside services were 11 a.m. Friday, July 23, 2010 at Thomas Cemetery in Norwood, Missouri with Gary Schowengerdt officiating.
William Gilkeson “Bill” Griner 1923 - 2010
William Gilkeson “Bill” Griner was born January 26, 1923 near Harrisonville, Missouri the son of William Christopher and Nannie Winona (Gilkeson) Griner. He departed this life on Sunday, July 18, 2010 at his home in Belton surrounded by his family at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 22 days.

Adell Burton, age 89 of Butler, Missouri died Thursday, July 22, 2010 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. She was born October 25, 1920 to Garfield and Rosetta Palmer Cooper in Dunlap, Kansas.
Funeral services were Monday, July 26, 2010 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Pastor Eldon Allen, Rev. Teresa Clyde and Pastor Julie Boyd officiating. Burial in Appleton City Cemetery, Appleton City, Missouri. Contributions to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
Gertrude Edie (Wells) Bolling 1921- 2010
Gertrude Edie (Wells) Bolling, age 89, of Adrian, MO, died July 23, 2010. She was born July 1, 1921 to Elmer and Emma Wells in Geneva, Nebraska. In 1935 they moved to Adrian, MO and she was baptized at the Mt. Olivet Church.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian, MO with pastor Eldon Allen officiating. Interment was in the Adam-Howe Cemetery, Butler, MO. Contributions may be made to the charity of choice.

Civil War re-enactors at Frontier Village this weekend

“We’re not using live fire, just blanks on Saturday,” said Bill Thurman of Archie. “We’re also going to try and set up camp. Most of all though, we’re just going to have fun.” Bill is part of about 10 men who are in a newly formed Civil War re-enactors group. This Saturday at Frontier Village, the guys, Bledsoe’s Battery, will be practicing the shooting of an 1857, 12 pound, full scale replica of a Napoleon cannon.
Area citizens donate units of live-saving blood

Tuesday, July 13 was a very hot, humid day in Adrian. However, 46 donors showed up to donate a unit of life saving blood. Forty-one good units of blood were collected with five being deferred for minor reasons. All in all a good day even though we were nine short of our goal. Thanks to all that gave of their time to make it a successful day. Truly hope these and other donors will mark their calendars for Tuesday, September 7, 2010.
Adrian resident takes part in fundraiser walk for MS

Early in June, Adrian resident, Lisa Snyder took part in a 50 mile fundraiser walk for Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The walk took place in Olathe Kansas and the route began at the Indian Trails Middle school. The event took place over a three day period.
Just to participate, walkers had to raise a minimum of $700 through checks and on-line pledges and checks. Lisa said she and every walker participating in the event, each raised over a $1000. The money goes toward trying to find a cure for the disease. That is very important to Lisa, who was diagnosed with MS in 2002.

Entertains residents
Residents, staff, and visitors enjoyed vocalist, Ken McWain, Thursday afternoon, July 15 at Adrian Manor. Ken McWain sang numerous songs including Gospel and Big Band selections. Residents enjoyed singing along with him, as all of the songs were very familiar to each of them. He has sung at the facility during various occasions for the past 15 years.

BCMH Health Fair well attended
In spite of the heat and busyness of lives, well over 600 people attended the 2010 Bates County Memorial Hospital Health Fair held on July 13th & 14th in the Education Center at BCMH. Participants (pictured right) had the opportunity to have free blood test screenings and wellness screenings, carpal tunnel screening and osteoporosis heel screenings. This community service represents a savings to each participant of over $430, totaling approximately $268,000 in laboratory screenings alone.

New protection for R-3 playground
Adrian R-3 is getting new fall protection for the playground. The tire material is being replaced with a new engineered wood safety surface that will have a depth of 12 inches for the entire playground. Helen Maurine McElwain, age 85 of Butler died Saturday, July 17, 2010 at her home in Butler. She was born July 29, 1924 to Herald McKinley and Ethel Floy Robinson Bitner in Butler.

Cletus Edward Schussler, 90 of Butler, passed away July 18, 2010 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. Cletus Edward Schussler was born to Joseph and Mary (Bauning) Schussler on May 30, 1920, in the community of Germantown, MO.
Mass of Christian Burial was held 10 am Wednesday, July 21 at the church with Fr. Justin Hoye as celebrant. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bates County Museum or St. Ludger’s Historic Preservation Fund.

Geneva Maxine Silver, age 84 of Adrian, Missouri died Sunday, July 18, 2010 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Missouri. She was born June 9, 1926 to Arcie Lee and Lena Marie York Hurt in Aaron, Missouri.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 2010 at Adrian First Baptist Church in Adrian, Missouri with Ben Chapman officiating. Burial in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, Missouri. Contributions to Adrian First Baptist Church.
Helen Marie Varns 1923 - 2010
Helen Marie Varns, 86, of Butler, MO, passed away Monday, July 12, 2010 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. Helen was born July 25, 1923 in Wesley, Arkansas to Willis Duncan and Cora Drake.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 16, 10:00 a.m. at the Butler Presbyterian Church, Butler, Missouri. Rev. Dick Pierson officiated. Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Bates County Cancer Society, c/o Atkinson Funeral home, P. O. Box 325, Adrian, MO 64720.

Rumors squelched by the Adrian Mayor and City Council
The July 13 regular meeting of the Adrian City Council was called to order by Mayor Larry Ritter. Aldermen Mike Lemon, Danny Ferguson, Sue Miller and Bob Hess were present. Also present were City Attorney Cindy Warner, City Administrator Lori Williams and City Clerk Melisa Newkirk. More than 50 guests attended the meeting. The meeting room was full, and many were present who stood in the hallway outside of the room.
2010 Bates County Fair underway
The 2010 Bates County Fair is now underway. The theme for this year is “Bates County Doing It Again in 2010”. The parade was held Monday evening. The event then moved out to the fairgrounds for the Bash, the crowning of the Little Miss and Mr. Bates County, and the Farm Bureau Talent Contest. Fair events will continue throughout the week with the Junior Livestock Sale on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. and the Bull Extravaganza and crowning of the queen and princess on Saturday evening.

Participates in National 4-H Shooting
Ryan Jacks of Archie represented Missouri during the National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational in Kerrville, Texas this past week. Ryan was one of four 4-H members who made up the Compound Archery Team. There were 31 states present for the competition. The teams competed in 3-D, Field and FITA events. Ryan’s team placed 2nd overall team with Ryan receiving 7th place overall individual. Out of all 9 disciplines, Missouri won first place overall and came home with the gold!

To celebrate 60th wedding anniversary
Sixty years ago Melvin & Jeweldine Smith were married at the First Baptist Church of Adrian, Missouri on July 23, 1950. They are still members there and attend regularly.
They plan to celebrate their sixtieth anniversary with a trip to Oceanside, California to visit daughter Pamela Sue. Rita Scott, Jeweldine’s sister (who was flower girl at their wedding) will join them in the California trip this July to help them celebrate 60 years of matrimony.

On June 28th, at approximately 10:30 in the morning, units from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office, Miami County EMS, Drexel Fire and Louisburg Fire were dispatched to a one vehicle crash (pictured right) on W. 359th east of Rockville Rd. in rural Miami County, and approximately 1 mile west of Drexel.

The Adrian Community Library recently held two raffles as a fundraiser. The first drawing was for a HP notebook computer and the second drawing involved guessing how many beads were in a glass jar. Books were the prizes for this drawing, one set for younger readers and one for adults. Drew Burris was the winner of the computer and was presented to him at the 4th of July celebration on Saturday. Ashlee Burris was the winner of the books for the younger readers and Patty Hahn won for the adults. Pictured is Ruth Ann Ferguson presenting Drew Burris with the computer.

Donates hair to Locks of Love
Soon to be second grader Abbie Johnson, took time out of her summer play to help those in need. She decided to cut her long hair and make a donation to Locks Of Love. Abbie was nervous, but she is glad that she had 11 inches cut off. “I am proud to get my hair cut and donate it. They will make wigs with my hair,” Abbie said.
