Bit and Spur busy at Ferguson Arena

Over 100 entries in 43 classes enjoyed a beautiful day at Ferguson Arena Sunday, June 27. For the Jackpot classes, the winners were:  Hunter Under Saddle Open:  Laney Shelton, Kate Welker, MiKayla Hammond, Natoshia Minor; Western Pleasure Open: MiKayla Hammond, Laney Shelton, Natoshia Minor, Susie Hess, Lori Williams; Trail Open: Kate Welker, Laney Shelton, MiKayla Hammond, Susie Hess, Linda Poisal; Barrel Open: Trent James, Jordan Knox, Ashlee Smith. On Friday, June 25 the Adrian Bit & Spur Club held an Open 4D barrel race.

Another year, another great crowd...

The 32nd Annual WMAT&MA Steam and Gas Engine Show drew thousands of visitors during the three days of the show, this past weekend. The days were warm but a nice breeze, at least on Saturday, added to the enjoyment of everyone at Frontier Village. There was plenty of things to see, to do, to hear and taste at this year’s show.

Give the Gift of Life - July 13

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Adrian on Tuesday, July 13 from 1-6 p.m. at the Adrian Optimist Building. To maintain an adequate blood supply, all blood types are needed. There is an ongoing need for blood across our country. You only need to feel good the day of donation, weigh at least 110 lbs., be at least 17 years old (16 with completed parental consent form) and have a donor card or some other sort of ID.

Max Motors featured as Adrian Chamber Business of the Month

The Adrian Chamber of Commerce’s featured business for the month of June, is Max Motors, located at the junction of Missouri Highway 52, west and U.S. 71 Highway in Butler. The car dealership is owned by Mark Muller and was named for the oldest of his three sons.

Max Motors has been in business and at that location for five years. During the past few months, Mr. Muller has opened a branch dealership in Nevada, Missouri. Between the two businesses, Max Motors has over 100 employees who cover a variety of areas from sales, office, service, detailing and more.

Residents entertained

The country band, “Jess and The Renner Ford Brothers” entertained residents, staff, and visitors of Adrian Manor Health & Rehabilitation Center during Monday afternoon, June 21.  The band delighted their audience with such country songs as “Bandy The Rodeo Clown” and “Honky Tonk Blues”. Jess Richardson was the lead singer accompanied by The Renner Brothers and The Ford Brothers, who played various instruments. The band members have played together for numerous years and currently perform at local establishments.

Joretta “Jo” Marlene Kendrick, age 76 of Butler, Missouri died Saturday, June 26, 2010 in Butler. She was born December 10, 1933 to Emmett Oliver and Lillie Pearl Robinson Potter in Windsor, Missouri.

Wilma Irene Martens 1922 - 2010

Wilma I. Martens, 87, of Adrian, MO, passed away June 25, 2010 at Cass Regional Medical Center after a short battle of pneumonia with her family at her side. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at the Atkinson Chapel in Adrian, MO, officiated by Rev. Roger McKee, Archie Methodist Church, Archie, MO. Burial was in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, MO. Donations may be made to Special Olympics of Olathe or a quilt and blanket making fund, c/o Atkinson Funeral Home, Adrian.

Elsie Gertrude Stout, age 87 of Adrian, Missouri died Monday, June 21, 2010 in Adrian. She was born August 24, 1922 to Miller Fredrick and Rachel Gertrude Matthews Canida in Knob Noster, Missouri.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Friday, June 25, 2010 at the Victory Assembly of God Church in Adrian, Missouri with Pastor Lance Loughridge officiating. Burial was in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Rich Hill, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Victory Assembly of God Church.

Marvin Dale Dines 1926 - 2010

Marvin Dale Dines, age 84 of Butler, Missouri died Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. He was born January 27, 1926 to Verna McKinley and Elnora Shoop Dines in Johnson City, Missouri.

Maxine Rosa Ritter 1926 - 2010

Maxine Rosa Ritter, 83, of Adrian, MO died Sunday, June 20, 2010 at Adrian Manor in Adrian. Maxine was born June 30, 1926 in Pleasanton, KS, the daughter of Lee and Mary (Voyles) Layland. On June 14, 1942 Maxine married Leonard L. Ritter of Merwin, MO. To this union was born a son, Larry and a daughter, Rose Ann.

Stevens - Griffith

Angela Marie Stevens and Matthew William Griffith are announcing the engagement and upcoming wedding. Angela is the daughter of Suzanne Stevens and the late Judge C. Glenn Stevens of Belleview, IL. Matt is the son of Rex and Jerry Griffith of the Ballard community. He is also the grandson of Jim and Betty Enos of Adrian.

Adrian first and second graders have been “scrapping around town”. In other words, they are visiting 16 different places around the community then making scrapbooks of their visits. On Thursday, June 17, the students toured The Adrian Journal and learned about the newspaper business.

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Adrian, Tuesday, July 13, from 1-6 p.m., at the Optimist Building. During May all blood drives were very low, as was ours, so we are making a plea for donors on this trip. All types are in need, however O’s and A’s are in great need at present.

Area athletes participate in Lions All-Star Basketball games

Area coaches and senior basketball players were selected to play in the 1st Annual Lions District 26-M5 All-Star Basketball Games. The game was held on Saturday, June 12 at The Georgia Robertson Burns Complex on The Missouri Valley College Campus in Marshall, Missouri.

Local participants played for the girls and boys South All-Star teams. Both South teams won. Adrian player Austin Erickson said, “I had a great time at the Lions All-Star Basketball Game. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of guys to play with. The South team won and I’m glad.”

Tournament Champs

The Kougars have participated in three tournaments so far, receiving third in the first two. This weekend’s tournament was a huge success. Last stop for the Kougars is the Branson Shoot Out in July. Elks Fishing Derby

The derby was held at Adrian City Lake on June 12, 2010. Twenty-six kids registered for the derby.  Fish were caught and prizes were awarded for biggest fish, smallest fish, most fish 1st and 2nd place prizes were donated by Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shop and Butler Walmart. Fun, fishing and lunch was enjoyed by all.

Mildred Lucille Lacy Beck, 96, of Moberly, Missouri, passed away Saturday, June 12, 2010 at the Moberly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Moberly, Missouri.

Funeral services were Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the Doss Funeral Home in Edina, Missouri. Burial was in the Mt. Salem Cemetery, southeast of Novelty, Missouri.

Roberta Marym Schultz, age 98 of Kansas City, Missouri formerly of Butler, Missouri and Hume, Missouri died Friday, June 18, 2010 in Kansas City. She was born January 14, 1912 to William Bartholomew and Ethel Gertrude Sabin Ruby in Kansas City, Kansas.

Sharon A. (Broshears) Grimsley 1959 - 2010

Sharon A. (Broshears) Grimsley was born at Fort Campbell, KY on March 28, 1959 and passed away June 17, 2010 at Kansas City Hospice House.

Memorials are suggested to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, an organization to which Sharon and family are actively involved. Services were held Saturday, June 19, 2010 at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home - Olathe Chapel, 14275 Black Bob Rd, Olathe, KS.

Jerry Dennis Oldham, 58, of Belton, Missouri passed away June 19, 2010. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Junior and Dorothy Oldham, of Adrian MO.

Visitation was held Wednesday, June 23rd at Cullen Funeral Home in Raymore, Missouri from 5 to 7 p.m. with private family internment.

Relay for Life takes strides toward a cure

On a picture-perfect day, 12 teams walked to help raise funds for cancer research at the Bates County 13th Annual Relay for Life. The relay began with a ceremonial walk by cancer survivors. People joined in contests, raffles, an auction and a little bit of everything to help the cause.

June 20 to June 26 is Summer Safety and Lightning Awareness Week, set-up to help everyone have a fun and safe time. As everyone prepares for vacations or stay-cations, and all the related activities of summer time fun, do not forget to pack with common sense along with the sun-blockers and water bottles.

R-III students receive top honors

Some of the students who took the ACT in February scored high and received top honors.  Three  7th grade students from Adrian R-III attended a ceremony put on by Duke Talent Search that was held at Drury University in Springfield, MO on Friday, May 21, 2010.  Students had to score in at least one area in order to get invited to the ceremony and their ACT scores had to be at or above a 21 in Reading, 20 in English, 20 in Math and 21 in Science.

Most everybody went to the rodeo but Bit & Spur Club still had a good time Friday night.  In the Open 4D Barrels: 1D - Mitzi Pearce, 2D - Susie Bridges, 3D - Amanda Lewis, there was no 4D winner.  In the Youth 3D Barrels: 1D - Jordan Knox, 2D - Ashlee Smith, 3D Tori Adams.  Quite a fluke occurred in the Peewee barrels, we ended up with a tie between Alyssa, Emma, Shelly, and Tanner.  Winner of the 50-50 was Ashlee Smith. Bates County Museum hosts R-III summer school students

The Bates County Museum was very pleased to host the Adrian R-III summer school students on Friday, June 4th. The group of 85 students, teachers, and parents were entertained and educated thanks to the dedication of several history-loving volunteers. Six Stations of Learning included Life in a One-Room School, Pioneer Life, Osage Indians, Civil War (Battle of Island Mound & Order No. 11), Wood Carving, Felted Bead Making, and a Museum Tour.

Carl Eugene “Coxie” McCaughey was born October 17, 1940 in Payette, Idaho the son of Oma Jundy and Carl-Wayne McCaughey. He died Saturday, June 12, 2010 in Poteau, Oklahoma. WMAT&MA Steam and Gas Engine Show in two weeks

The 32nd Annual Western Missouri Antique Tractor and Machinery Association’s Steam and Gas Engine Show is coming up at the end of this month. The show dates are Friday through Sunday, June 25-27. This year, the featured tractor is the John Deere line which had its start nearly 175 years ago. Also featured this year is the Maytag line of small engines, vintage appliances and other fine Maytag products.

Walking for a cause: Miles for Meals

On Sunday, June 6, walkers of all ages helped pick up trash around Adrian. Participants obtained Walkathon sponsors to raise funds for the Miles for Meals program. The Wild Sage Art Exhibit

Rusty’s Peculiar Chiropractic, in association with Miss Marie’s Herbal Teas and Native Touch Massage, hosted a fundraising benefit for the Adrian Community Library last Saturday. On sale at The Wild Sage Art Exhibit were beautiful pieces of artwork designed by the Julie Womelduff and Family and members of the Adrian community. In addition to the fine artwork on display, people were offered sample teas and free chair massages.

Dr. James (Rusty) Womelduff said that he plans to make this an annual fundraiser for the Adrian Community Library.

New Adrian business to hold Open House

One of Adrian’s newest businesses will be holding an Open House, this coming Saturday, June 12. The business, Miss Marie’s Spiritual Scents, is located on the north side of the business district, at 40 East Main Street.

Kellie Case presents Dale Bishop, owner of Computers 4 U, with a one-of-a-kind watering container designed by a student in Ms. Young’s 2nd grade class.  These elaborate milk jugs are given to all the businesses on Main Street in Adrian to water the flowers planted by the Adrian Garden Club and the Adrian Lions Club in the planters that are lovingly referred to as “Pete’s Pots”.

Adrian Elks Lodge 2864 held a benefit cookout for the Adrian Community Library after damage was sustained to their building. Pictured above is Bill Page (trustee) presenting proceeds from the cookout to Jeannette Emerson, Library Board Member. To play in Lions All-Star Game

Austin Erickson (right) and Keenan Morrow (far right), graduating seniors from Adrian R-III High School, will be among the 48 players selected to play in the 1st Annual Lions District 26-M5 All-Star Basketball Games. The games will be held Saturday, June 12, starting at 6:00 p.m. in Missouri Valley College Volney Ashford Gymnasium in Marshall, Mo.

The North is the Purple squad which will be coached by Jim Stoner of Higginsville and Oak Grove’s Jerry Girdner. The Gold, or South team, are coached by LaMonte’s Rod Baxter and Adrian’s James Wheeler.

Elks plant garden

Adrian Elks lodge members planted a garden for the use of Adrian senior citizens. The garden is located at Houston Plaza. The garden was planted with tomatoes, green beans, potatoes, sweet corn, and other vegetables. The tomato plants were donated by Michael G’s Greenhouses. Many hours of work has been donated by the volunteers, especially Roy Boyles. Services were held Friday, June 4, 2010, 11:00 a.m. at the Creighton First Baptist Church, Creighton, MO. Pastor Vernon West officiated. Interment was in the Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, MO. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Franklin LeRoy Gunn, age 74 of Butler, Missouri died Saturday, May 29, 2010 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. He was born October 22, 1935 to Cecil Otto and Alpha Lorene Warren Gunn in Kansas City, Kansas.

Memorial services were Friday, June 4, 2010 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Dr. Terry Davis officiating. Contributions to Heartland Hospice.

Zola Fern Duncan 1919 - 2010

Zola Fern Duncan, 91, Butler, MO, passed away Monday, May 31, 2010 at the Lake of the Ozarks under hospice care, in the home of her daughter, Lee Terry. Zola was born April 15, 1919 in Austin, MO the daughter of Charles Edward and Katherine Lou (Schraw) Harper.

Services were held Thursday, June 3, 2010, 11:00 a.m. at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, Missouri. Jim Arnold, Archie, Missouri officiated. Interment was in Freeman Cemetery, Freeman, Missouri. Contributions may be made to the Heartland Hospice of Butler.

~ Hundreds pay tribute to America’s fallen soldiers ~

A bright day full of sunshine was the perfect start of what would become one of the most moving events in recent Adrian history. Last Saturday, the Adrian VFW Post #1935 held its annual Memorial Day Service to pay tribute to the men and women who have served or are serving in the United States military. This year, however, a team of four Adrian men and many volunteers made a Veterans Memorial Dedication a reality.

An unsafe Main Street building comes down

The Bates County Memorial Hospital (BCMH) determined that the Adrian Family Care Clinic building is structurally unsound. As a result, the entire clinic was demolished last week.

The BCMH Board of Directors has decided to re-build the medical clinic in a location to be determined. Their goal is to have the clinic construction completed before cold weather. The re-building of the medical clinic demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to meeting the healthcare needs of our community.

Dr. Richard and Glenna Moe of Lee’s Summit, Missouri announce the engagement of their daughter, Dr. Tabitha Moe, to Dr. Joseph Brewster, son of James and Karla Brewster of Butler, Missouri. Dr. Brewster plans to continue to practice medicine with Bates County Memorial Hospital. Dr. Moe plans to continue to practice medicine in Kansas City. The couple plan to wed in a beach ceremony on Captiva Island, Florida in June.

25th Wedding Anniversary

Chara and Derek Jensen, and Braden, 17 months, Marshfield, MO, announce the birth of their son, Brock Anthony. He was born May 13, 2010, 11:53 a.m. at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, MO. He weighed 7 lbs. 13 ozs. and was 20 1/2 inches long.

Annual Miles for Meals

As this event approaches this Sunday, June 6 (2-4 p.m.), we want to give thanks to the many faithful volunteers who serve each day. The meal program is grateful to the 9 week rotation of drivers who are most valuable for the success of this program delivery as there have been 2,865 meals delivered to Adrian in the past year. The volunteer hours totaled 1,536.
