Area students compete in Invitational Spelling Bee

The Adrian R-III Invitational Spelling Bee took place on Saturday, February 13, 2010. Schools from Adrian, Archie and Miami competed. The overall champion was Tyler Hicks, Miami and the overall runner-up was Allison Hackleman, Archie. The primary champion was Paige Parks, Adrian and runner-up was Aminia Scaletty, Adrian.

Water line replacement begins in Adrian

The City of Adrian has been committed to replacing water lines since 2001. Details have been explored and mapped, but funding kept the project from seeing completion. Thanks to 100% financing (50% loan, 50% grant) through the American Recovery and Re-Investment Act signed by President Obama on February 17, 2009, Akins Excavating (East Lynne, MO) was issued a notice to proceed with water line replacement. Pictured above on Tuesday, February 16, Akins Excavating began replacing the lines at First and Kentucky Streets.

State Championships or bust!

Luke Hough, Brandt McMillan, Tyler Proell, Bobby McCarl, Tom Gregg and Tuff Wimberly are headed to the State Wrestling Championships on Wednesday morning with Head Coach Ryan Campbell. Coach Campbell said, “These guys came out really well in Districts and I look for them to finish high this weekend. At Districts all of them had mentally prepared themselves and had a look of determination to win. You could see it in their faces. They are ready to do the same at State.”

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Adrian Tuesday, March 9 from 1:00pm - 6:00pm at the Optimist Building.

Residents of Adrian Manor Health & Rehabilitation Center observed a Cake Decorating Demonstration provided by Dina Fredrickson (far right). Dina visited the facility Wednesday afternoon, February 10, and demonstrated her skill. Dina has numerous years of experience in Food Service. Joey and Ashley Patterson announce the birth of their son, Samuel Allen Patterson on February 5, 2010 at 11:00 p.m. He weighed 7 lbs. 13 ozs. and was 19 1/2 inches long.

Optimists recognize January Students of the Month

The Adrian R-3, Ballard R-2 and Miami R-1 School Districts have been working in conjunction with the Adrian Optimist Club to honor a Student of the Month from each school. The students are selected by staff members on the following criteria: character, attendance, attitude toward others and school, behavior, leadership, and improvement in, or good grades. Students of the Month each receive a certificate of recognition and $20.00 in Adrian Chamber of Commerce “Chamber Bucks.”

Six Blackhawk Wrestlers headed to State

The Adrian wrestling team finished fifth in Districts at Blair Oaks last weekend with a score of 102, just one point behind fourth place. The Blackhawks finished strong, and six wrestlers are headed to the State Championships in Columbia. Congratulations to Luke Hough, Brandt McMillan, Tyler Proell, Bobby McCarl, Tom Gregg and Tuff Wimberly.

Lady Blackhawks take first in Cass-Midway tournament

Olivia Case scored a game high 12 points, hitting 3 of 7 from the field as Adrian defeated Barstow 52-31 at the Midway tournament Thursday night. Brenna Tallman and Emily Hughes each scored 11 points. “We played an outstanding defensive game. We were patient with the ball on offense and had a pretty good night” commented Coach Dingman.

Blackhawks suffer first loss of season

The Adrian Blackhawks drew the number 1 seed in the 24th annual Cass-Midway Tournament held February 8-13. In first round action on Tuesday night the Blackhawks drew the number 8 seed Blue Ridge Christian Warriors. This proved to be no contest as Adrian easily won 68 to 19. The highlight of the game was Austin Erickson scoring his 1,000th point. Coach Wheeler commented on the game, “We played well as a team and got a lot of guys into the game. The bench got some good minutes. Congratulations to Austin Erickson on scoring his 1000th point.”

Erickson scores 1000th point

The Adrian Blackhawks varsity basketball team rolled over the Blue Ridge Christian Warriors in the 24th annual Midway Basketball Tournament last Tuesday evening by the score of 68-19.  But the real news in this game was Austin Erickson scoring his 1000th point in the first half of play.

Sarah Eva McDaniel 1922 - 2010

Sarah Eva McDaniel, age 87 of Butler, Missouri died Monday, February 15, 2010 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. She was born October 27, 1922 to Herbert Lee and Dicie May Chitwood Snell in Bates County, Missouri.

Funeral services were 10 a.m. Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Pastor John Prichard officiating. Burial, Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri. Contributions, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries.

Ruth M. Neal 1921 - 2010

Ruth M. Neal, 88 of Drexel, passed away Friday, February 19, 2010 at Adrian Manor in Adrian, Mo. Ruth was born March 16, 1921 to Ray and Lizzie (Elizabeth Lacy) Majors. She married Rex Dakin Neal on May 17, 1939.

Cremation, with visitation Friday, February 26, from 5:30-8:30pm at Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel, (816) 657-4400. A memorial service will be at 10:30am Saturday at the funeral home, with inurnment to follow in Sharon Cemetery, Drexel. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Merwin Christian Church or Adrian Manor, which may be left in care of the funeral home.

William “Bill” Clardy 1914 - 2010

William “Bill” Wayne Clardy, age 95 of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at Medicalodge Nursing Center in Butler. He was born August 27, 1914 to James Monroe and Effie May Patterson Clardy in Roscoe, Missouri.

Graveside services were 12 noon Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler, Missouri with Pastor Ron Dunlap officiating. Contributions may be made to the Heartland Hospice or Butler Public Library.

Harley A. Ford 1920 - 2010

Harley A. Ford, 89, of Adrian, MO, died Sunday, February 7, 2010 at the Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville, MO. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 13, 2010 at the Atkinson Chapel in Adrian, MO, officiated by Rev. Paul Burhart, Adrian Christian Church.

Connie L. Moore 1928 - 2010

Connie L. Moore, 81, died in Corinth, Mississippi on February 10, 2010 from ovarian cancer. Born November 19, 1928 in Orient, South Dakota, to Ed and Connie Johnson, Connie attended Commerce and Benton schools in Missouri and graduated from Benton High School in 1946.

Services were held at the Baptist Church in Commerce, Missouri on Monday, February 15 with Dr. Eric D. Moore officiating. Burial will be at Commerce at a later date. Memorial contributions are welcome at Crosswind Ministry, 703 Tate St. in Corinth, Mississippi, 38834.

Author speaks to Adrian R-III students

Author Richard W. Jennings from Overland Park, Kansas spoke to Adrian students in grades four through eight on Wednesday, February 3. After his presentation, Mr. Jennings signed numerous autographs for students and teachers. He also gave away several of his books. Adrian R-III Librarian Karen Cochran said, “I hope the students enjoyed the presentation and look forward to hearing more authors and illustrators speak in the future.”

Meet the new Postmaster at the Adrian Post Office

A little over a month into the job, new Adrian Postmaster David (Dave) Weber is doing what he likes best in his work, - getting to meet people. “I really like the people I get to meet,” he said. “ Everyone, from the customers to the employees. I enjoy the whole gamut of people I meet each day.”

Lady Blackhawks fall to Archie; Win first round in Midway tournament

The Adrian Lady Blackhawks hosted the Archie Lady Whirlwinds on Tuesday, February 2. Adrian struggled with their shots as they quickly found themselves down 15 to 4 in the first quarter. To start the second half Adrian came out fired up and battled their way back, outscoring Archie 28 to 21, but still fell short by one point, 45 to 46.

Coach Dingman said, “Our bench stepped up for us. We just could not overcome being down by 11 points after the first quarter.” The loss put the Lady Blackhawks’ overall record at 11 and 5 and they fell to 0 and 2 in the conference.

Blackhawks take victory from Archie Whirlwinds

The Adrian Blackhawks hosted the Archie Whirlwinds last Tuesday night in conference play. If Adrian could pull away with a win they would have a very good chance at the WEMO Conference title.

The Blackhawks jumped out early and took a very convincing lead after the first quarter. Shooting 66% from the floor, Adrian was able to put up a 64-45 victory. The win moved the Blackhawks overall record to 16-0. They are 2-0 in conference play. Adrian is participating in the Midway Tournament this week.

Herbert “Herb” A. Craig Sr.

Herbert “Herb” A. Craig, Sr., 74, of Sahuarita, AZ entered into the arms of the Lord on Feb. 5, 2010. He was born Oct. 4, 1935, on the family farm in Adrian, MO. to Herbert R. Craig and Hazel M. Nelson, the second of three sons.

Shirley Ann Miller 1939 - 2010

Shirley Ann Miller passed away February 2, 2010 at the age of 70 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Shirley was the daughter of Charles Thomas Harrelson and Edna Temple Harrelson born June 19, 1939 at Clinton, Missouri.

Funeral services were 11 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2010 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler with Rev. Art Ellsworth officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Contributions may be made to the Ohio Street United Methodist Church Youth or Heartland Hospice.

Adrian Elementary students participate in Haiti relief effort

Adrian Elementary joined the Missouri Department of Education in a relief effort for children in Haiti.  “Kits for Kids” is a statewide project for Missouri school children in which Adrian students and staff assembled hygiene kits for children in Haiti. Brian Borgmeyer, Elementary Principal, learned of this project just one week before the kits had to be turned in.

Adrian 7th graders honored for academic excellence

Two 7th grade students from Adrian R-III were invited to participate in the Duke Talent Search. Collin Brewster (left) and Conrad Walley (right) are among the 67,000 academically talented 7th graders who took the SAT or ACT through the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) in late 2009 and early 2010. To be considered for Duke TIP, students must score in the 95th percentile or above on a grade-level achievement test.

Blackhawks win 80th Annual Archie Tournament

The Adrian Blackhawks participated in the 80th Annual Archie Tournament last week. The Blackhawks were the number 1 seed and went up against Heartland on Monday, January 25. They had no trouble and won the contest 69 to 25. Adrian had a total of 19 steals and only 9 turnovers in the game. They were 14 of 19 from the free throw line and shot 45% from the floor. Coach Wheeler said, “We did a much better job on defense. Eric Moles did a nice job rebounding. I was also pleased with our assist to turnover ratio.”

Lady Blackhawks place third in Archie Tournament

The Adrian Lady Blackhawks drew the number one seed in the 80th Annual Archie Tournament held last week. In the first round game they played Heartland and easily won the contest 63 to 18. The girls were 27 of 63 for 43% from the field and shot 6 of 14 from the free throw line. They grabbed 18 steals and only committed 6 turnovers.

The Adrian Varsity Wrestlers easily defeated the O’Hara Celtics on Monday, January 25 with a final score of 54 to 18.

The Adrian Varsity Wrestling Team made Blackhawk history with a 70-0 shutout over the Lone Jack Mules on senior night last Thursday. Seniors Tuff Wimberly, Tom Gregg, Tyler Proell and Chadd Goforth were honored. Also recognized were the Adrian youth wrestlers, who wrestled four exibition matches before the dual. Seniors were recognized with a wrestling statue and other gifts. Seniors are Tuff Wimberly, Tom Gregg, Chadd Goforth, and Tyler Proell.

Final slate of candidates complete for April elections

The final list of candidates for the April 6, 2010 election was completed Tuesday January 19, 2010 at the end of business hours. Several more people have signed up for various offices, including the two open seats on the Bates County Hospital Board. The candidates and offices for which they have filed are as follows:

Athletes achieve Academic All-State Football honors

The Academic All-State football honors came out last week. Adrian had four players make it (above, left to right): Erik White, senior; Drew Cochran, sophomore; J.R. Lawrence, sophomore; and Tuff Wimberly, senior.

To be eligible a player has to accomplish two of the following three criteria: be in the top 10% of their class, score a 25 or higher on their ACT or have a GPA of 3.5 or better. A player also had to be either a sophomore, junior, or senior, and has to start at least 70% of the season’s games.

Watts Construction and Storage named Chamber Business of the Month

The Adrian Chamber of Commerce’s featured business for January 2010 is Watts Construction and Storage. The construction side of the business is owned by Tim Watts and his son, Jacob Watts. The storage side, is owned by Tim and his wife, Pam.

Watts Construction was started in the late 1960’s, about 1969, by Tim’s father, Delbert Watts. Delbert ran the business until the late 1980’s when he fell off a roof in Adrian and broke his back. Tim then took over the business in 1989 and had been running it ever since.

They enjoyed gathering with fellow residents for celebration of their birthdays. Birthday cake, ice cream, and punch were served. Adrian Rebekah Lodge hosts joint Installation of Officers

Adrian Rebekah Lodge #449 hosted a joint Installation of Officers with Carnation Rebekah Lodge #238-Butler on Monday, December 7, 2009 under the direction of Lorraine Kershner-District Deputy President and her Installing Staff. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat for the Lady Blackhawks

The Adrian Lady Blackhawks moved their overall record to 9 and 1 as they hosted Lakeland Tuesday night, January 19, in non-conference action. Adrian easily won the contest by the score of 66 to 20.

On Thursday, January 21 the Lady Blackhawks traveled to Hume for non-conference action. Adrian fell to the Lady Hornet 52 to 55. After the first half of play, Adrian only held a one point, 25-24 lead. During the second half Adrian fell behind by six in the third and then outscored the Lady Hornets 16 to 13 in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the third quarter deficit.

Blackhawks keep up hot streak

The Adrian Blackhawks began a busy week on Tuesday, January 19 as they hosted the Lakeland Vikings. Adrian had little trouble as they defeated the Vikings 66 to 49. Keenan Morrow led the scoring attack with 20 points. He was 8 of 12 from the free throw line and 5 of 8 from the floor, with two of the five being 3 pointers.

Adrian Youth Wrestling Club holds tournament

The Adrian Youth Wrestling Club hosted a tournament last Saturday in Adrian. Over 300 kids participated from Belton, Carthage, Clinton, Diamond, El Dorado Springs, Grandview, Harrisonville, Holden, Lee’s Summit, Nevada, Raymore-Peculiar and Seneca.

This impressive tournament is the Club’s main fundraiser. With the proceeds they will purchase new singlets for the wrestlers next year.

Adrian Bit and Spur staying busy this Winter

It’s been a dreary winter, but Adrian Bit & Spur Club members have stayed busy with their horses. The Cumpton brothers (pictured), steadily brought home ribbons and trophies. They went from the county fair, on to state fair, to the Unbelievable Horse Happening at the American Royal with APHA shows in between.  

Everyone is anxious for spring to finally arrive and the club will start planning for this year’s events February 4, 7:00 p.m. at Wimfield’s on Main.

Edna Louise Davis 1923 - 2010

Edna Louise Davis, age 86 of Holton, Kansas formerly of Butler, Missouri died Sunday, January 31, 2010 at Holton Hospital in Holton, Kansas. She was born June 29, 1923 to Charles Monroe and Edna Weir Lukenbill in Taberville, Missouri.

Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler, Missouri with Elder Holly Rabourn officiating.Contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Frankie Jean “Jeanie” Stephens 1922 - 2010

Frankie Jean “Jeanie” Stephens, age 87 of Butler, Missouri died Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. She was born September 7, 1922 to Roy Dode and Jeanetta Fay Harper Holland in Butler.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dick Pierson officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri Contributions may be made to the Butler First Presbyterian Church or American Cancer Society.

Marvin F. Rice 1926 – 2010

Marvin F. Rice, age 83, of Butler, MO passed away Thursday, January 28, 2010 at the Kansas City Hospice House of kidney failure. Marvin is now, happily, in the arms of the Lord and his beloved wife, Dulcie.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at the Atkinson Chapel in Adrian, MO. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145.

Viola Pearl Ferguson 1925 - 2010

Viola Pearl Ferguson passed away on January 24, 2010, at St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City. She was born on June 4, 1925, to Bernie C. and Lelia P. (Gregory) Jackson near Amsterdam, Missouri. She grew up working on the family farm and graduated from Amsterdam High School at age 16 as salutatorian.

Funeral services were 11 a.m. Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Rev. Art Ellsworth officiating. Interment in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri. Contributions may be made to the Ohio Street United Methodist Church.
