Merritt Clinton (Doc) Irwin, age 99 of Hume, Missouri died Monday, January 11, 2010 at Nevada Regional Medical Center in Nevada. He was born June 13, 1910 to William and Berlie Maria Hanon Irwin in Vernon County, Missouri.
Cremation memorial services were held 2 p.m. Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the Hume Unitd Methodist Church in Hume, Missouri with Larry Berry and Pastor Don Rice officiating. Inurnment to follow at later date.
Mary Louise Herrick-Keith 1944 - 2010
Mary Louise Herrick-Keith, age 65 of Kansas City, Missouri died Sunday, January 10, 2010 at Center Point Hospital in Independence, Missouri. She was born April 7, 1944 to Max Bernard and Mary Elizabeth Loehr Herrick in Topeka, Kansas.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Friday, January 15, 2010 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Rev. Bob Maffit officiating. Burial in Myers Cemetery, Appleton City, Missouri. Contributions to BCMH Auxiliary Scholarship Fund.
Benjamin W. Gunter August 16, 2009 to January 18, 2010
Benjamin W. Gunter, age 5 months, of Warrensburg, Missouri, infant son of David and Sarah (Meade) Gunter, passed away Monday, January 18, 2010 at Western Missouri Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 23, 2010, 2:00 p.m. at Sweeney-Phillips & Holden Funeral Home in Warrensburg. Mr. Paul Jones officiated. Cremation followed the service.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Benjamin W. Gunter Memorial Fund payable to David and Sarah Gunter and may be left at the funeral home.
2010 Courtwarming Royalty
Senior Tuff Wimberly and Junior Cara Stark were crowned last Friday as the 2010 Adrian High School Courtwarming King and Queen. Tuff is the son of Shane and Amy Wimberly. Cara is the daughter of Darrin and Tammy Stark.
Presenting the crowns were senior basketball captains Keenan Morrow and Olivia Case. Crown carrier was Drew Burris and flower girl was Jocelyn Reynolds.

Awards Chamber of Commerce Bucks
The Chamber of Commerce held a “$1,000 Chamber Bucks Drawing”. The community was eligible to enter for a chance to win. Two $500 Chamber Bucks were drawn. Yoss Thriftway now offers handcrafted Henning’s Cheeses
Yoss Thriftway has resurrected a blast from the store’s past. As the Adrian Journal goes to press, a 1,065 pound Mammoth Wheel of Henning’s Gourmet Wisconsin Mild Cheddar Cheese is on display at Thriftway, just as a huge block was on display in the 1950’s. Owner Kip Yoss invites everyone to stop by for free samples until the block is gone.
Hot Ball Blackout Winners
With only three hot ball numbers, the 62nd number to pop up during bingo at the Adrian Optimist Building on Monday was the last hot ball in the hopper. The last hot ball proved to be lucky number as the $2,800 jackpot was a 3-way split between three winners.

The Adrian R-III School District benefits every day from the dedicated energies and countless hours devoted by the seven members of its Board of Education. These public servants are elected by local constituents and do not receive compensation for their tireless efforts.
Two more wins for the Lady Blackhawks
In a blowout game last week, the Lady Blackhawks crushed Barstow, 60 – 33. This victory brings their record to 7 wins and 1 loss on the season. Coach Nathan Dingman said: “We came out as a team ready to play. Our defense is what made Barstow work.” And the stats back that up as the girls only allowed two Barstow points in the first quarter.
Courtwarming victory takes Blackhawks to 9-0
The Adrian Blackhawks played a hard fought match-up against the Barstow Knights on January 12. In the end, their level of play led them to a final score of 50-49, boosting their record to an impressive 8-0. Coach James Wheeler expressed: “I thought all of our players stepped up. We were able to sustain an early push from Barstow. I thought our guys kept their composure and executed the game plan.”
Adrian wrestlers compete in Warsaw tournament
The Adrian Varsity Wrestling team defeated Pembroke Hill last Tuesday, 66-18. On Saturday they competed in the Warsaw Tournament. The Blackhawks placed 3rd overall. In his first year of Adrian wrestling, Head Coach Ryan Campbell shares his thoughts about the tournament. “There were a lot of our district opponents at the Warsaw Tournament. There was a good showing. Some wrestlers still have some work to do to achieve individual goals, but as a team we are doing okay. The progress is coming along.”

Snow-covered roads cause challenges for firefighters
Heavy snowfall generates quality family time and extends Christmas vacation for Adrian students
Between the 8+ inches of snow that covered the grounds of Adrian and the record cold temperatures and wind chill, R-III students stayed home from school and citizens ventured out only if necessary since Christmas Eve. Some people needed to get out but were snowed in and were forced to stay home. On Friday and Saturday, January 8 and 9, a wind chill warning was issued by the National Weather Service. Actual temperatures were in the single digits with wind chill readings of 10 to 20 below zero.
Blood donors brave the cold to help those in need

Thirty-eight donors braved the extreme cold and ice and showed up to donate blood Tuesday, January 5 at the Adrian Optimist Building. Thirty-seven good units of blood was collected and two were deferred for minor medical reasons. All in all it was a good day.
The next bloodmobile will be March 9, 2010 and hopefully we will have temperatures above freezing and beginning to see green grass instead of ice. Mark you calendars now and I will see you there.
Adrian Chamber elects new board
The Adrian Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting Thursday night, January 7 at Wimfield’s on Main. Due to the weather only 10 people braved the cold and snow to attend. At the meeting, the Chamber held elections for the 2010 board members.

Your Adrian Library has just added a new series to our rental books. The five books making up the Chronicle of the Kings (by Lynn Austin) are historical religious fiction and are ready for check out. An Amazon reader reviewer indicated that the books bring the Old Testament, Joshua, Hezekiah and others to life and are entertaining, inspirational and educational. A local reader reported that she thoroughly enjoyed the books and found herself leafing through her Bible to read further about these wonderfully developed biblical figures.

Blackhawks begin 2010 portion against ElDorado Springs
The Adrian Blackhawks’ boys and girls teams hosted the El Dorado Springs Bulldogs on Tuesday, January 5 to begin the 2010 portion of the season. Despite the inclement weather and no school, the game was played and a good crowd was in attendance.
The Lady Blackhawks began the evening by posting a 59 to 32 win over the Lady Bulldogs. Their record stands at 6 and 1. Coach Dingman said, “We got off to a slow start in the first quarter, but we hit our stride. We shot the ball really well and played great defense.”

Monte Lynn Lawrence, 50, of Adrian, MO, joined the Lord on Sunday, January 17, 2010 in Adrian, MO. Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at the Atkinson Chapel in Adrian, officiated by Rev. Paul E. Burhart, Adrian Christian Church. Music by Kathleen Stephens, organist.

Two churches reunite

Twelve years after they decided to go their separate ways, Adrian Christian Church and Cornerstone Christian Church have reunited. The leaders of Cornerstone made a generous offer on behalf of their congregation to sell their property to Adrian Christian Church for the amount still owed in order to expedite the reunification. The offer also included that the reuniting would take place under the name, constitution and leadership of Adrian Christian Church.

George E. James 1950 - 2009
George Earl James of Urich was born November 28, 1950, the youngest of seven children to Willie and Bertha (Ruby) James at Wetzel Hospital in Clinton. After the loss of his parents at an early age, he was raised by his eldest brother and wife, Robert and Anna Lee James. He departed this life on Monday, December 14, 2009, at his home near Urich at the age of 59 years and 16 days.
Cremation. A celebration of life service was held Tuesday, December 29 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Missouri Veterans Home, Warrensburg.
