“Sometimes it seems like a frat house around here,” Tina Cochran laughed. She stood in a small fenced paddock, surrounded by the ‘boys’, her three dozen alpacas who all watched her, hopeful she brought them some grain as a treat. She had not, but that seemed to be okay. They milled around her, making soft little sounds of contentment or merely chewing their cuds.

Warner Law, LLC named as Business of the Month

The Adrian Chamber of Commerce’s featured business for September is Warner Law, LLC. The business, owned by Cynthia R. Warner, is located at 104 McColloh Street, in the McColloh Building near the intersection of Missouri 18 and Business 71 Highways. Cynthia has been at that location since coming to Adrian less than a year ago. She also has an office in Harrisonville but is closing that one out, to be able to work primarily from Adrian and from a home office. In June, this year, she also became the Adrian city attorney.

Fast and furious scoring for the Blackhawks

The Adrian Blackhawks traveled to Rich Hill last Friday looking to improve on their 2-2 record. They would leave the Tiger’s home field successful in that bid while also gaining valuable playing time for the younger players on the team as Adrian was in control of the ball game within minutes of the opening kick off.

Lady Blackhawks land wins, suffer losses for JV and Varsity teams

It’s been another busy week in volleyball for the Lady Blackhawks. It started out a little disappointing, with losses for both the JV and the varsity when they traveled to Midway on Tuesday and Lamar on Thursday. The real highlight of the week, however, was the invitational varsity tournament at Midway on Saturday.
The team arrived at Midway early in the morning, hungry for success and ready to start off pool play with Jasper. The match was split, with Adrian winning the first game 25-22 and Jasper taking the second 25-23.

Adrian JV takes care of business

The Adrian Blackhawks played at home against the Osceola Indians on Monday, September 28. Adrian got the ball first and drove downfield when quarterback Ethan Weeks broke free for a 38-yard touchdown run. The score was 18-0 after one quarter of play.

After the half, Adrian’s defense stopped Osceola again. Following a short punt, Weeks hit tight end Eric Moles for a 42-yard touchdown pass. The score remained the same for the rest of the game.

JH team defeats Osceola Indians

The Junior High Blackhawks hosted the Osceola Indians Monday, September 28 and Adrian came away with a 40-2 victory. The Blackhawks came out strong with a 57-yard touchdown by running back Briar Corbin.

Osceola got a safety in the second quarter but Adrian answered back with a 72-yard interception and returned it for a touchdown. Williams converted the two point try. Justin Lacy put the final points on the board when he scored a three-yard touchdown and converted the two point try in the third quarter, making it 40-2.

Adrian Little League football hosts Sherwood

The Adrian Blackhawks hosted the Sherwood Marksmen on Saturday, September 26. Neil Tallman, Randy Reed and Jerry Pitts’ teams played at Adrian while Jeff Ford, Jeremiah Reynolds and Matt Shannon’s teams played at Midway. Jeff and Jeremiah’s teams won against Midway and Matt’s team lost.
The first game was the flag game. The final score was 20-6.
The next game was the third and fourth grade game. Adrian’s offense did not show up and got shut out. The final score was 19-0, Sherwood.

Parks - Shepherd

Brian and Eileen Parks of Ballard, MO announce the engagement of their daughter, Brooke Parks, to Travis Shepherd, son of Sheryl Shepherd, of Nevada, MO. The wedding will be October 10, 2009 at the First Christian Church in Butler, MO.

Following the wedding the couple will make their home in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

Dedication Service for Nina Hockett

On Sunday, September 27, 2009, the family and friends of Nina Hockett gathered at the Adrian City Park to dedicate a tree in her memory. The tree, a Red Maple, was purchased by her siblings, Norman and Nason Corwine and her sister Naomi Kershner and their families. The dedication service was officiated by Reverend Ray Burhart.

William Harold Standing 1933 - 2009

William Harold Standing, Port Austin, Michigan passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2009 at the Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe, MI. William was born on October 9, 1933 in Lawrence, KS to Ralph Harold Standing and Thelma Lavon Standing.

Michael Robert “Bob” Hatfield, age 74 of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at his home near Butler. He was born December 7, 1934 to Harley William and Clara Edna McKee Hatfield in Liberal, Missouri.

Paul Owen Raps Sr., age 93 of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. He was born October 14, 1915 to Edward Henry and Luella Griffin Raps in Papinville, Missouri.

Lights! Camera! Action! Family fun at the Adrian City Park

The Adrian City Park held a special meeting Wednesday, September 16 at 6:00 p.m. at the City Park. The special meeting was held to finalize and approve plans to hold a family movie night at the City Park. Steve Hubbard made a motion to approve a movie night to be held on October 10, 2009 by the Fun Flicks, LLC Co. Rose Marie Randolph seconded the motion and it carried.

A dose of fall on Main Street

The Adrian Garden Club and the Adrian Lions Club have added a variety of colorful mums and asters to the planters on Main Street for the fall season for all to enjoy. Local businesses are encouraged to be even more diligent to water Pete’s Pots daily. The best time to water is in the morning.

Cass Regional Medical Center announced the upcoming grand opening of its brand new facility with an official ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony. Built upon an 81-acre plot along Rock Haven Road, the new location also will allow for future growth.

Allen buys first bench for Veterans Memorial

Dale Allen bought the first bench for the Veterans Memorial. He was on hand to watch the placement by Freeman Monument Company. Dale’s bench has his brother Don’s name on the bench with his own.
The sidewalks are all poured thanks to Darrel Poindexter’s hard work.

Demons put to rest as Blackhawks achieve victory

Having played two consecutive games where ill-timed mistakes and costly penalties thwarted their desire for a victory, the Adrian Blackhawks hosted the El Dorado Springs Bulldogs at the Adrian Athletic Complex last Friday looking to reverse the trend that had produced a disappointing 1-2 record.  A win resulting from a better all-around performance would help springboard the team into conference play.

Volleyball action for the Lady Blackhawks

Another week has passed, and with it another batch of volleyball games. On Monday, Adrian played host to Sherwood. Although sadly, the junior varsity did not come out on top, the varsity wrapped up the night with another win for the record, beating the Lady Marksmen in a fairly quick two games.

On Tuesday, Adrian played host yet again, this time to Butler. While again the JV lost, the girls agreed that this match was a learning experience. The varsity Lady Blackhawks then beat the Lady Bears in two games.

Cumpton's awarded first place

Colt Cumpton and his family, from Adrian MO competed at the Missouri State Fair 4-H/FFA Horse Show on July 31, and August 1st and 2nd 2009. This was the third year the group was entered in the Native American Costume Class. The group included; Colt, Clay and Clint Cumpton; Jeffrey and Kylie Caraway from Olathe Ks.;  Natoshia Minor from Butler MO and five horses. In previous years they placed 8th and fifth, but this year they were awarded first.

Adrian Little League football teams take on Drexel Bobcats

Some of the Adrian Blackhawks little leaguers played the Drexel Bobcats Saturday, September 19. The other teams played at Rich Hill. There has been an increasing number of kids going out for little league football the past few years that the league decided to split each division (flag, 3rd and 4th grades and 5th and 6th grades). Doing this allows each child to get more playing time and experience, and to play better in junior high and high school.

Saturday was a great day for soccer. The Adrian 5th and 6th grade team took to the field ready for action. Final score was Adrian 8, Archie 5.

The descendants of William Marion and Ella Stark gathered at the antique tractor village in Adrian for their annual Stark reunion on Sunday, September 20, 2009. First cousins attending were Erma Jean Atkinson, Mary Lee and Pat Oates, Jean Stark, Don and Dorothy Durbin, Bob and Freda Durbin, Larry and Darlene Stark, Peggy Sue Shipley, Linda Pippinger and Joyce Saathoff.

5 Generations

Recently, the Martens family gathered to take a five generation family.  This branch of the family consists of all girls. This was fairly easy to do since Henry and Wilma had a family of four girls!

Linette Mae Cooper, age 53 of Raytown, Missouri died Saturday, September 12, 2009 at her home in Raytown. She was born March 25, 1956 to Randolph Garfield Sr. and Helen Josephine Brown Cooper in Butler, Missouri.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Friday, September 18, 2009 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Rev. Juli Boyd-Whitney officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler.

Callie Naomi (Moul) Bartholomew 1916 - 2009

Callie Bartholomew, 93 of Drexel, Missouri, went home to be with the Lord September 16, 2009 at Adrian Manor, Adrian, Missouri.
She was born June 12, 1916 in Brawley, California, the daughter of J.W.H. and Amanda (Tina) (Powell) Moul.

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 19, 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Drexel. Rev. Steve Bartholomew officiated. Burial was in the Sharon Cemetery, Drexel. Memorial contributions in Callie’s name are suggested to the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home or Adrian Manor, in care of the funeral home.

Jimmie Richard Fields 1932 – 2009

Jimmie Richard Fields, 77 of Butler, MO, died Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, MO. Funeral services were held Friday, September 18, 2009 at the Atkinson Chapel in Harrisonville, MO, officiated by Rev. Henry Green, Cleveland, MO.

Friday, September 11, 2009 marked the eighth anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks on American soil. Over 3000 civilians, firefighters, police officers, military and emergency personnel died in that attack. Although the people and the land hardest hit were on the east coast, everyone’s lives and daily living were deeply impacted by the attacks.

Bloodmobile collects 42 units this month

Forty-eight people showed up to donate blood Tuesday, September 8 at the American Red Cross Bloodmobile. Forty-two good units of blood were collected to save lives. Six people were deferred for minor reasons and will return to donate blood.

The Bloodmobile will return to Adrian on Tuesday, November 3, 2009. Mark your calendars and prepare yourself to give one of life’s most precious gifts, BLOOD.

Thad & Leanne Wimsatt of Peculiar, Missouri proudly announce the birth of their daughter, Sidney Anne, on Wednesday, September 2nd at 11:15am at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, Kansas. Sidney weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces and was 20 inches long.  Paternal grandparents are Randy & Vicki Wimsatt of Adrian.  Paternal great-grandparents are Bob & Peggy Herman and Richard & Jewel Wimsatt, all of Adrian.  Maternal grandparents are Roger & Madelyn Klepper of Butler.

Burris qualifies for Pre-Teen Nationals

Ashlee Burris participated in the Pre-Teen America Academic and Enrichment Program in Jefferson City on Labor Day weekend. Out of 40 participants, Ashlee tied with Brianna Greene of Drexel as the first runner up overall in the junior division. She was selected by her peers for the Spirit Award, and she was recognized as a semi-finalist. In the optional talent portion of the program, Ashlee performed a self-choreographed dance routine to “All-Star” (with advice from dance instructor Jenny Welcher). Ashlee was awarded first runner-up for her performance.

Weaving demo at Manor

Mary Limpus demonstrated weaving on her loom for the Residents of Adrian Manor Health & Rehabilitation Center. She visited the facility on Wednesday morning, September 9.
Mary’s great aunt gave her this l960’s Leclerc Weaving Loom. She weaved Mug Rugs with the M and O’s pattern. Mary indicated that she can weave items up to 10” wide on this loom. Residents enjoyed observing her weaving skills and visiting with her during her demonstration.

Blackhawks fail to take aim on the Sherwood Marksmen

Adrian traveled to Sherwood’s home field to take on the Marksmen last Friday in a closely contested battle that did not end in the Blackhawks favor. Adrian fell to the Sherwood Marksmen 14-12 after Sherwood capitalized off of a two point conversion following their second touchdown of the game.

Lady Blackhawks place 4th in Archie Invitational

Last week saw volleyball players from around the area traveling to the annual Archie Invitational Tournament. Among the competing teams were our very own Lady Blackhawks, who were anxious to redeem themselves based on last year’s performance.

As the girls boarded the bus on Tuesday, the anticipation level was high (as was the volume of the singing). Hume won the first game 25-21, while Adrian took the next 25-22. Thursday night proved to be more of a success than the first when the Blackhawks proudly beat Drexel and Butler in the same night.

Adrian JV suffers first loss in two years

The Adrian Blackhawks junior varsity football team hosted the Appleton City Bulldogs Tuesday, September 8. As soon as the players took the field it started raining.

The teams went back and forth during the first half but the score remained 6-0 with Adrian on top.

Adrian JH starts off season on a high note

The Adrian Blackhawks junior high football team played the Appleton City Bulldogs Tuesday, September 8. They started off strong, scoring on the fifth play despite the rain.

In the 4th quarter Appleton City had a long run and running back Nolan Preston scored a 6 yard touchdown. He also got the 2 point conversion. The score remained 30-8 when the final whistle blew.

Adrian 5th & 6th graders win soccer opener

Season opener arrived with Adrian’s 5th and 6th grade soccer players up for the challenge. Tanner Tullock started the scoring with a triple effort to smack in the first goal.

Blake Doody made the final score when his little brother Case Doody and Tanner worked together to get him the ball. Final score, Adrian 12, Archie 1.

1989 Lady Blackhawks Volleyball team to be recognized

The Missouri State High School Activities Association will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the 1989 State Volleyball Teams. The ceremony will take place during the 2009 Volleyball Championships on November 7, 2009 at the Municipal Auditorium. The 1989 Adrian Lady Blackhawks placed 4th in state so members of that team are invited to participate in this ceremony. The time of this event will be sent once MSHSAA has set a schedule for the state tournament. Any members of the 1989 volleyball that are interested in attending this function should let Athletic Director Don Lile know.

Music Booster Club is in full swing

The Adrian Music Booster Club is in full swing. New officers for the 2009-2010 year are: President, Ken Newsome; Vice President, Diane Olsen; Secretary, Julie Newsome; Treasurer, Wally Henrickson. Committees and Chair Persons: Membership, Martha Reid; Fundraising, Donna Pugh; Uniforms, Julie Newsome; Color Guard, Angie Loughridge; Communications, Donna Pugh. Meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of the month, 7:00 p.m. in the band room - Oct. 13, Nov. 10, Dec. 8, Jan. 12, Feb. 9, March 9, April 13.

Raymond Lee Molt 1941 - 2009

Ray Molt, age 67 of El Dorado Springs, MO, passed away September 2, 2009 at his home (formerly of Buckner, MO). He was born November 10, 1941 to Henry William and Stella Pauline (Suspenski) Molt in Hugo, MO.

Funeral services were September 6, 2009 with Pastor Robert Newberry officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Bland and Hackleman Funeral Chapel, El Dorado Springs, MO. Cremation.

Jewell Faye White 1931 - 2009

Jewell Faye White, age 78 of Urich, Missouri died Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at Golden Living Center Westwood in Clinton, Missouri. She was born February 17, 1931 to Marvin Alfred and Ina Lloy Snodgrass Porter in Butler, Missouri.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Sunday, September 13, 2009 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Brother Bill Perkey officiating. Burial, Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association.

“The biggest change in law enforcement since the 1980’s has been in the dependency of technology,” said newly hired Adrian Police Chief Rick DeBruin. “Officers today have a lot of technical tools to use. And, in the 1980’s, we carried basically handcuffs, a baton or a large flashlight and a gun. Now, we carry a gun, mace, taser and more. And everyone is so reliant on technology. No one talks to people anymore.”

“We’re like a big family here,” said Renee Hastings. “We’re not on a set schedule. We personalize everything, planning meals on what they like to eat. We also take them to the doctor or to the Dollar Store and things like that.”

The First Lady of AHS Football Returns

The power of prayer in Adrian is strong, as evidenced by Patti Bruto’s attendance at the home football game last Friday. On behalf of the AHS football team, the seniors came off the sidelines and honored Patti with a rose as she pulled up to the gate near their locker room. She was surprised and pleased at the deep respect the players showed for her and her husband, George. Pictured above is Skyler Kariker presenting Patti with a rose.

Johnny Daytona played various instruments (mostly guitar), while Mary Crawford played the drums. Both of them were vocalists as well.
Several employees demonstrated their skills with the hula hoop during one of the musical selections. This was a special afternoon for guests and residents who always enjoy lively musical entertainment.

Adrian learned a valuable lesson last Friday at the Adrian sports complex. That lesson was to come prepared to play football and not make mistakes in order to win against a good team. Adrian lost to the very talented Galena Bulldogs 27-7 in a game where mistakes and missed opportunities cost the team dearly.

Promising season for Lady Blackhawks

As volleyball teams begin their seasons around the area, none is more promising than that of our very own Adrian Lady Blackhawks. With high hopes and a hunger for victory, the girls are setting out to prove themselves, and last week was instrumental to that goal.

Tuesday evening brought the entire team to the gym for the junior varsity’s double duel with Miami and Archie. Although no stats were taken for these games, Adrian came out on top in both matches, and the girls are excited to work towards improving themselves and winning more games.

Adrian JV football starts off the season with a win

The Adrian Blackhawks junior varsity team traveled to Lone Jack to play the Mules Monday. The Blackhawks started the game poorly, letting Lone Jack score first. At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied at six and remained that way until halftime.
To end the game, Adrian scored on a pass from Weeks to tight end Eric Moles to make the score 26-6. The score remained the same for the rest of the game.
Adrian will host the Appleton City Bulldogs as the Journal goes to press on Tuesday.

Stanfill's to celebrate 50th wedding anniversary

On September 27th, 1959, Carl Stanfill and Evelyn Jackson were united in marriage at the United Methodist Church in Amsterdam, Missouri. Their children will be hosting a luncheon celebration at their private lake on September 27, 2009 at 1:00 in the afternoon. Friends and Family are invited to attend.

Morgan Minnick of Springfield, MO celebrated her 3rd Birthday at the Adrian City Park Monday, September 7th. Morgan wanted a pony party so Matilda the pony made a surprise visit with pony rides for all the kids. Morgan is the daughter of Jeremy and Desiree Minnick, the granddaughter of Terry and Dee Perrymann of Adrian the great granddaughter of Jr. and Sue Minnick of Butler, Norma Fritts of Butler and Ira and Leola Mundell of Pleasanton, KS.

Nancy Ellen Addleman 1939 - 2009

Nancy Ellen Brown Addleman was born in Huntington Woods, Michigan, on March 9, 1939. She passed away Saturday, September 5, 2009, following a battle with cancer of the liver.

Crystal Manor conducts fire drill with Adrian firefighters

Thursday, August 27, Crystal Manor staff and residents, along with the Adrian Fire and Police Departments took part in a mock fire drill at Crystal Manor. The training session involved a mock kitchen fire and a search for someone inside. After the main part of the drill was completed, Crystal Manor staff were instructed in the proper use of a fire extinguisher.

Dump truck overturns in Adrian

A North Carolina man was injured in a single vehicle accident in Bates County, Thursday August 27, 2009. The accident occurred at 4:00p.m. on Missouri State Highway 18 at First Street on the west edge of Adrian.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Jose Alfaro, 43, of Sanford North Carolina was traveling east in a 1996 Mack dump truck when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned.

Alfaro received serious injuries and was transported by the Life Flight air ambulance to the Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

Blackhawks kick off season with 20-6 win over Butler

The much anticipated start of the 2009 Blackhawks football season kicked off last Friday at the Adrian Sports Complex as Adrian hosted the Butler Bears.

Adrian received the ball first but the game was well into the second quarter before either team put a point on the board. Adrian was first to strike paydirt as Luke Hough tore off an outstanding 20 yard run with 8:26 on the clock in the second quarter of play.

With the start of another school year at Adrian R-3 came the start of another volleyball season. As tradition holds, a hairspray game was held at the school at 6:00 last Tuesday evening to kick off the start of the games.

“Strykers return to Alaska and he’s home...I’m cutting my yellow ribbons down!!!” Soldiers from the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team out of Fort Wainwright arrived Saturday evening at Eielson Air Force after a year deployment in Iraq. SPC Khalid Jurdi, the son of Julie Stevens of Adrian, was one of the soldiers who was returning. “It has been a LONG year.” I want to say thank you to all who prayed for Khalid and I just ask that you keep all our military personnel in your prayers.

Jerry “Yogi” Clark 1940 - 2009

Jerry “Yogi” Clark joined his Savior and loved ones that have gone on before him on Sunday, August 23, 2009. Yogi was born on November 16, 1940 at the Burdette family home and was a lifelong resident of the Adrian/Burdette community. He was the fourth of five children born to Roy Z. and Millie (Ketner) Clark.
