Archer and Elmer honored at ceremony for achieving Eagle Scout rank
Two boy scouts from Adrian, MO Troop 238 were awarded the rank of Eagle in a Court of Honor on Saturday, June 27, 2009. The ceremony took place at the Adrian United Methodist Church at 7:00 p.m. Receiving the rank of Eagle Scout were Caleb Archer and Hayden Elmer.
Both Caleb and Hayden come from a family line of Eagle Scouts. Caleb and Hayden also mark a great accomplishment for Adrian Boy Scout Troop 238, as this troop alone has recognized and advanced well over 100 Eagle Scouts.
The power of prayer for Patti
Patti Bruto was life-flighted to St. Luke’s Hospital on Monday night. The Adrian community is rallying around Patti, George and the Bruto Family. In a special gathering at the R-III football field on Tuesday, Dawn Tenholder thanked everyone for their love and support. Teri Jo Richmond, friend of the family, gave an update on Patti’s condition. In closing, Wally Henrickson said a special prayer.

It's a Hip Hop Hoe Down!
The Dance Craze held its last summer camp of the year with a Hip Hop Hoe Down. Dancers learned cool hip hop moves with a western flair. They also tumbled and played games with a parachute. Bloodmobile - Thank You!
What a good day Tuesday, July 14 was at the Red Cross Bloodmobile, when 54 donors showed up to donate blood. Fifty-one good units were collected. Three were deferred for minor reasons and will be back with us the next time. Ten new donors to Red Cross showed up and we hope they will continue to donate blood.
Looking forward to seeing everyone again on September 8, 2009.
Saathoff's celebrate 50th wedding anniversary
Lynn and Joyce Durbin Saathoff (pictured right) were married on July 11, 1959 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 11, 2009 at their home with their family gathering together for the celebration. The day was spent taking some family pictures and having a good time together. To further celebrate they left on the 13th for a 10 day trip up through Michigan and Wisconsin, seeing lots of God’s beautiful country.

Adrian Cub Scouts attend day camp
Five boys from Adrian Cub Scout Pack 238 attended Cub Scout Day Camp June 15-19, 2009 at Clinton, MO’s Artisan Park. The theme for 2009 was “Cub Fun in the Next Generation”.
Adults and leaders attending this camp session were Erin Newport, Everett Cates, Larry Dowse, Theresa Deems, Mark Elmer and Melinda Elmer.
Boys, 7 years old or first grade through fifth grade, are welcome to join Adrian Cub Scout Pack 238. Although we will hold our annual fall sign ups, boys are welcome to join at any time. For more information contact Mark Elmer, Cubmaster at 816-297-2022.

Local team crowned 2009 Show Me Game champs
A group of local girls left the 2009 Show Me Games in Columbia, Missouri as the Gold medal winners. The 25th annual games started for the team on Friday afternoon and from the opening whistle to the gold medal round, the girls never looked back. They left no doubt who the team to beat was on that weekend, winning all five games with scores of 30-2, 42-4, 34-10, 33-16 and 28-4.

Blackhawk Music Notes a New Day
The Adrian R-III School District is taking a new path toward building its number of students involved in fine arts. This year, the band will be open to junior high students and high school students that would like to participate on an extracurricular level. Enrollment in both choral and band classes has been difficult for many students to fit into their schedule and this is a MSHSAA approved method to augment numbers in smaller districts. High school students will also be able to participate in the vocal/choral program without being enrolled during the school day.

James Edward Stevens Jr., age 61 of Butler, Missouri died Friday, July 10, 2009 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born September 3, 1947 to James Edward Sr. and Dorothy Goodin Stevens in Butler.
Graveside memorial services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 17, 2009 at Dayton Cemetery in Urich, Missouri.
Walking trail nears completion
The Adrian City Park Board announced that the walking trail has been sprayed and gravel spread - thank you to the Adrian City crew for their work. The trail is now ready for paving by Davis Asphalt of Archie. This could be accomplished if the weather holds this week. The Board needs to remind all users of the trail that it is for pedestrian traffic only. We know this project has been a long time in the planning and it is our hope that many will use and enjoy it for years to come.
The road to success is always under construction
Bates County Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce the expansion of the existing Nursery Street Family Care Clinic located west of the Hospital at 617 West Nursery Street in Butler. The expansion will double the size of the clinic, thereby allowing future growth of healthcare providers for the Bates County community and surrounding areas. There will be eight additional treatment rooms, two physicians offices, nurses’ offices, laboratory and restrooms.

She is the daughter of Henry Anderson and adoptive parents Pam and Dickie Craft. The Queen is Brandy Crist, right, 17. Brandy is the daughter of David and Kathy Crist of Butler.

"Hippie Chicks" celebrate the '60's
The Dance Craze held its first summer camp of the season. The theme for this camp was “Hippie Chicks.” The studio was filled with peace signs, flowers and tye-dye fabric as the dancers celebrated the 60’s era with songs, dances and crafts. Caleb Shanks finishes 3rd
Caleb Shanks of Adrian participated in the US Army Midwest National Wrestling Tournament in Bloomington, IL on Saturday, July 11th. Caleb finished 3-1 on the day for a third place finish in the 3rd/4th grade division at 92 lbs.
He lost 4-2 in an overtime match in the semi-finals. The tournament had 902 participants representing kids from 12 states.

The South All Star team won against the North All Star Team 15 – 14 last Friday night! This team is made up of two girls selected from each of the league teams. Kimble Anders hosts football camp
Area youth, ages 6-16 were afforded the opportunity to participate in a unique, non-contact football camp at Memorial Stadium in Harrisonville. Former KC Chiefs three-time Pro-Bowl Fullback Kimble Anders and his experienced staff offered one-on-one instruction in areas such as passing, receiving, running, blocking and tackling. Because football is a team game, each individual learned to operate within the team concept.

The City of Adrian recently sponsored a Business About Town and open house at the new water treatment facility. During the day those that attended guessed how many straws in a membering water treatment filter. The correct number was 6500. Lori Haskins was the winner with her guess of 6200. She was presented a $50 Chamber Bucks certificate from Tom Williams, City Water Plant Manager.

Nina Susan Lanyon, age 52 of Butler, Missouri died Sunday, July 12, 2009 at her home in Butler. She was born March 27, 1957 to J.R. and Berta Lurine Gorman Wade in Malta Bend, Missouri.
Nina’s wishes were to be cremated. Private family services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to a charity of choice in Nina’s memory.

Mrs. Betty Jean Smith of Adrian, Missouri was born December 21, 1925 in Osceola, Missouri the daughter of Alva and Nora Ethel (Doyle) Wheeler. She departed this life on Sunday, July 12, 2009 at Medicalodge of Butler, Butler, Missouri at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 21 days.
Services were held Wednesday, July 15, 2009, 10:00 a.m. at the Dickey Funeral Home in Garden City, Missouri. Officiating was Rev. Giffin Simmons. Interment was in the Dayton Cemetery near Garden City, Missouri.

Betty Lorene Webster was born to Herbert Lloyd Greene and Naomi (Miller) Greene in Edwards, Missouri, on March 2, 1930. She married Donald Calvin Webster on April 24, 1949 and they resided in Knob Noster, Missouri.
Funeral services were held at Floral Hills Chapel on Tuesday, July 7 at 10 a.m. Burial was in the Knob Noster Cemetery, Knob Noster, Missouri.

Ribbon cutting ceremony planned for new helipad

The Fire Department and the Adrian Optimist Club will be hosting a special event later this month and everyone is invited to attend. On Tuesday, July 28 at 7:00 p.m., a special ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony will be held for the new medical helicopter landing pad at Old 71 Highway and Coop Road on the Optimist Community Building grounds. Following the ceremony, the Optimist Club will serve free popcorn and soft drinks.

Dani Gutshall, 2006 graduate of Adrian High, completed her LPN at State Fair Community College in Sedalia. Graduation was May 15 at The Fred Ed Davis Center in Sedalia. Dani is continuing her education and will complete the R.N. program in the spring of 2010.
Dani is the daughter of Kent Gutshall and the granddaughter of Dub and Bonnie Gutshall and Jack and Kathie Willerton of Adrian.

Manor residents enjoy picnic
The residents of Adrian Manor had a great time at their picnic on Thursday, July 2. The weather was beautiful and everyone ate outside while listening to music. They had hamburgers and hotdogs hot off the grill with all of the typical cook-out side dishes, including lemonade and watermelon. Everyone had a good appetite and lots of smiles and chit chat about picnics in the past. Our residents are so happy about the new patio furniture purchased from the proceeds of the bake sale. The Adrian Manor courtyard looks beautiful and the residents are very proud of it. Everyone had a great time.

Residents of Adrian Manor Health & Rehabilitation Center were entertained by Bobby and Bonnie Hathorn during Friday afternoon, July 3, prior to the evening meal. They provided delightful banjo music, as well as sang various familiar country and religious songs. Bobby and Bonnie are from Mississippi and travel throughout various locations of the United States sharing their special talent. This special music was one of various special events enjoyed by the residents during the Independence Day Week.

Rhonda Kennedy passed away July 4th at her home in Adrian, MO surrounded by family and friends. She was 48 years old. She was born October 17, 1960 in Reno, Nevada to Thelma “Tillie” and Lee Overturf.
Services will be held Saturday, July 11 at 11 a.m. at Atkinson Funeral Chapel in Adrian, MO with visitation preceding at 10 a.m., also at Atkinson Funeral Chapel. Burial will be held at Clearfork Cemetery near Garden City, MO. Family suggests contributions be made to the Rhonda Kennedy Memorial through Adrian Bank in lieu of flowers.

Casey’s opens its doors
The new and improved Casey’s opened in Adrian on Thursday, June 25. Bright and early at 5am, Randy Wimsatt was the first customer at the gas pump. He was greeted in the store by returning cashier Sharon Riggs.
The grand opening was a smash hit, as customers from Adrian and surrounding areas stopped in to check it out. Casey’s sells homemade pizza, homemade-to-go subs and wraps, and hot sandwiches, appetizers and breakfast.

Don't forget to donate blood

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Adrian on Tuesday, July 14 from 1- 6 p.m. at the Adrian Optimist Building. All types of blood are needed and greatly appreciated by those in need. The need is great. I know everyone is busy this time of year and you may feel it won’t be missed. However, a person in need will miss that unit of blood.

Donates to food pantry
The Adrian Food Pantry provides food for 70 families to date. The Pantry relies solely on donations to assist people in need. Because of a food collection drive at Adrian R-III, two nine year olds were determined to help even more. Taylor Keith and Ashlee Burris found all sorts of ways to raise nearly $55.00. Taylor and Ashlee bought a wide-variety of non-perishables and donated them to the Adrian Food Pantry on Wednesday, June 24. Pictured, left to right: Ashlee Burris, Julie Stevens and Taylor Keith.
Adrian Manor hosts picnic to honor dedicated volunteers

The weather cooperated with sunshine, fluffy clouds in a bright blue sky and a light breeze rustling through the shelter house and the trees on the Adrian Manor Health and Rehabilitation’s patio area. Around two dozen people came out in last week’s summery heat to enjoy an appreciation picnic at the Manor. The picnic was held for the many volunteers who devote their time and talents for the residents.

Thanks to the students, parents and everyone who sent receipts to the school, PTO raised $2,800.
