Family Fun on the Fourth
The Adrian Optimist Club is preparing for the annual Adrian Independence Day Celebration to take place on Saturday, July 4. There will be plenty of activities for everyone.
The full day of family fun begins at 10:30 a.m. with the popular and patriotic parade down Main Street that eventually ends at the Adrian City Park where food, fun and the major activities will take place.

Arnie & Martha Drendel of Leeton, MO are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter Kristin Drendel to William Engelhardt, son of Steve & Elaine Engelhardt of Ballard, MO. Kristin graduated from UCM in 2004. She is now a teacher and coach at Leeton R-10. Will graduated from State Fair Community College in 2001. He is now at Hartzlers Equipment Company. They are planning a September wedding on the family farm in Ballard.
Adrian Manor CNAs honored during Nursing Assistants Week
“CNA’s (Certified Nursing Assistants) are the “backbone” of our industry” stated Adrian Manor Administrator Fredrickson, “And to them our sincere gratitude is truly extended.” They were recognized last week at our facility with a variety of fun-filled events not the least of which a flowing chocolate fondue fountain was provided by Dina Fredrickson on Wednesday, June 17th. CMT’s (Certified Medication Technicians) and RA’s (Restorative Aides) have also been and/or still are C.N.As.
Manor bake sale
The Adrian Manor Bake Sale held on June 20, 2009 at Adrian Manor was a huge success raising approximately $1,600.00 total to be applied to the purchase of patio furniture for the residents. Pictured are the judges, Thelma Six, Anna Lee James, Carol Gregg and Dollie Benz. Appreciation goes to all who donated and participated, making this quickly planned event a success. Also appreciation to the brave volunteers who had the difficult task of judging the pie contest.

Missouri FFA members find real treasure
Over 1100 FFA members from 110 Missouri High Schools had the opportunity to learn how to become effective leaders at the 65th annual Missouri FFA State Leadership Camp. This year’s six weekly camping sessions were held between June 1st and July 10th.
Nine members of the Adrian FFA Chapter attended camp the week of June 15th through the 19th. They participated in activities such as trapshooting, disking, water skiing, and leadership workshops.

Gun Club takes second at state
On June 12, 13, and 14 the Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) state contest took place at the United Sportsman’s Club in Jefferson City, MO. Conrad Walley (back row, far right) Shoots with the Pioneer Gun Club of Holden, MO. And his team placed second in the Jr. Division. Shooting events for YHEC are Black powder rifle, 22, rifle, archery and shotgun. Brain games events are hunter responsibility, Orienteering, wildlife ID and hunter safety trail. Individually Conrad tied for first in black powder, received third place in 22 rifle and was sixth overall in the Jr. Division.
Storm roars through Adrian, causes destruction in Drexel
Right: Severe storms roared through Adrian and Drexel late Monday night causing extensive tree and property damage. A large portion of the Kansas City area was affected by high winds and hail. The storm was responsible for power outages, wind damage and flooding concerns for Adrian and the surrounding communities. In Drexel, reports of buildings, downed power lines, and uprooted trees were prevalent. Basic services such as power, and telephone were interrupted. Emergency response crews were proactively checking elderly and homes where the worst damage had occured.
Open House held at Adrian’s new water plant facility
Adrian City Council members cut the ribbon to kickoff the celebration of a new and improved water system in Adrian.

WMAT&MA preparing for 31st Annual Steam and Gas Engine Show

The Western Missouri Antique Tractor and Machinery Association members are busy at Frontier Village, preparing for their 31st Annual Steam and Gas Engine Show, to be held Friday June 26 through Sunday June 28.

R-3 students observe drivers

Wednesday June 10, the Adrian R-3, Drivers Education students took their studies outside to observe real world situations in driving a vehicle. The students and Mr. Abrams, their teacher, went to the intersection at Old 71 Highway and Missouri 18 Highway, to observe when, if and how drivers proceeded through the intersection and if the rules of proper right of way were obeyed.
Lions Club holds kids fishing day
The Adrian Lions Club held their annual Kids Fishing Day last Saturday at Harley Martens’ pond. Right: Several kids enjoyed the day of fishing along with their parents. Ethel Marie Young 1920 - 2009
Ethel Marie Young, 89, Adrian, MO, died Friday, June 12, 2009 at Adrian Manor in Adrian, MO. Ethel was born February 19, 1920 in Fontana, KS, the daughter of George Henry and Kate May (Moore) Brocker. She was a 1937 graduate of Fontana High School. She was so happy to attend her 70th class reunion in May 2007.
Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2009 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, Missouri. Rev. Bob Maffitt, Adrian United Methodist Church officiated. Interment was in Miami County Memorial Gardens, Paola, KS.

Masyn Michael Brian Lile, age 2 of Butler, Missouri died Sunday, June 14, 2009 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. He was born June 6, 2007 to Derek Keith and Lyssa Nicole Thompson Lile in Nevada, Missouri.

Virginia Ferguson 1927 - 2009
Virginia Ferguson, age 82, of Adrian, Missouri, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Adrian Manor Health and Rehabilitation Center in Adrian, Missouri. Virginia, one of five children, was born April 20, 1927 in Kansas City, MO, the daughter of Lloyd E. and Ethel A. (FIsher) Ackerley.

Gerald “Jerry” Dwain Strauch, age 79 of Roach, Missouri died Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Parkside Manor in Columbia, Missouri. He was born June 29,1929 to Herman Ivon Sr. and Velda Adeline Chandler Strauch in Lincoln,Nebraska.

Constance “Connie” H. Senseman 1935 - 2009
Former Adrian resident Constance “Connie” H. Senseman, 74, Hugoton, Kansas, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009 in Haskell County, Kansas as a result of an automobile accident. Connie was born April 18, 1935 in Kansas City, Missouri to Arthur and Ella Burruss.
A memorial service for Connie was held on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at the Hugoton United Methodist Church in Hugoton, Kansas. Reverend Harry Cross presided over the service.
Edna Mae “Eddie” Walker 1918 - 2009
Edna Mae “Eddie” Walker, age 91 of Ozark, Missouri passed away Friday, June 19, 2009 at Riverside Manor in Ozark. She was born March 31, 1918 to Robert Lee and Maggie Conard Everett in Butler, Missouri.
Funeral services were 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Rev. Chad Mattingly officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Contributions, Nixa Christian Church.
Adrian Elks Lodge Instituted
On Sunday June 7, 2009, the new Adrian Elks Lodge was formally instituted as an organization. Elks dignitaries from the Joplin Lodge conducted the initiation ceremony and local officers were installed. The new lodge is now Adrian Lodge 2864 and has just under 100 members from Adrian, Butler and Ballard.
As a non-profit service organization, the Elks are dedicated to many good causes, from the Hoops program to youth scholarships and to helping soldiers overseas and veterans here at home and in the VA hospitals.
Tribute to Vietnam Vets
This Huey helicopter #66-00970 was on display at the Bates County Museum on Saturday, May 30, when Vietnam veterans were honored during a special program. The Huey completed a total of 3,482 combat mission hours on hundreds of flights and transported thousands of assault troops into and out of “hot LZ”, providing fire cover and delivering supplies.

Steeple symbolizes love and faith in God
The Victory Assembly of God Church has a new addition. Saturday, June 6, in a span of about three hours, a crew installed a new steeple and cross on the building’s roof top.
Robert Lovelace, a World War II veteran, died December 7, 2005 at the age of 82. He loved the Lord and that love is manifested in the cross and the spire atop the church building. One of his sons, Mark, did all the leg work to make the family’s donation to their church a reality, but the whole family was involved.
Miles for Meals event is a success
Thanks to the wonderful volunteers and their sponsors, it was another successful Miles For Meals event. On Sunday, June 7, walkers were out and about picking up trash around Adrian in support of this program. New Arrival - Brock Steven Barbarick
Brett and Stacey Barbarick, of Peculiar, MO, are pleased to announce the birth of their first son, Brock Steven Barbarick. Brock was born on April 21, 2009 weighing 7 lbs. and 4 ozs. D’Angelo Austin Frazier was born May 5, 2009 at Naval Air Station Sigonella in Sicily, Italy. He was 6 lbs. and 19 inches long.
Proud parents are Deborah and Derrick Frazier. Grandparents are Joseph and Joanah Ibilola of San Diego, CA and Susan and Harold James and Benny Gillis, Adrian, MO. Great grandparents are Ruth Frazier and Bonnie Lacy, Adrian.
Honored for 50 years of service
Mary Zellmer, Art Zellmer and Ann Taylor (pictured left to right) were recognized for 50 years of dedicated service for the Missouri Order of Eastern Star in a special ceremony on Thursday, May 7, 2009. In addition to their 50 Year Pins, the Officers of Crescent Hill Chapter #127 presented certificates of appreciation and a floral program to these three devoted members. Art and Mary’s son David and daughter Debbie assisted in the pinning as did Ann’s son Tom and daughters Julie, Sandee and Vickie.

Dance Craze holds recital
It was “A Time 2 Dance” on Sunday, May 31 when the Dance Craze held its annual dance recital at Butler High School. Dancers performed solos, small and large group routines, and an all dance company finale. Congratulations to Jenny and Jeremy Welcher and the Dance Craze recital team for making this year’s show memorable for the dancers and their families.

Gene DeLozier, age 80 of Butler, Missouri died Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. He was born October 27, 1928 to Robert Aura and Blanche Marie Emogene Luther DeLozier in Deepwater, Missouri.

Virginia Lee Green, age 80, of Adrian, MO, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009. Virginia was born May 1, 1929, the daughter of Arthur Glenn and Grace Agnea (Godsey) Robb, in La Harpe, Kansas, the only daughter of nine children.

Marion Cecil Briscoe, age 69 of Rich Hill, Missouri died Monday, June 1, 2009 at St. Joseph Health Center in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born March 2, 1940 to Charley and Ethel Prudence Blevins Briscoe in Foster, Missouri.

Austin will be attending Fort Scott Community College in the fall where he will major in Farm/Ranch Management. Austin’s award was presented by Tracy Rugg. The Rugg family wishes Austin the best and “Go get ‘em, buddy!”

Training classes for emergency personnel

The volunteer firefighters have had a lot of additional training classes involving several agencies, including both the Adrian and Butler Fire Departments, the Butler and Adrian Police, the Bates County Sheriff’s Office and the Bates County EMS ambulance crew.
All the participants followed a scenario devised by Adrian Fire Chief Gary Dizney and a member of the Butler Fire Department, Jason Bennett.
Heliport construction is progressing; financial assistance still needed

Construction of the new heliport is progressing when the cement for the pad and sidewalk was poured late last week (pictured right). Lighting and paint are in the next phases of the construction plan.
The heliport is a joint effort by the Adrian Optimist Club, the Adrian Lions Club, and the Adrian Volunteer Fire Department, along with help from the community. The purpose of the project is to provide better emergency services for the area.
Bicycle safety promoted by Adrian Optimist Club
The Adrian Optimist Club sponsored its annual bike rodeo for kids pre-K to 6th grade. About 25 bike riders (pictured right) learned about bicycle safety from the Adrian Police Department, and they were given safety flags and helmets from the Optimists. Optimist Club members inspected their bikes and adjusted or tightened bike parts as needed. The kids received two bicycle tires courtesy of Scott Ford and their names were entered into a drawing for a new bike from the Optimist Club.
New Wheelchair Ramps for Adrian Senior Housing
On Saturday, May 30, Garrett Huntsman and 10 scouts built wheelchair accessible ramps for Adrian Senior Housing. The construction of the ramps was coordinated by Garrett, who chose this project for his Eagle Scout Leadership Project. New Arrival - Bailey Renee Shaw
Bailey Renee Shaw was born May 20, 2009 at 11:33 p.m. (6:33 p.m. Oahu time). She weighed 7lbs. 3 ozs.
Parents are Jason and Norma Shaw. Paternal grandparents are Dwayne and Karen Shaw; maternal grandmother is Maria Arellano of Winters California.
Jason is stationed at Schofield Barracks on the island of Oahu.
New Arrival - Heidi Lynn Osborne
Casey Osborne and Randelle Ragan of Adrian, MO are proud to announce the birth of their daughter; Heidi Lynn Osborne. Heidi arrived May 17, 2009 at 4:42 am at St. Joseph Medical Center. She weighed 6 lbs. 15 oz. and was 19 1/2 inches long.
Proud grandparents are Jim and Billie Osborne and Aaron and Lynn Bennett. Heidi was also welcomed by her uncles: Logan, Brohde and Opossum; and her Aunt Chelsea.
United in Marriage
Tucker Patrick Essenpries announces the marriage of his parents, Brenna Danie’l Peel and Ryan Patrick Essenpries. They were married Friday, May 22, 2009. Parents are Renee Peel, Joyce McGlade and Doug Essenpries. A reception will be held at the home of Renee Peel Saturday, June 27. Friends and family are invited.
14th Annual Miles for Meals
As this event approaches this Sunday, June 7 (2 p.m.-4 p.m.), we want to give thanks to the many faithful volunteers who serve each day. And we are grateful to the nine-week rotation of drivers who are most valuable for the success of this program delivery as there have been 4,367 meals delivered to Adrian in the past year!
We welcome walkers of any age to help “pick-up” around Adrian and then finish with a pork burger picnic. A $35 donation equals a t-shirt and sponsor sheets are available in the Houston Plaza Clubhouse at 125 S. Houston or call 816-297-4203.

Jack Rabourn receives 50 Year Pin
Crescent Hill Masonic Lodge #368 at Adrian, Mo. held an open meeting on Thursday night May 28th for the purpose of presenting Brother Jack Rabourn a pin for 50 years of service. Brother Rabourn’s wife Beverly was present as well as his children, grandchildern and great grandchildren with a total of 14.
District Deputy Grand Master and Lodge Secretary Brother Larry White read Jack’s Masonic Record, which included being Master of the Lodge in 1965 - 66. Brother Art Zelmer presented Jack with his pin (pictured) and Dustin Rabourn pinned it on his grandfather.
Spring Celebration
The Adrian Ministerial Alliance sponsored its first annual spring celebration on Saturday, May 30 at Frontier Village. At no cost to the public, the Alliance served food for everyone and brought in inflatables for the kids. Four bands performed for the crowd: a Southern Gospel group, Friends of the King and Crimson in Flood. A community worship service concluded the celebration. Pictured are celebration attendees, who are enjoying the gospel music and the hot dogs. More than 200 people attended this first-time event.
1st Annual Gun Show held
Adrian Elks Lodge No. 2864 held their 1st annual Gun Show at the Bates County Fair Grounds Friday, May 29 through Sunday, May 31. Visitors at the show had lots of guns, ammo, accessories and knives of all kinds, including custom crafted blades. The ladies of the lodge provided breakfast, lunch, and snacks.
Kinker Memorial benches installed
The family of Harry Kinker recently donated funds to the Adrian Optimist Club, of which he was a longtime member. The Optimist Club used the funds to purchase these benches for the Optimist Community Building in Harry’s memory.
The new benches were installed on Thursday, May 28, 2009. Harry Kinker passed way in a vehicle accident on December 2, 2008.

Nina Mae (Corwine) Hockett, 75, Adrian, MO, passed away Friday, May 29, 2009 at Adrian Manor Health and Rehabilitation Center in Adrian. Graveside services were held Tuesday, June 2, 2009, 2:00 p.m. at Scott Cemetery in Amterdam, MO. Rev. Ray Burhart, Adrian Christian Church, Adrian, officiated. Interment was in Scott Cemetery, Amsterdam.
