Adrian dancers receive top awards
Competes in Dance Challenge
Jordan Reichert competed in the International Dance Challenge in Lawrence, KS on March 14 and 15. She placed 4th overall in the senior solo competition for her modern solo entitled “Honey”. This category was composed of 110 entries by dancers ranging from ages 13 - 19. Jordan was also part of a large group that placed first overall in the senior large group category performing a modern routine to “MIC Check”, and a senior line that placed second overall in the category as well as winning the IDC Entertainment Challenge for outstanding entertainment quality.

Sixth Grade Honor Choir
Sixth grade students from Adrian R-3 participated in the 6th Grade Honor Choir held at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg on March 7, 2009. They presented a concert that afternoon with approximately 200 6th grade students from 28 area and district schools. Their director was Dr. Scott Quant from Oral Roberts University. Rebecca Keating crowned 2009 Barnwarming Queen
The R-III annual FFA Barnwarming Dance was held Friday, March 13, 2009 in the Adrian High School Commons Area. Music was provided by Creative Tunes. Attendees enjoyed good music and the competitive games that were used to choose this year’s Barnwarming Queen. This year’s candidates competed against each other in nail driving, board sawing, bale throwing, and water chugging. The winner of the competitions and this year’s Barnwarming Queen is Rebecca Keating.

Funeral services set for Gaylord "Pete" Hill
Gaylord “Pete” Hill passed away Monday morning. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 26, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian. Funeral services will be held Friday, 11:00 a.m. at the Adrian United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made to the Adrian United Methodist Church.

Henrietta Grace Hellwig, age 94 of Butler, Missouri died Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. She was born July 25, 1914 to Carl Carter and Della Hazel Kline Gutshall in Adrian, Missouri.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Friday, March 27, 2009 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Pastor Ron Dunlap officiating and Jerry Johannigmeier assisting. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri. Contributions may be made to the Pleasant Gap Christian Chruch.

Helen Alice Haverfield, age 93, of Parker, Kansas died Saturday March 21, 2009 at the home of her daughter near Parker. She was born on July 6, 1915 at Centerville, Kansas the daughter of Arlo S. and Cora Cooper McCarty.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 2009 at the Parker United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery, Parker, Kansas. The family suggests contributions to the Parker United Methodist Church, WMAT&MA or the Parker Community Historical Society.

Steve Hubbard named Adrian Chamber Person of the Year
The Adrian Chamber of Commerce held its 8th Annual Spring Banquet on Friday, March 13, 2009 at Frontier Village. Chamber President Curtis Reynolds (pictured far right) welcomed a record number of attendees. Reynolds then introduced George W. Bush Impersonator Brent Mendenhall (middle picture). The crowd roared with laughter during Mendenhall’s hilarious presentation as “W”.

38 units of blood donated

Tuesday, March 10 was a slow day at the American Red Cross Bloodmobile. However, 38 good units of blood was collected with four donors being deferred for minor reasons. We appreciate all the donors and those that tried to donate as blood is very much in need.
As always, the Bloodmobile appreciates all the volunteers. The Bloodmobile will return to Adrian on May 12. Maybe we will see you there.
Child endangered in Adrian, police searching for father

Adrian Police are looking for a man wanted in connection with a domestic violence situation that also involved child endangerment when the baby was abducted by her father.
The police issued a BOLO, (be on the lookout) for Adrian resident Brandon William Peel in an attempt to recover the child.
Woman of the Year announced
Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month
The Adrian Chamber of Commerce’s featured business for March is the King’s Kutter Barber Shop, located at 44 East Main Street in Adrian. The business, owned and operated by Matt Cunningham, has been at that location since April 1 of last year.
Matt offers specialized and traditional barbering. “I can do about anything they need. I cut all types of hair for all races and ages. I cut hair for women too, ” he said. Matt also said he is one of the last who still does lather neck trims and hot lather shaves.

Coach Wheeler is proud of Blackhawks accomplishments

The Adrian Blackhawks took on the Miller Cardinals last Saturday, March 14 in the Quarterfinals. The game was played at Missouri State University in Springfield.
This game presented big challenges for the Blackhawks as two players were injured and one was sick with the flu. Adrian came out slow and Miller capitalized, taking a big lead early in the game, 20-8. Adrian made a run late in the fourth quarter but just could not make-up the large deficit. They ended up losing, 52-40.

Allen Leon Westhoff, 80, Adrian, MO, went to be with his Lord Wednesday, March 11, 2009. Allen was born March 30, 1928 in Archie, MO, the son of Leo John and Grace Leon (Melton) Westhoff.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 13, 2009, 2:00 p.m. at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, Missouri. Pastor Mark Richman of the Altona Baptist Church, officiated. Interment was in the Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian.

New Mayor and Alderman appointed

The regular Adrian City Council meeting on March 9 opened with the announcement that the Council held a special emergency meeting on February 17. At that meeting, Larry Ritter was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Mayor Ray Cusumano, and Danny Ferguson was appointed to fill the unexpired term of North Ward Alderman Larry Ritter. The Council voted to appoint Mike Lemon as Mayor Pro Tem.
Adrian heliport in the works

The Adrian Optimist Club, the Adrian Lions Club and the rural and city sides of the Adrian Volunteer Fire Department are working together to provide better emergency services for the Adrian community. A new Adrian Heliport is being constructed to make air ambulance services better available to those needing speedy ambulance services to appropriate hospitals.

The Adrian Blackhawks District Champs defeated the Archie Whirlwinds in an exciting game last Saturday. This victory landed the boys an opportunity to advance to Sectionals. Blackhawks win round two in District play

ROUND TWO
The Adrian boys took on Liberal in round two of the District tournament. The game started very slow for the Blackhawks, and after one quarter they were behind 16-12. The fourth quarter picked up with both teams scoring lots of points and the lead not changing. Adrian went on to win 76-64. This win pushed the Blackhawks record to 24 wins and 3 losses on the year.
Adrian Coach James Wheeler commented, “This was a grind it out game. Multiple players stepped up and scored. A good solid win.”
Lady Blackhawks move to championship game

ROUND ONE
The Adrian Lady Blackhawks kicked off their district tournament action against the Appleton City Bulldogs. Adrian came out and right from the start took control of this one. By the end of the first quarter Adrian was up 16-5. The Blackhawks went on to win round one of districts by a score of 63-34. This pushes the Blackhawks record to 24 wins and 2 losses on the year.
Adrian Coach Nathan Dingman commented, “We shot well. Good game when you shoot 6/13 from 3 point land.”

Two Time League Champs
Adrian’s 5th grade girls basketball team won their way through the tournament bracket by defeating the Midway Vikings and the Sherwood Marksmen on Saturday, February 28th. The championship game on Sunday found the Blackhawks facing the Rich Hill Tigers. The Blackhawks were victorious with a final score of 28-22. This is their second league championship. They had an undefeated regular and tournament season with a record 11-0.
Adrian Optimist Student of the Month
Rebecca Lawrence was selected as the Adrian Optimist Student of the Month. She is a senior at Adrian R-III. Becca plays basketball and softball for AHS, serves on the yearbook staff and participates in Quill and Scroll. Becca plans on attending Missouri State University in the fall with a major in Mass Media.

Adrian Quiz Bowl Team places first

The Quiz Bowl team shared their sentiments about the Bowl: “The Osceola team members were good sports. They were the most competition we had. It was really fun. Oh, and the cheese tasted great,” several Blackhawks said at the same time. “I think we did really well as a team,” Joey Frazier stated.

Head Start students make visit to dentist
On February 19, 2009, Adrian Head Start provided transportation for children to the dentist in Kansas City. Transportation to various appointments is one of the many services offered to families through Head Start. Area Bates County Head Starts are currently accepting applications for the 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 school year. Head Start is a comprehensive, federally funded preschool program. The program serves children ages three to five years old. Head Start welcomes and works closely with children that have special needs or disabilities.

Homer Eugene Pruden, 87, Adrian, MO, passed away at his home on Wednesday, March 4, 2009. He was born February 25, 1922 in Arapahoe, Nebraska, the son of Homer Hughes and Leeta Fern (Hill) Pruden. From an early age he was known as Gene since his father’s name was also Homer.
Services were held Friday, March 6, at 2:00 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian with Rev. Bob Maffitt officiating. Burial was in the Crescent Hill Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Adrian Library.

She departed this life Monday, March 2, 2009 at Research Medical Center, Kansas City, Missouri at the age of 76 years, 6 months and 1 day.

Cindy Warner brings law services to Adrian

Cindy Warner, of Warner Law, LLC out of Harrisonville, has set-up an office in Adrian, in the newly renovated McColloh Building at Missouri Highway 18 and McColloh Street. Currently, she is in the Adrian office on Fridays but is considering Thursdays instead. She has been in Adrian since November and has been practicing law since 2003.
Cindy offers her clients law services in the areas of real estate, estate planning, wills, trusts, traffic tickets, elder care, Medicaid planning, and business and farm law.
Casey's donates goods to Adrian Food Pantry
With the closing of Casey’s while a new building is being constructed, food, drinks and other items could not be saved until the store re-opens. Thanks to the generosity of a caring management team at Casey, the Adrian Food Pantry received their extras for local families in need. Giving the donation on behalf of everyone at Casey’s was District Manager Karoline Fitzpatrick, Area Supervisor Grant Dickinson and 2nd Assistant Manager Sharon Riggs. Bloodmobile coming to Adrian on March 10

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Adrian, Tuesday, March 10, from 1-6 p.m. at the Adrian Optimist Building. At the past bloodmobiles, our deferred donors are usually low in hematocrit. This is the percentage of your total blood volume that consist of oxygen-carrying red blood cells. To be accepted as a whole blood donor, your hematocrit must be at least 38 percent. In order for donors to keep this percent, they must increase their intake of iron-rich foods.

Reichert wins dance awards
Jordan Reichert, a sophomore at Adrian High School, recently competed in the Sophisticated Productions Regional Dance Competition at the Folly Theater in Kansas City, MO. Jordan performed a modern solo to “Honey” and was awarded 2nd place overall for this performance as well as being selected for a judges choice award entitled “Marvelous Movement”. She also performed a jazz character solo to “Taylor the Latte Boy” and was awarded another judges choice award for this solo entitled “Dancing Queen”.

A pizza luncheon kicked off a “29th” birthday celebration for Dale Bishop, owner of Computers 4 U in Adrian. Thanks to Dale’s wife Linda and his colleague Gwen, a few friends and customers shared in his special day. Blackhawks win 1st Round of District Tourney

The Adrian boys started their district tournament off on Monday with a game against the Osceola Indians. Adrian was ranked the number 1 seed in the tournament, while Osceola was ranked number 8. This game started out with everything going Adrian’s way and by the end of the first quarter Adrian had a huge lead, 36-8. The Blackhawks came out after the half and continued to outplay Osceola, going on to win 80-15.

Adrian boys took on the Miami Eagles last Friday night. Both teams came out playing well, with each team scoring often. By the end, the game had become a blowout with Adrian winning 69-35.
This win pushes Adrian’s record to 22 wins and 3 losses on the year. Adrian won the WEMO Conference this year with a 7-0 in conference record. Adrian Coach James Wheeler commented, “It was good to finish out the conference season strong. We hope to continue into the post season.”

Friday the Lady Blackhawks took on the Miami Eagles. Adrian came out and played an amazing game. The Lady Blackhawks won this one big, 93-18.
This win pushes the Blackhawks record to 23 wins and only 2 losses on the year. This win also gives Adrian second place in the WEMO Conference. This was a good game for Adrian to end the regular season on.

A pair of wins for the Blackhawks at Midway
Last Tuesday the Lady Blackhawks took on the Midway Vikings in another conference matchup. This game started very slow with neither team getting into double digits in the first quarter. Adrian was ahead after one, 8-4. The night only got better for the girls. Adrian outscored and outplayed Midway in this one, going on to win big, 48-13.
This win pushes Adrian’s record to 22 wins and 2 losses on the year. Adrian Coach Nathan Dingman commented, “We came out slow but hit our stride in the second and third quarters.”
Wanda Jean (Dirks) Johnson 1926 - 2009
Wanda Jean (Dirks) Johnson was born September 1, 1926 to Henry and Sadie Smith Dirks in Halstead, Kansas. On February 26, 2009 she peacefully passed away at Willow Lane Nursing Home in Butler, Missouri surrounded by her family, reaching the age of eighty-two years.

On the evening of February 16, 2009 Vivian Ruth Hooker passed away at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, MO at the age of 79. Vivian was born on August 30, 1929 to Robert and Louise (Goodwin) McAvoy in the small town of Trussville, Alabama.
Funeral services were held Friday, February 20, 2009 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian. Rev. Tim Redding officiated with burial in the Crescent Hill Cemetery.
