Lady Blackhawks defense takes charge on Senior Night
The Blackhawks continued WEMO Conference play last Friday with a game vs. the Rich Hill Tigers. This was the last home game of the year for the Blackhawks, and as is tradition in Adrian, it was senior night.
With emotions running high this was sure to be a good game. The girls game started first, and both teams came out sluggish. After one quarter of play Adrian was ahead, 14-8. Adrian really played well in the second half and went on to beat Rich Hill easily, 54-24.
Exciting win for Blackhawks

The Adrian Boys game turned out to be just as exciting. Adrian and Rich Hill both came out shooting the ball well. Adrian had a slight lead after the first quarter of play, 16-14. The Blackhawks went on to win this one big, 74-48.
This win pushes the Blackhawks record to an even 20 wins on the year with only 3 losses. Adrian Coach James Wheeler said, “The boys played really well. We had some good production from our bench. Our defense really did a nice job with a tough veteran Rich Hill team.”
Convincing win for Blackhawks

The boys game was not nearly as close of a game. Adrian came out and took it to the Bobcats, jumping out to an early first quarter lead, 20-9. This game quickly turned into a blowout. Adrian continued to roll through the second half with the younger guys getting lots of playing time. Adrian went on to win convincingly, 86-17.
This win moves the Blackhawks record to 19 wins and only 3 losses. Adrian Coach James Wheeler commented, “We are looking for a strong push to the end of the season. Each conference game is very important.”
20th victory for Lady Blackhawks

Last Tuesday the Adrian Blackhawks took on the Drexel Bobcats. The night started with the girls game. Drexel came out ready to go and Adrian fell behind early, 14-9. Adrian came back with a huge second quarter and by halftime had claimed the lead, 31-23. Adrian made a run in the fourth quarter and extended their lead. The Lady Blackhawks went on to win 59-44.
6th Grade Basketball Champs
The Adrian 6th grade basketball team had an undefeated season. They took third place in the Little League Cass-Midway Tournament. Longtime Adrian landmark sees new life

A long time Adrian landmark has undergone a lot of changes over the past few months. After standing pretty much idle for years, the building is seeing life once again, in a whole new way that reflects the changes in time.
The old building at 104 McColloh Street, referred to now as the McColloh Building, now houses an office for Warner Law, LLC and will soon be the home of Town and County Wireless, a business that will provide wireless, cell phone and satellite services for area residents.
George W. Bush impersonator to speak at Annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet
The Annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet will be held Friday, March 13th, 2009 at the Frontier Village. The WMAT&MA Ladies Auxiliary will be serving another fine meal. A mixer will begin at 6:30 p.m. with meal following at 7:00 p.m. This is a fun filled evening so any Chamber member, or anyone wishing to become a member, who would like to attend the banquet, may contact the Chamber office at 816-297-0004 or reply by email to e.scrogham@att.net. Adrian Optimist Oratorical Winners
The annual Optimist Club Oratorical Contest was held Sunday, February 22, 2009. The participants who competed include: Ashlee Smith, Leslie Cox, Joey Frazier, Cody Jones, Caitlin Kimminau, Melissa Davis, Austin Pitts, Josie Stone, Shelby Shannon and John Cameron. Winners selected were: First Place, Cody Jones; Second Place, John Cameron; Third Place, Shelby Shannon. The top two finishers move on to the next level of competition.

OATS, Inc. driver celebrated for 15 years of service
Elaine Engelhardt began driving for OATS on February 1, 1994. As a mother with three boys in school, she was searching for a position that would mesh with her schedule of motherhood. She saw the OATS ad in the paper, and thought this might be the perfect fit.
Tracy Walkup, Midwest Regional Director, says “Elaine always has such a positive attitude – you can really tell that she enjoys what she does, and cares about the people she serves.”
Adrian R-III Assistant Principal hired
The Adrian R-3 Board of Education met in special session, Wednesday, February 18, 2009, to discuss and review basic school finances, funding and procedures. In closed session, the Board voted to hire Dr. Carrie Eidson for a combined position as Director of Curriculum and A+ School Coordinator. The Board also voted to hire Don Lile as the Athletic Director and Assistant Junior High/High School Principal.

Earl Glenn Muiller 1928 - 2009
Earl Glenn Muiller, age 80, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at his home in Adrian, MO. Earl was born October 16, 1928 to Charles Frederick and Allie (McNutt) Muiller in Butler, MO.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 21, 2009, 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Adrian, MO with Rev. Bob Maffitt officiating. Military Honors Under the Auspices Of Golden Valley VFW Post 1894, Clinton, Missouri. Interment was in the Crescent Hill Cemetery.

The Adrian boys concluded their Midway Tournament action on Saturday against the Barstow Knights, fighting for first place. The game started out close with both teams playing well. Adrian made a run late in the game, getting within two, but they just could not pull off a victory. Barstow won, 65-61.

The Adrian boys took on the Archie Whirlwinds in the round two game of the tournament. Adrian came out and could not miss. The game was out of reach by the fourth quarter and Adrian went on to win, 75-43.
Adrian’s record improves to 18 wins and 2 losses after this game. Adrian Coach James Wheeler commented, “Our kids were ready to play. We shot the ball well. We also took care of the ball very well.”

Close game for Lady Blackhawks

Adrian took on the Crest Ridge Cougars in their second round of the Midway tournament. Adrian was the number one seed in the tournament, while Crest Ridge was the number four seed, so this was sure to be a good one. After three quarters Adrian had a slim lead, 35-34. Adrian pulled it together in the fourth quarter and went on to win 49-41.
Blowout for Blackhawks against KC Lutheran

The Adrian Boys kicked off WEMO tournament action last Tuesday against the KC Lutheran Knights. Adrian was the number two seed and KC Lutheran was the number seven seed. The Blackhawks won a blowout of 79-37.
This win pushes the Blackhawks record to 17 wins and 2 losses. Adrian Coach James Wheeler commented, “We shot the ball very well. We were also able to force a lot of turnovers.”

Soccer sign-ups for ages 4 to 18 years

Soccer comes to Adrian for the little leaguers, junior high and high schoolers! Sign-ups for the spring season are February 21 from 10am - 1pm in the Adrian R-III East Gym for players from Drexel, Archie and Adrian. Players are eligible to participate who are four-years old by the registration date through 12th grade in high school. New in 2009 for area soccer: teams are now forming for junior high and high school students who wish to play soccer! The registration fee is $40.00 for all players. Undefeated season
On Saturday, February 14th, Adrian’s 5th grade girls basketball team finished their regular season undefeated with an 8-0 record. Out with the old...and in with the new
Casey’s in Adrian will be closed on March 1 while a new store, with new and more accommodating gas facilities, is constructed. The new Casey’s should re-open in June or July of this year. All existing employees expect to return to work for a Grand Opening. “Come check out our Grand Opening,” said Assistant Manager Melissa Coday. “We’ll have subs, pizzas, hot food and donuts. The subs will be made fresh every day and they will be made-to-order.”
Bloodmobile coming to Adrian on March 10
The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Adrian on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 from 1-6 p.m. at the Adrian Optimist Building. There have been changes in some of the reasons you were deferred years ago. When you enter the bloodmobile you are asked to read a booklet of material. If you have not tried to donate blood lately you may not know these changes and when you read them you may see you are eligible to donate blood.

As a community service project, the Future Teachers of America (FTA) sponsored a 2-week food drive for the Adrian Community Food Bank. Sponsor Debbie Slattery, along with FTA members, encouraged elementary students to donate cans of food. The food drive was a tremendous success. Dustin Lee Craig, 22 years of age, passed away February 10, 2009 at the Bates County Memorial Hospital. He was born on May 13, 1987 at Clinton Memorial Hospital to Tom and Dena Craig. He is the father of four children, Kelsey, 3, Dakota, 2, Vince, 1, and Grace, 3 months.
Funeral services were held Friday, February 13, 2:00 p.m. at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian with Rev. Jack Baize officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler.
Contributions may be made to the trust fund for Dustin’s children.

Ruby Ernsbarger Downey, age 86, died January 7, 2009, at the Santa Anita Convalescent Home, Temple City, CA. She was a former resident of Monrovia, CA. She was born at Butler, MO June 12, 1922, to Arthur Clarence Ernsbarger and Hester Elizabeth Henry Ernsbarger.

VFW presentation to first responders

The Adrian City Council meeting began with a presentation by the VFW. Don Durbin of the local VFW post expressed appreciation to the city’s first responders for the excellent service they provide to the residents of Adrian. The VFW presented three Certificates of Appreciation: one to the Firefighters; one to the Firefighters and Police Department for emergency medical assistance, and one to the Police Department.
Dan Ortiz Named Optimist Student of the Month
Dan Ortiz was selected as the Adrian Optimist Student of the Month for January. Dan is a senior at Adrian R-III. He was crowned the AHS 2009 Courtwarming King and has served as Student Council Treasurer. Dan is a member of the track team and was a photographer for the yearbook during his sophomore year. He plans to major in Architectural Engineering at Kansas State University in the fall. Pictured is Dan receiving this well-deserved award. The Adrian boys started off courtwarming night a little sluggish. Adrian established control of the game and took it to the Greyhounds. The Blackhawks won a big courtwarming game, 82-65.

Saturday night was Courtwarming for the Adrian Blackhawks. Adrian took on the Windsor Greyhounds. The girls game was first and boy were they ready. They came out and could not miss. Shots were hit from anywhere on the floor, and by the end of the first quarter Adrian was ahead 30-5. In the second half, Adrian’s younger girls played, but they continued to take it to the Greyhounds. Adrian went on to win a blowout of 85-24.

The Adrian boys resumed conference play on Friday, taking on the Appleton City Bulldogs. The Blackhawks came out ready to play, and took a huge first quarter lead over the Bulldogs, 22-8. The younger players got to see a lot of time in the fourth quarter and Adrian went on to win a blowout, 74-47.

Adrian girls continue winning streak

Last Tuesday, the Adrian and Archie girls squared off in another conference match-up. Both teams played relatively close but at the end of one quarter the Blackhawks were up 10-7. Archie battled back in the fourth quarter but could not come up with enough, falling to the Blackhawks 51-42.
This moves Adrian’s record to an amazing 14 wins and 2 losses. Adrian Coach Nathan Dingman commented, “Close game at the half. The girls picked up their defense in the 3rd quarter.”

Joseph Ford a member of the Army National Guard and of the 229th Multifunctional Medical Battalion in Jefferson City, MO was promoted to the rank of Sergeant First Class on 8 February 2009. He is the son of Gary Ford and Patty Sieleman, both of Adrian. Joe lives in Pleasant Hill, MO with his wife Regina (Metcalf) and step-son Hayden Smith and is currently on active duty in Fort Leonard Wood, MO in support of the war on terrorism.

2009 R-III Olympic Awards Assembly
Every four years the students at Adrian Elementary compete in events that simulate Olympic competition. This year they competed in track, wrestling, simulated swimming, soccer, floor hockey, and whiffleball (simulated baseball and softball).
The students received gold, silver and/or bronze medals for their achievements. AHS seniors Tyler Tolle and Justine Enlow assisted Coach Terry Hubbard in presenting the medals to the young athletes.

State 4-H Teen Conference
In tough economic times, Missouri communities across the state benefit when their youth have leadership skills, healthy habits and a lot of class.
Bates County 4-H members Rachel Brown (Hudson Hustlers 4-H), Erin Armentrout (County Line 4-H), Jaclyn Crawford (Amsterdam 4-H), and Reba Colin (Hudson Hustlers 4-H) were among the 243 youth delegates to the 2009 Missouri 4-H Teen Conference, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, at Columbia’s Stoney Creek Inn.

FCCLA does well at STAR Event contest
The Adrian Chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) has had a busy beginning to the second semester. On January 21st three members, Haley Bass, Mackenzie Deal and Taylor Diehl along with their advisor, Mrs. Carr, traveled to La Monte High School for the Region 12 officer elections. Haley ran for and was elected as the region 12 president. Taylor and Mackenzie served as the Adrian FCCLA chapter voting delegates.
Selected to attend Missouri Fine Arts Academy
Makenzi Adams, daughter of Pete and Denise Adams, and Jordan Reichert, daughter of Kelly Reichert, have been accepted to attend the Missouri Fine Arts Academy (MFAA) at Missouri State University in Springfield. Makenzi will be majoring in the visual arts, and Jordan will be majoring in dance.

Vera Elizabeth West, age 89 of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. She was born October 31, 1919 to Herman and Ana Kelly Mager in Amoret, Missouri.
Memorial services were 2 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2009 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Butler, Missouri with George Brown officiating. Contributions may be made to World Wide Preaching Work of Jehovah¹s Witnesses or local Kingdom Hall.

Vonna Nadine (Moles) Smiley, 79, Woodstock, GA, formerly of Adrian, MO died Thursday, January 29, 2009 at her home in Georgia. Vonna was born April 21, 1929 in Adrian, MO, the daughter of Otha Cyril and Mabel Lois (Addleman) Moles. She married Oren Thomas Smiley on December 30, 1971 in Commerce City, CO.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, Missouri. Rev. Dick Pierson of the Butler Presbyterian Church, Butler, officiated. Interment was in the Crescent Hill Cemetery.

Chester L. (Pat) Patterson, age 85, Lee’s Summit, Missouri, passed away February 1, 2009. Funeral services were held at the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee’s Summit, on February 4 at 1:00 p.m.

George Andrew Gilmore, 85, Adrian, MO, formerly of Milo, MO, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at St. Joseph Medical Center, Kansas City, MO, following a sudden illness. She was born March 26, 1923 in Milo, MO to Reuben Andrew Gilmore and Harriet Marie Fenton Gilmore. He married Mary L. Wells on June 9, 1964 in Milo, MO and she survives of the home in Adrian, MO.
The family received friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO and closed with Military Rites at 11:00 a.m.

Martial Arts tournament brings hundreds to Adrian
“The ground shook on Saturday, January 31, 2009, in Adrian!” exclaimed Mike Kreitler. “It could be felt and heard all over the midwest as the Midwest Open Martial Arts Tournament was held at Adrian High School. It set attendance records for both spectators and competitors. This event was first class all the way.”
Ebay Today! and AVC Recovery Systems now open on Main Street
Doug and Nancy Mager, who recently moved to Adrian with their sons Sam, 10, and Jacob, 7, have opened Ebay ToDay! and AVC Recovery Systems at 145 E. Main Street. The two new businesses are now open, and a grand opening is coming soon.
Ebay ToDay! is an ebay drop-off store where people can drop off items to sell on ebay.
AVC Recovery Systems is a 5-year old company that demanufactures and recycles electronic equipment of all kinds. Computers, cell phones, I.T. equipment, communication gear and more find new life instead of being tossed in the landfills.

Project Prom is off and running
Adrian’s Project Prom committee is off and running with a very special upcoming fundraising event planned. The first annual Adrian Project Prom basketball tournament is set for the weekend of March 13, 14 and 15. The tournament will be held at Adrian High School and will accommodate both girls and boys teams with 4th, 5th and 6th grade divisions for each. Medals will be awarded to each individual player for teams placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The entry fee is $120.00 per team and teams are welcome from any and all surrounding towns so spread the word.
R-III Quiz Bowl Team takes first at Butler
The Adrian R-III Varsity Quiz Bowl Team took first place at the Butler High School Invitational last Thursday, January 22, 2009. High school students from Adrian, Butler, Appleton City and Sherwood participated in the meet. Peace, Love & PTO
Our February meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday, February 10th at 7:00 p.m. We will meet in the school library. Please join us!
Preparations are underway for Peace, Love & PTO as elementary kids are invited for a “fun night” scheduled for Saturday, April 25th. If you would like to assist us in the planning of this event, please attend the February 10th meeting.
The Elementary Valentine’s are scheduled for next Friday, February 13th at 2:00 p.m. Please contact your Head Room Parent(s) if you would like to help and/or contribute.
