Bates County to honor 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry and the Skirmish at Island Mound

Bates County is host to one of the most historic battles in Civil War history and commemorates the first military engagement by Colored Troops with a special monument dedication. The dedication and unveiling of the memorial statue on the Courthouse Square will commemorate the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry. Included within their ranks was Cherokee Indian, John Six-Killer. In October 1862 these men courageously fought and died while engaging the Missouri Confederate guerrillas in the Skirmish at Island Mound in Bates County.

R-3 Board to ask City for possible street direction changes around school

The Adrian R-3 Board of Education met in regular session, Thursday September 18, 2008. The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m., in the Conference Room by President Jay Bagby. Board members present besides Bagby were: Steve Lewis, Tim Lovejoy, Jim Tenholder, Gary Tolle and Tom Underwood. Absent, Jacque Underwood.
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and all visitors were welcomed.

Police officers investigate case of suspected stalking

Adrian Police officers, this past week, have responded to two false alarms at a home and a business, investigated a case of suspected stalking and other cases involving disturbances and thefts. Officers also had cases involving juveniles, including one involving a missing four year old child.
Monday, September 15, Officer Don Sellers served a warrant in the area of Business 71 Highway and Hazel Street. A female suspect was arrested on a warrant for passing bad checks in Bates County. She was transported to the Bates County Jail where she bonded out and was given a new court date.

Adrian Lady Blackhawks Volleyball Action

The Adrian Lady Blackhawks were in action last Tuesday night at Butler. Adrian fell to the Lady Bears in two games, 12-25 and 13-25.
On Thursday night the Lady Blackhawks hosted the Ballard Lady Bulldogs and were able to post a two game victory, 25-7 and 25-21.

Blackhawks take on El Dorado Springs

Adrian traveled to El Dorado Springs last Friday night to take on the Bulldogs. The Blackhawks rushed for 276 yards and passed for 98 to post a 27-6 victory as they spoiled the Bulldogs Homecoming. Adrian has a record of 3 and 1 and will host Rich Hill this Friday night for their first WEMO Conference game.
In the first quarter Luke Hough scored on a 1 yard run. The kick by Tyler Tolle was good as Adrian led 7-0.

Larry Damon Shannon, age 69 of Cleveland, Missouri died Friday, September 19, 2008 at Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri as the result of a stroke. Funeral services were 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Pastor Steve Koberlein officiating and Dr. Barth Smith assisting. Burial was in West Point Cemetery, Amsterdam, Missouri. Contributions, Kansas City Hospice House, West Point Cemetery, Merwin Christian Church or Westline Christian Church.

Pamela Jo (Highfill) Jenkins 1957 - 2008

Pamela Jo (Highfill) Jenkins passed away at her home in Drexel, MO and left this world to be with her Lord and children on September 18, 2008. Arrangements were under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home of Adrian.

Catherine Edna Stewart, 90, Archie, MO, died Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at Heartland of Willow Lane in Butler, MO. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Archie, officiated by Rev. Jeff Paul. Arrangements were under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home, Archie, MO.

Velma M. Murray, 92, Archie, MO, died Monday, September 15, 2008 at Cass Medical Center in Harrisonville. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the Atkinson Chapel in Archie, MO, officiated by Rev. Joe Crook, Archie, MO.

Adrian Holds 9/11 Ceremony

“What a night! Awesome!” exclaimed Adrian Fire Chief, Gary Dizney. “I think it all went very well and we thank everyone for attending the ceremony and for helping to make it all we intended it to be…a remembrance for those who sacrificed so much.”

Forty-three units collected during Bloodmobile

Forty-seven donors showed up to donate blood at the American Red Cross Bloodmobile on Tuesday, September 9th, at the Adrian Optimist Building. Forty-three good units of blood was received. Four donors were deferred for minor reasons. There were several new donors for this area and we are always happy to see them and hope they will return on November 4th.

Adrian police assists in forgery investigation

Adrian police officers made the usual traffic stops and also investigated loud music complaints this past week. Officers also assisted the Butler Police Department in a forgery investigation. The Adrian Police Department was among many police, fire and other emergency services personnel who took part in the special Nine Eleven processional and memorial service held on Patriots Day, Thursday, September 11.

Bates County men injured

Two men, including one from Adrian, were injured in a two vehicle accident in Bates County, Friday, September 12, 2008. The accident occurred at 9:50 p.m., on southbound U.S. 71 Highway, one half mile south of Missouri Highway 18.

Blackhawks win home opener 47-25 against Sherwood

The Adrian Blackhawks hosted the Sherwood Marksmen in their 2008 home opener last Friday night. The threatening weather held off as it turned out to be a great night for football as the home team defeated the Marksmen 47-25.

Ellen Marie Barnhart Young, age 65 of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri after an extended illness. She was born March 24, 1943 to James Murel and Mary Ellen Hargrave Barnhart in Clinton, Missouri.

Dorothy May Bennet, age 46 of Butler, Missouri died Sunday, September 7, 2008 at her home in Butler. She was born July 3, 1962 to Clarence and Harriet Greenwood Bledsoe in Clinton, Missouri.

New water plant nearing completion

This month’s City Council meeting was focused on maximizing services to Adrian residents while trying to hold down spending. Mayor Ray Cusumano presided over the September 8 meeting; Aldermen Bruce Scarborough, Dennis Kooker, Mike Lemon, and Larry Ritter were in attendance.
Adrian’s new fire truck arrived last Friday. The Fire Department is finishing the preparation that must occur before the truck can be placed in service. The truck will participate in the 9-11 procession, so Adrian residents can view their newest safety equipment.

Adrian officers investigate several disturbances

Adrian Police officers have investigated several disturbances, two of which involved juveniles and officers have assisted other agencies and worked the usual traffic related incidents this past week.
Tuesday September 2, Officer Hershel Cole responded to First and Virginia, to investigate a disturbance. A female at the location claimed she had been assaulted. The two alleged suspects and a witness denied any assault had occurred. The investigation is continuing and is to be referred to the prosecuting attorney’s office.

PWSD #5 discusses purchase of new meter equipment

Public Water District #5 met Monday, September 2, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Members present were Dale VanSlyke, Melvin Fairman, Steve Smith, John McCulley, and Bill Weeks. Others present were Richard Griffith, Steve Lewis, and Kim Hubbard.
The meeting was called to order by President Dale VanSlyke. A motion was made by Director Fairman, seconded by Director Weeks and approved by all present to approve the minutes of the August 4, 2008 meeting.

New Adrian Animal Control Officer hired

Cora Adams has been hired by the City of Adrian, as the new Animal Control Officer. The position is part-time and Cora is on call. She began working on Friday, August 29.
Her duties consist of enforcing the City’s animal control ordinances and dealing with animal control issues such as dog bites, picking up dogs or other animals running at large and investigating cases of animal abuse or neglect.

Special Olympics Missouri and Missouri Law Enforcement Agencies are hosting the 2008 annual Dodge Raffle Fundraiser! The 2008 South 71 Little League Football Jamboree was held Saturday, September 6 at the Wayne C. Davis Little League Field in Adrian.

Blackhawks fall hard at Galena, KS

The Adrian Blackhawks were on the road again as they made the trip to Galena, Kansas to take on the Bulldogs. This was unfamiliar territory to Adrian and they found their opponents big and fast. This combination proved fatal to the Blackhawks as they were defeated by their host 51 to 14.
In the first quarter of play Galena hit paydirt first on a 38 yard run by Chase Keyser. The extra point kick was good with the Bulldogs leading 7-0 with 11:00 showing on the clock.

Lady Blackhawks begin season with double dual

The Adrian Lady Blackhawks participated in a double dual last Thursday, September 4 at Miami. Their first match was against the Drexel Lady Bobcats. In the first game Adrian defeated Drexel 25-22. Drexel came back in the second and defeated the Blackhawks 23-25 to send it to a third game. Adrian lost 9-15. Coach Carver commented, “We had a very rough start to this game and never picked it up. I saw some good things, but also saw our weaknesses.”

Underwood accepted to Cottey College

Jennifer Underwood, daughter of Jacqueline and James Underwood of Adrian, Missouri, has been accepted for admission to Cottey College for the fall 2008 semester. She graduated from Adrian High School, and plans to major in physical therapy.

Sherrill Laurine Thomas 1938 - 2008

Sherrill Laurine Thomas Stalnaker went to be with her heavenly father on September 6, 2008 due to complications associated with Lupus and severe heart disease. Cremation. A Memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 12, 2008 at the Dickey Funeral Home, 2401 E. Mechanic Street, Harrisonville, Mo. Family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Friday at Dickey Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions may be made to the Lupus Foundation or to the American Heart Association.

Adrian Fire Department Boot Block raises $3,815 for MDA

The Adrian Fire Department’s annual Boot Block for Muscular Dystrophy went well with contributions totaling $3815. The amount collected this year exceeded last year by over $100, in spite of the current high gas prices and other costs facing people.
Fire Chief Gary Dizney said he and the crew had a lot of fun, both at the boot block and at the AmeriStar Casino, where the Kansas City area telethon for Muscular Dystrophy was held, and where the local fire fighters helped work the phone lines and presented the check for the collected amount of donations.

Memorial ceremony to be held in remembrance of September 11, 2001

So no one forgets the great loss of life and the sacrifices made by emergency personnel, the Adrian Fire Department is once again hosting a special memorial procession and ceremony to remember those, civilians, fire fighters, police and other emergency service members who were murdered by terrorists on September 11, 2001. The Adrian memorial procession will be held the evening of Thursday September 11, 2008. The memorial service also recognizes those who work so selflessly, to protect America’s precious freedom today; the members of the United States Military Services.

Blackhawks post 18-8 victory over Butler Bears

The Adrian Blackhawks football team opened their 2008 season on the road as they traveled to Butler to take on the Butler Bears last Friday night, August 29. The Blackhawks posted an 18-8 victory over the Bears.
In the first quarter Luke Hough made a tackle in the end zone for a safety and the quarter ended 2 to 0. With 6:30 remaining in the 2nd quarter, Erik White pulled down a 6 yard pass from Kyle Knuth to score a touchdown. The point after was no good and Adrian went into halftime leading 8 to 0.

Geraldine “Jerry” Mae Bowlin, age 82 of Lee’s Summit, Missouri died Friday, August 29, 2008 at the home of her granddaughter, Tricia Jarboe and husband Steve in Lee’s Summit. She was born October 9, 1925 to Walter and Bertha Mae Foster Miller in Kansas City, Missouri.
