Osage Valley Electric Coop celebrates 70th annual meeting
Osage Valley Electric Cooperative celebrated 70 years of providing electricity to the rural areas of West Central Missouri. The annual meeting was held on Thursday, August 14th at the Benson Center in Clinton, Missouri with a crowd of over 500 members registered for the meeting. One highlight this year was an appearance by the Touchstone Energy Hot Air Balloon. The guest speaker for the evening was nationally known energy efficiency expert, Doug Rye.

Bloodmobile in Adrian September 9
The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Adrian at the Optimist Building on September 9 from 1-6 p.m.
Adrian Fire Department annual Boot Block set for this weekend
The Adrian Fire Department responded to 42 calls, from July 1 to Monday morning, August 25, 2008. The calls ranged from gas odor investigations, motor vehicle accidents, mutual aid assists with other departments, medical calls and fire calls within the department’s coverage area. Butler Fire responded with Adrian on fire calls involving structures.
Rash of bicycle thefts reported in Adrian
Adrian Police have investigated two separate, alleged, stalking incidents, made an arrest for drug paraphernalia, investigated a minor motor vehicle accident and assisted or attempted to assist on two separate medical calls and an item was returned to the owner.
Chief Charles Chapman said there have been a rash of bicycle thefts in the city and he and officers have recovered several bikes that had been stolen. A suspect has been questioned regarding the thefts.

The Adrian Lady Blackhawks held a Hairspray scrimmage game Monday night in preparation for the 2008 season which begins Tuesday, September 2 with a Junior Varsity double duel at home against Miami and Archie. The varsity begins their season Thursday, September 4 in a double duel with Drexel and Miami at Miami.

T. Juanita Allison, 90, Adrian, MO, passed away Sunday, August 24, 2008 at the Adrian Manor Nursing Home in Adrian. Juanita was born August 22, 1918 in Cresson, Texas, to Porter and Osie (Ballow) Tennison. She married Porter Allison and moved to the Adrian area in 1936.

John Albert Keel Poland, age 93 of Butler, Missouri died Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. He was born June 1, 1915 in Hillsboro, Illinois to Thomas Carter and Pruda Hunter Keel.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2008 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Rev. James Stanfield-Myers officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri. Contribution may be made to the Heartland Hospice.

Virginia Wackerman, 79, of Sweet Springs, MO died Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at University Hospital & Clinics in Columbia, MO.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 23, 2008 at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Sweet Springs with William W. Harlow officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Private family burial will be in Crescent Hill Cemetery in Adrian, MO. Memorials may be made to I-70 Medical Center.
New Adrian R-3 High School addition is ready
The Adrian School held an Open House and tour of the new facilities Monday evening, August 18, 2008. A large crowd gathered in the new Commons area, to listen to a number of dignitaries prior to the tours. Those guest speakers included new superintendent, Dr. Kirk Eidson, School Board President Jay Bagby, former superintendent Doug Hedrick, State Representative, Barney Fisher and several others from the architecture firm and construction company involved in the project.
R-3 Board awards contract for cement and asphalt work
The Adrian R-3 Board of Education met in special session, Tuesday, August 12, 2008, to discuss and choose from the bids received for cement and asphalt work for field events at the Sports Complex.
Investigation continues in Yoss Thriftway break in
Adrian Police investigated cases of burglary, theft and child endangerment this past week and officers arrested two suspects in separate cases. Chief Charles Chapman also reminds drivers that school is beginning this week, on Thursday, August 21. Drivers need to be watchful of children going to and from school. Mary Katherine Maki, age 57 of Pleasanton, Kansas died Sunday, August 3, 2008 at St. John's Medical Center in Joplin, Missouri. She was born September 17, 1950 to Bob and Mary South Williams in Sulphur Springs, Texas.

Sudie Elizabeth O'Rourke, age 91, of Smithville, Missouri formerly of Butler, Missouri died Friday, August 8, 2008 at the Golden Living Center in Smithville. She was born July 17, 1917 to Leroy and Esta Callahan Poindexter in Johnstown, Missouri.

The gas leak that wasn’t . . .
“There was no gas leak,” said Atmos spokesman, Jim Bartling. “There was no danger to anyone at anytime.”
Last week’s event in which it was first thought to have been a gas leak, somewhere in Adrian that shut down natural gas service to customers, turned out to not be a leak at all.
Atmos was doing routine maintenance on the line when a valve locked up in the regulating station. That stopped the flow of gas through the line, resulting in the shutting off of gas to Atmos customers.
Police respond to burglary at Adrian R-3 old cafeteria
Adrian Police have responded to calls this past week which have involved theft, burglary, a magazine salesman and a dispute between neighbors, along with the normal traffic type incidents.
Monday, August 4, Officer Hershel Cole responded to the second block on West Sixth Street on a report of a theft. Someone stole a blue Mongoose bicycle from a residence in that area.
Thursday, August 7, Officer Cole responded to the 100 block of East Eighth Street, on a report of a dispute between neighbors where verbal threats were being made. A complaint was taken and an ex-parte’ was to be filed.
City approves purchase of fire truck
The Adrian City Council approved the purchase of a fire truck for the city at its regularly scheduled meeting August 11. The City Council also voted to restore the city taxi’s fare of 35 cents for a one-way trip.
Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Mayor Ray Cusumano called the meeting to order at 7:00. Council members present were Larry Ritter, Mike Lemon, Dennis Kooker, and Bruce Scarborough.
Communications to end between PWD#5 and City of Adrian if no agreement is met
Public Water District #5 of Bates County met Monday, August 4, 2008. Members present were Dale VanSlyke, Melvin Fairman, Steve Smith, John McCulley, and Bill Weeks. Others present were Richard Griffith, Steve Lewis, Kim Hubbard, and Tom Addington.
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Dale VanSlyke.
A motion was made by Director VanSlyke, seconded by Director Fairman and approved by all present to approve the minutes of July 7, 2008 meeting.
Open House for new R-III facility
The Adrian R-III School District is providing an opportunity for all patrons to view the new high school facilities at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, August 18. There will be a brief ceremony at 6:30 in the Commons Area, followed by an opportunity to tour the building. Refreshments will be provided in the Commons Area. The school district is very proud of this modern high school and we hope that you will come and see the great facilities that your tax dollars are funding for the students in the Adrian R-III School District.

Practice for the high school fall sports season kicked off in Adrian early Monday morning. Forty-two boys started their first football practice of the year at 12:01 in front of a large crowd at the sports complex. Twenty-four girls hit the court at the same time in the high school gym for volleyball practice.

New Elementary Principal for Adrian R-3
“I got into education because I wanted to teach Physical Education and to coach basketball. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in K through 12 teaching first, thinking I’d get into coaching from there,” said Brian Borgmeyer. “But, I found I really liked working with the elementary aged kids best. I got out of the coaching area but I still wanted to work in a leadership role, so I went for my administrative degree. This is my first year as an elementary principal.”
Adrian Police respond to a case of trespassing
Adrian Police responded to a case of trespassing and one that involved ill-tempered race fans. An Adrian officer also responded to a residence on a medical assist call. Chief Charles Chapman asks citizens to watch out for their elderly family members and elderly friends and neighbors during the hot summer weather.
Thursday July 31, Officer Stuart Solomon was called to the 100 block of west Sixth Street to assist emergency personnel on a medical call at a residence.

School bells to ring soon for area schools
In just two or three weeks, depending on the district, area schools will be open and ready to begin the 2008-09 school year. As some school personnel are currently working on summer schedules or are on vacations, important school information is not readily available now, but will be within the next week. This week, Adrian and Miami school information is ready.

The Adrian Senior League girls softball team challenged the Adrian Senior League boys baseball team to a softball game on Friday evening, August 1. The Lions Club hosted a concession stand and generously donated all proceeds to the fund to ‘Help Ronnie Wrestle Cancer’. Ronnie has played a big part in the little league softball and baseball programs at Adrian and the kids enjoyed playing a special game for him. Leo F. Alexander, 93, formerly of Drexel, MO., passed away Saturday, August 2, 2008, at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler, MO.
Leo was born September 20, 1914 in Aurora, MO., the son of Ollie Clay and Amanda (Applegate) Alexander. He was united in marriage to Jessie Durrell Alexander on April 21, 1943 in Merwin, MO.
Visitation will be Wednesday, August 6, 2008, from 10-11am at Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel, with a funeral service at 11. Burial will follow in Sharon Cemetery, Drexel. Memorial contributions in Leo’s memory are suggested to Heartland Hospice, in care of the funeral home.

Jackie “Jack” Vance Talley, 72, Adrian, MO died Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at his home in Adrian. Jack was born June 20th, 1936 in Bates County, MO, the son of Vance and Minnie (McCabe) Talley. He was a lifelong Bates County, MO area resident.
A memorial visitation was held Thursday, July 31, 2008, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian. Contributions may be made to the Adrian Athletic Fund for baseball and football in his memory. Cremation. Arrangements were under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home of Adrian.
