Retirement reception

A retirement reception was held for Wallace Henrickson, Adrian R-3 Elementary Principal and Doug Hedrick, Adrian R-3 Superintendent on Thursday, May 22.

Many Adrian students, faculty and friends attended the reception with well-wishes for the Adrian administrators.

Barney Fisher, 125th District Representative, presented Henrickson and Hedrick with a proclamation plaque for their many years of service in education.

Theft and vandalism may be connected

Adrian Police Officers responded to several theft and vandalism calls last week, some of which may be connected to a suspect held in custody. Chief Chapman also has a warning for bicyclists and skateboarders on Main Street. Thursday, May 22, at 7:30 a.m., Chief Chapman was contacted by Randy Wimsatt about a fire in an unoccupied trailer at Rudy’s Trailer Park. Adrian Fire Department, Bates County Sheriff’s Department and the Missouri Fire Marshall also responded. According to Chapman, the cause of the fire was found to be arson.

25th Wedding Anniversary -- Petty

James Lowell Bennett 1917-2008

James Lowell Bennett, born October 9, 1917, in Long Lane, Missouri, to Benjamin H. and Nora Buchanan Bennett, peacefully entered into rest on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at Oakridge of Plattsburg in Plattsburg, Missouri. Services were held Saturday, May 24, at 2 p.m. at Atkinson Chapel in Adrian, Missouri with burial at Crescent Hill Cemetery. Reverend Len Redding officiated the services. Police chief warns citizens about ATV use in City

Adrian Chief of Police Charles Chapman issued a statement this week about the use of ATVs and 4x4s at the City Park.

“Recently, we have been making contact with individuals that are going behind the City Lake with pickups to four-wheel and make deep ruts,” Chapman explained. “Each person we’ve contacted stated they were ‘just fishing’. From now on, if anyone is caught stuck behind City Lake, or found spinning tires, we will deem that destruction of property. You will be arrested, and your vehicle will be towed. So do not use City property for ATVs or 4x4s.”

Optimist Teachers and Student of the Year

The Adrian Optimist Club presented its annual Teacher and Student of the Year awards at Adrian R-3. The High School Teacher of the Year award went to David Main; Elementary Teacher of the Year to Matt Cochran; and Student of the Year to Brittany Clark.

Spring Sports Reception

The Adrian R-3 Spring Sports Athletic Reception was held Wednesday, May 14. Athletes were recognized for baseball and softball and track. Also being presented were the end of the year special awards. The prestigious Blackhawk Pride Award was presented by Principal Chris Shanks. Receiving the award was Tyler Lincoln and Ashley Hontz. Athletic Director George Bruto then presented the Scholastic Athlete Award to Megan Lewis and Kyle Knuth. To end the awards ceremony, the top athletes for 2007-2008 were recognized.

New Arrival -- Jacobs

Joey Jacobs would like to announce the arrival of his brother, Bryson Allen, born May 6, 2008 at 7:15 a.m. Bryson was born at St. Luke’s Hospital weighing 6 lbs. 12 ozs., 19 1/4” long.

Parents are Brad and Jill Jacobs. Grandparents are Steve and Linda Oldfield, Joe and Vicki Jacobs. Great grandparents are Lila Gunn, Bob Oldfield, J. E. and Ellen Hartman and Margie Hartman.

Charles Raynor Seelinger 1939-2008

Charles Raynor Seelinger, age 68, formerly of Butler and Adrian, died Thursday, May 15, 2008 at this home in San Diego, California. A memorial service will be held June 14 in San Diego. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the American Lung Association.

2008 Adrian R-3 Valedictorian and Salutatorian

Matthew Dickerson was named as the Valedictorian for the 2008 graduating class of Adrian R-III. Matthew is the son of Tim and Julie Dickerson. He plans to attend Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly the University of Missouri-Rolla). Kirsti Miller was named the Salutatorian of the 2008 graduating class. Kirsti is the daughter of John and Jennifer Miller. She plans to attend Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri. Commencement exercises will be held Sunday afternoon, May 18, at 2:30 p.m. at the Adrian Sports Complex.

Council hears water complaints

The Adrian Board of Aldermen met in regular session on Monday, May 12 at 7 p.m. at Adrian’s City Hall. Approximately thirty visitors were present at the meeting, most of whom were concerned about the amount of their water bills in the last month.

Blackhawks split with Butler in double header

The Adrian Blackhawks baseball team hosted the Butler Bears in a double header Tuesday, May 6. In the first game of the evening, Adrian could not get anything going and fell to the Bears 10 to 0. Andrew Underwood was the losing pitcher. He struck out 3. Kyle Knuth had the lone hit of the game with a single. He also had one stolen base. On Saturday, May 10 the Blackhawks traveled to Kansas City to take on the Barstow Knights. Adrian was defeated 5 to 1. Kyle Knuth was the losing pitcher. He pitched 7 innings, striking out 2.

Lady Blachawks split double header

The Adrian Lady Blackhawks softball team hosted the Butler Lady Bears in a double header Tuesday, May 6. In game one, the Lady Blackhawks lost to their opponent 2 to 1. Jennifer Underwood was the losing pitcher. She pitched 6 innings, striking out 10. In game two, the Lady Blackhawks defeated Butler 1 to 0. Jennifer Underwood was the winning pitcher. She pitched 5 innings, striking out 6.

Blackhawk tracksters at Sectionals

Five members of the Adrian Blackhawks track teams participated in the Class 2 Sectionals Saturday, May 10 at Cass-Midway. They were Russell Hahs, Matthew Dickerson, Wyatt Jackson, Olivia Case and Bailey Carroll.

It's A Boy!

He’s finally here and we’re grandparents. Bryson Allen Jacobs was born Tuesday morning at 7:15. He weighed 6 lbs. 12 ozs. and was 19 1/4 inches long. And he looks like his dad. I can’t begin to tell you how it felt the first time I saw him. It was a special day for me and Linda. Now I can’t wait to take him hunting!

Casino Night raises $23,000 for Center

Over $23,000 was raised to benefit the Bates County Children’s Center at the Casino Night on Saturday, May 3. Over 500 people attended the event, which was sponsored by the Adrian Optimists, Beta Sigma Phi sorority and the Children’s Center committee and held in the Adrian Optimist Community Building.

High winds cause damage in Adrian

This tree, in the 200 block of East Sixth Street, was split in two directions Friday afternoon, May 2, 2008, as high winds blew all day. The north branch of the trunk fell on a carport and the south branch fell in the street, blocking traffic. City of Adrian employees responded within a few minutes to clear away the debris.

Lions Club broom sale May 12

As the Adrian Lions Club prepares for its annual broom sale, Pete Hill, Lions club member for over fifty years, reflected on the event.

“In 1950, the broom sale was our only fund raiser,” Hill said. “We used to bring in a truck full of brooms and park on Main Street on a Saturday. People used to come to town on Saturday to buy things, and we would sell to them from the truck.”

Three Blackhawks qualify at district track meet

On Saturday, May 3rd, the Blackhawks boys track team traveled to Cass Midway to participate in the District track meet. The top four places move on to sectionals next Saturday. The boys placed ninth out of 15 teams with 35 1/2 points. Russell Hahs, Wyatt Jackson and Matthew Dickerson will be advancing to sectionals. Coach Cochran said, “We did as well as I could expect today. We are still injured in a few areas. I think our younger guys got discouraged, but they have to remember they are running against seniors. Give them a couple of years, and it will be their turn.

WEMO Conference Track

The Adrian Blackhawks boys track team participated in the WEMO Conference track meet Tuesday, April 29 at Cass Midway. The boys took fourth place with a total of 78 1/2 points. Coach Cochran commented, “We had 11 personal bests today which I am happy with. We had three people injured who could not run and another who was injured while running. We gave up about 25 points due to injuries. We ran well considering. We are a young team and I look for better things next year. I was really proud of the kids today.”

The Lady Blackhawks took 2nd with 98 points.

Blackhawks defeat Osceola

Thursday, May 1 the Adrian Blackhawks baseball team hosted the Hume Hornets. It was a tough night for the Blackhawks as they fell 3-0. Andrew Underwood was the losing pitcher. He went 7 innings, striking out 9. Coach Dingman commented, “We could not get the bat on the ball.”

Softball takes two

On Thursday, May 1, Adrian softball traveled to Jasper and defeated the Lady Eagles 6 to 3. Jennifer Underwood was the winning pitcher. She went 7 innings, striking out 7. Coach Hubbard commented, “We did a better job on defense with only 2 errors. Good outing for us all around.

The JV won their contest 8-2. Jessica Sweeten had a home run in the JV contest. Makenzie Adams, Cara Stark and Megan Lewis each pitched one inning.

40th Wedding Anniversary -- Morrow
