Absentee voting

The Bates County Clerk’s office will be open on Saturday, April 5th from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon for the purpose of absentee voting.

Candidates answer questions

On April 8, voters will head to the polls in local elections to choose the candidate who best represents their views on school boards, city councils and hospital boards and will vote in a special election regarding water supply.

Board accepts resignation of principal

The Adrian R-3 Board of Education met in regular session on Thursday, March 20, 2008. The meeting was called to order in the Conference Room at 7 p.m. by board president Jacque Underwood. Other board members present were Jay Bagby, Jim Tenholder, Steve Lewis and Gary Tolle. Absent were Jim Ferguson and Vanessa Tallman.The board voted to accept the resignation of Wallace Henrickson, who is retiring. The board voted to accept the resignation of George Bruto as teacher. The board voted to hire Tyson Basore as teacher.

City of Archie under boil order

Residents of the City of Archie are under a mandatory water boil order that began Friday, March 21 and will continue for a least ten days. The boil order was placed into effect by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources after it was discovered that the concrete walls of the secondary settling basin at the Archie water treatment plant have deteriorated so much as to allow water to run over the top of the basin during the water treatment operations. The DNR ordered the basin drained and repairs be made immediately.

Narcotics investigation turned over to Sheriff

On Thursday, March 20, beginning around 9 p.m., Officer Sellers responded to the 200 Block of Woodstock in the trailer park for a narcotics investigation and possible chemical contamination. The case was turned over to the Bates County Sheriff’s Office and was still under investigation by that agency at press time.

Woman claims she was abducted from Adrian

On Friday afternoon, March 21, Henry County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to investigate the report of a partially-clothed female lying alongside the road on State Route RA, south of 18 Highway.

Fire at Adrian Manor

The Adrian Fire Department responded to the Adrian Manor on Wednesday evening, March 19, on a report of smoke in the area of the lobby and dining room. When the firefighters arrived, they saw smoke pouring from a vent, but no visible flames.

After gaining quick access to the roof, the cause of the smoke was discovered to be an overheated motor in one of the rooftop heating units. Electrical wiring had melted and caused the unit breaker to shut down.

Track at UCM Relays

The Adrian High School boys and girls track teams traveled to the University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg to participate in the Indoor Relays on Tuesday, March 18. Coach Matt Cochran commented, “We didn’t take the whole team. For their first meet of the year I thought they performed pretty well. There were about 25 teams at the meet and about 50 competitors in each event. The competition was pretty good for them. This was our first indoor meet, so it was different for them. Three of the four people we brought took home medals. Our first team meet is at Archie on March 25.

Waunita Needles

Waunita Needles, 90, passed away March 24, 2008 at the New Mark Care Center in Kansas City, Missouri. She was a resident of Adrian for forty years. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nita and Bill Bacon, of Yorba Linda, California. Services were held Wednesday, March 26 at Park Lawn Chapel in Kansas City, Missouri. Visitation was at 2 p.m. and services at 3 p.m.

Carl Smith 1932-2008

Carl Smith, 76, Adrian, MO, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2008 in Adrian. Graveside services were held Saturday, March 22, 2008, 1:00 p.m. at the Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian. Contributions may be made to the charity of choice. Arrangements were under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Adrian, MO.

Hazel E. Hooper 1912-2008

Hazel E. Hooper, 95, Adrian, Missouri, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2008 in Adrian. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 24, 2008 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian, Missouri. Visitation was Monday also, with burial in Crescent Hill Cemetery. Contributions to the Adrian United Methodist Church. Arrangements by the Atkinson Funeral Home, Adrian.

Finley Edgar Greer 1916-2008

Finley Edgar Greer, 92, went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 23, 2008 at Bates County Memorial Hospital. Services were held Tuesday, March 25, 10:00 a.m. at the Victory Assembly of God Church. Burial was in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian. Contributions may be made to the Victory Assembly of God Church.

Nellie May Epperson 1914-2008

Nellie May Epperson, 94, of Mission, Kansas passed away Monday, March 10, 2008. Funeral services were Thursday, March 13 at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. Visitation was from 12 to 1 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made to Roeland Park United Methodist Church.

Bonnie Alice Crowder, age 88 of Independence, Missouri died Friday, March 14, 2008 at Golden Living Nursing Home in Independence. Nora Isabelle Van Matre Downey passed away at North Kansas City Hospital on Monday, March 17, 2008 at the age of 92 years after a short illness. Aubrey Brooks Case 1910-2008

At 98 years of age, Aubrey Brooks Case left his earthly home in Raymore, MO on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 to join the myriad family and friends who were welcomed into that heavenly home prior to his arrival. Aubrey’s faith was absolute regarding the celebration awaiting him. Cremation. Athletic director charged with manufacturing meth

Mitch Warmbrodt, 46, of Appleton City was arrested Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at the Butler High School and charged with purchasing an excessive amount of cold medication containing a controlled substance, pseudoephedrine. Warmbrodt is the athletic director at Butler R-V.

Chamber holds annual banquet

Adrian Chamber of Commerce held their seventh annual Spring Banquet at Frontier Village on Friday, March 7. Chamber board member Andy Enos welcomed everyone to the event, which was catered by the women of the WMAT&MA Auxiliary. Anna Lee James, was named Person of the Year. Andy Enos, Chamber member, presented James with the award. Debbie Powell and Chad Anderson presented a program on the Bates County Child Advocacy Center at the banquet.

City raises water rates; agrees to annex complex

The Adrian Board of Alderman held their regular meeting on March 10. The board voted to add a $7.97 per month user charge to water bills. This is the second rate hike since December and will bring the minimum monthly bill for City water customers to $27.98.

Student/Faculty basketball game

Adrian’s basketball senior night was originally scheduled for Friday, February 22. Due to bad weather the games were cancelled and unfortunately could not be rescheduled.

Last Friday night, March 7, a student/faculty basketball game and senior labor auction was planned so that the seniors could be recognized. Seniors being recognized were: Andy Underwood, Tyler Lincoln and Terri Jo Richmond.

50th Anniversary -- Arndt

Ed and Darlene Arndt celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 22, 2007. In honor of their special occasion, their children and grandchildren are hosting an open house on March 16 from 2 - 4 p.m. at the Frontier Village at Adrian. New Arrival -- Banks

Phoenix Banks is happy to announce the birth of his brother, Saben Hunter. Hunter was born Saturday, February 23, 2008 at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kansas. He weighed 4 lbs. and 10 ozs. and was 17 1/2 inches long.

The proud parents are Will and Molly (Stocklaufer) Banks. Maternal grandparents are Steve and Deborah Cooper and the late Lee Stocklaufer. Maternal great grandparents are Denver and Jean Stark.

Thomas and Kendra Holt of Urich, MO would like to announce the birth of a precious baby boy, Trystan Thomas, born on February 20, 2008 at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton, MO. Trystan was 7 lbs. 12 ozs. and 21 3/4 inches. To welcome home their baby brother was Krystal, Kody, Toalson, Jessica and Larissa.

Lucille M. Bitner, age 96 of Ellijay, Georgia, formerly of New Orleans, Louisiana died Monday, March 3, 2008 in Ellijay. Congrats Lady Blackhawks, Second in District

The Lady Blackhawks began District Tournament play in Osceola Tuesday night, taking on the Lady Bulldogs of Appleton City. Adrian started out at a strong scoring pace early in the game and continued through to halftime in the same manner, heading to the locker room with a 29-9 lead over Appleton City. It was more of the same thing the second half as the scoring continued and strong defense kept the Bulldogs down, causing turnovers and missed shots. The final score came out in favor of Adrian 55-16.
