Absentee voting

The Bates County Clerk’s office will be open on Saturday, February 2nd from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon for the purpose of absentee voting.

Arson possible cause in structure fire

The Adrian Police Department worked cases involving a suspicious fire, an animal control issue, an alleged assault and a disturbance, among other incidents and traffic stops this past week. Thursday, January 17, Officer Sellers responded to a suspicious structure fire in a small wooden building behind the Dollar General store. The building was used for storage. According to Officer Sellers’ report, the fire may possibly have been an arson fire and the investigation is continuing.

Candidate filing ends

The filing for candidates for city councils, school, hospital and water boards ended at 5 p.m. this past Tuesday, January 22, 2008. An official list will be available next week, but as of press time this week, the offices and candidates who have filed to date are as follows:
- Adrian School Board- Vanessa Tallman, Steve Lewis, Tom Underwood, and Tammy Fisher.
- Archie School Board - Andy Copeland, Shelia Thomas, Tim McGinnis, Ryan Grimes, Tim Shacker, April Wisker, Dennis Romi and Charlie Plattner.

Knights of Columbus free throw contest

All boys and girls, ages 10 to 14, are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2008 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held Sunday, January 27 at Adrian R-3 School (west gym). Registration is 1 - 1:30 p.m. with competition starting at 1:30 p.m.

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district and state competitions.

Lady Blackhawks win at home, lose on road

The Lady Blackhawks hosted the Lakeland Lady Vikings last Tuesday, January 15 and were victorious 60-30. To begin conference play, the Lady Blackhawks traveled to Osceola on Friday night where the Lady Blackhawks suffered their first conference loss, 54 to 70. The Lady Blackhawks will open the Archie Tournament on Monday night against the Heartland Lady Mustangs.

Blackhawks win two as conference play begins

The Adrian Blackhawks hosted the Lakeland Vikings on Tuesday, January 15. The Blackhawks jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter and never looked back. At the end of the first half, Adrian went to the locker room leading Lakeland 37-28. Coming out strong in the second half, changing the defensive scheme several times, the Blackhawks continued to shut down the Vikings with steady defense and patient, unselfish offense. In a game with 14 recorded team assists, Adrian also passed around the scoring opportunities, allowing 7 players to score 4 or more points.

Buddy Clarence Erickson 1961-2008

Buddy Clarence Erickson, age 46 of Amsterdam, Missouri died Wednesday, January 16, 2008 in Amsterdam. Funeral services were 2 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 2008 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler with Pastor Dave Rizer officiating. Burial in Scott Cemetery, Amsterdam, Missouri with military honors by the Missouri National Guard November Team. Contributions may be made to the family.

Gertrude Lanone Smith 1915-2008

Gertrude Lanone Smith, 92, Adrian, MO, died Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler, MO. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 19 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, officiated by Rev. Bob Maffitt, United Methodist Church, Adrian. Burial was in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian. Contributions may be made to the Adrian United Methodist Church Building Fund or to the Adrian Library.

Wiseman Woodrow “Woody” Spurlock 1915-2008

Wiseman Woodrow “Woody” Spurlock, age 92 of Butler, Missouri died Sunday, January 13, 2008 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. Funeral services were 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler with Dr. Terry Davis officiating. Contributions may be made to the Butler First Baptist Church or Bates County Memorial Hospital Foundation. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri.

Archie discusses water authority

The City of Archie held a public hearing on January 8, 2008 to discuss the possible cooperative venture between Archie and Public Water Supply District #5. Archie citizens received notice of the meeting in the form of a letter, which detailed the history of Archie’s water supply since 2002.

Council requests meeting with PWSD#5

The Adrian Board of Aldermen has taken the next step toward annexing the Adrian R-III property east of town. A public hearing was held before the regular council meeting on January 14, 2008 to allow for comments from local citizens. The city will accept written comments and questions on the matter until January 28. After an hour-long closed session, the board voted to schedule a meeting with Public Water Supply District #5 to discuss the terms of the annexation as well as water rates.

Candidate filing ends soon

The candidate filing for the April elections is ongoing, and a few more individuals have signed up this past week. As of Tuesday morning, January 15, those who have filed are:
Adrian School Board - Vanessa Tallman, Steve Lewis and Tom Underwood.
Archie School Board - Andy Copeland, Shelia Thomas, Tim McGinnis, Ryan Grimes, Tim Shacker and April Wisker.
Ballard School Board -Michael Kreitler, Tina Oerke, Dan Copleand and Robert Wayne Kagarice.

Wrestlers place second in tournament

The Adrian High School wrestling team placed second this past weekend at the Warsaw wrestling tournament. The team placed only three points behind the first place finisher. The Blackhawks had 9 wrestlers place at 4th or higher. Those pictured include: Back row - Coach Don Lile, Tom Gregg, Wyatt Jackson, Matthew Tallman, Jame Moran and Coty McDonald. Lady Blackhawks sail past Mustangs

The Adrian Lady Blackhawks traveled to Belton to play the Heartland Academy Lady Mustangs on Tuesday, January 8. It proved to be no match as Adrian pounded out a 75 to 15 victory with all team members seeing playing time.

Blackhawks defeat Heartland Academy

The Adrian Blackhawks traveled to Belton last Tuesday for a meeting with the Heartland Academy Mustangs. In the fourth quarter Heartland rallied to come within 4 points of the Blackhawks, mainly due to free throws. Adrian staged a rally of its own and pulled away in the final minutes to take home the first victory of 2008, winning 58-46 over the Heartland Academy Mustangs.

This week, games were here on Tuesday night against Lakeland and the Blackhawks will travel to Osceola on Friday night.

Engaged to Wed -- Draper-Lewis

Mr. and Mrs. Monte Draper of Osawatomie, KS announce the engagement of their daughter, Megan Jean, to Kyle Matthew Lewis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lewis of Amsterdam, MO.

Megan is a 2002 graduate of the former Faith Christian School, a 2005 graduate of JCCC, and a 2007 graduate of Kansas State University. She is employed by Able Hands Interpreting Services as a sign language interpreter. Her grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Gene Stewart of Osawatomie and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Draper of Lane, KS.

Engaged to Wed--Finkle-Fenwick

Mrs. Carol Borys, Lee’s Summit, announces the engagement of her daughter, Elizabeth Marie Finkle to Christopher Gavin Fenwick, Lee’s Summit. Elizabeth is also the daughter of the late Paul Finkle, formerly of Belton and Christopher is the son of Gavin and Sherri Fenwick, Clinton.

Elizabeth is a graduate of the University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg and is currently teaching kindergarten in the Oak Grove, Missouri School District.

Eunice Virginia Rumble 1917-2008

Eunice Virginia Rumble, 90, Harrisonville, MO, formerly of Adrian, MO, died Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at Golden Years Care Center, Harrisonville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, January 18 at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Van Wert, Ohio. (No visitation).

Elmer Ellsworth Sutton 1926-2008

Elmer Ellsworth Sutton, age 81 of Butler, Missouri died January 5, 2008 at his home in Butler. Funeral services were 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Irene McCoun officiating. Burial, Fairview Cemetery, Butler with military honors by Warrensburg National Guard. Contributions, American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association.

Lloyd Herbert Sage, 1930-2008

Lloyd Herbert Sage, 77, of Kansas City North died at home on Jan. 7, 2008. The Mass of Christian Burial was held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 10, 2008 at St. Raphael Catholic Church, with a visitation from 10:30 a.m.– 1:00 p.m. at the church; burial in Resurrection North Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Immacolata Manor, Liberty, MO or St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, Kansas City North.

Harold Lloyd Ackerley 1923-2008

Harold Lloyd Ackerley, 84, Adrian, MO, died Saturday, January 12, 2008 at Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler, MO. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, officiated by Rev. Paul Burhart, Adrian Christian Church. Music by Raelynn Kershner. Cremation. Inurnment will be held in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian. Contributions may be made to Crescent Hill Cemetery or to the Adrian Optimist Club.

Reading Across Missouri

Reading Across Missouri: Celebrate the 100th anniversary of Missouri’s 1st newspaper

Each new year, newspapers across the state publish a historical fiction serialized story for young readers to teach about Missouri history and encourage children to read inside their local newspaper. This year’s story, “Pressing West: A Page in History” will share with young readers the story of the Missouri Gazette, Missouri’s first newspaper, which began publishing July 12, 1808.

Chamber of Commerce elects officers

Officers elected for the 2008 Chamber of Commerce Board were: Front - Andy Enos, Linda Oldfield, Kip Yoss. Back - Curtis Reynolds, Alice Cumpton, Phil Oates, Elbert Scrogham.

BCI now accepting plastics

The Bates County Industries recently received two grants to purchase equipment to be used in their recycling services. The sheltered workshop received a grant from MFA to buy a floor scale and they received another grant from Quad Lakes Solid Waste Management to purchase a new baler to accommodate the recycling and baling of Number 1 and Number 2 type plastics.

BCI was already accepting newspapers, cardboard and other papers which the employees sort and bale. They also accept aluminum. And now, they can accept plastics as well.

Candidate filing open until Jan 22

Candidate filing for the April 8, 2008 election, which began December 18, is on-going and will continue through to Tuesday, January 22. The seats open are for city councils in Adrian, Archie and Drexel, as well as for the school boards in those cities and for Ballard, Miami and the Cass-Midway school districts. The Bates County Hospital Board also has one seat open for a five year term and there are two seats open for the Public Water Supply District #5.

Lady Blackhawks now 7-1

The Adrian Lady Blackhawks got back in to action last Friday night as they played host to the El Dorado Springs Lady Bulldogs.

Adrian came out scoring in the first quarter posting 14 points to El Dorado’s 7. The second quarter had the Lady Blackhawk’s lead dwindling as they were outscored, 15-22. The Lady Blackhawks went in to halftime tied at 29.

50th Anniversary -- Downey

A “50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration”, for Glennis & Opal Downey, will be held in the Adrian Optimist Building Sunday, January 20, 2008, between the hours of 2 pm - 5pm. Cards only please and a good ole’ time of refreshments and remembrances.

Yvonne Charlene Proell 1936-2007

Yvonne Charlene Proell, 71, of Independence, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2007 at the Rehabilitation Center of Independence. Burial was Monday, December 31 at the Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas.

Jean Ann Hayes 1951-2007

Jean Ann Hayes, age 56 of Harrisonville, Missouri died Sunday, December 30, 2007 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Larry Dee Dickens 1941-2007

Larry Lee Dickens, age 66, of Butler, Missouri died Monday, December 31, 2007 at his home. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2008 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler. No services. Cremation. Contributions, Butler Public Library.

Firefighters respond to 224 calls in 2007

The Adrian Volunteer Fire Department has responded to approximately 224 calls this past year, from January 1 to December 29, 2007. Of those calls, there were 70 medical calls, 52 mutual aide calls, 36 motor vehicle accidents and 66 calls of various nature, ranging from gas and electrical odors to possible fires. The total calls are for both the city and the rural departments.

Fire destroys Adrian home

The home of Ricky Lafollette was destroyed by fire on Wednesday, December 26. The structure was fully engulfed, with flames shooting through the roof when the fire department arrived on the scene.

The exact cause of the fire was undetermined. There were no injuries and no one was at home at the time. The house and contents were a total loss.

Thelma Elizabeth Christiansen 1911-2007

Thelma Elizabeth Christiansen, 96, Harrisonville, MO, formerly of Archie, MO, died Monday, December 31, 2007. Funeral services were held Thursday, January 3, 2008 at the Archie First Baptist Church. Burial was in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, MO. Contributions may be made to the church. Arrangements were under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home, Archie, MO.
