Big Top comes to Adrian
The Liebling Brother’s Circus was held in the Adrian City Park on Monday, September 24. Adrian’s Chamber of Commerce sponsored the event, which was well attended at both the 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. showings. Performers at the children’s circus were from Mexico, Florida, Texas, Chile and Argentina.

Amsterdam Jubilee
Amsterdam Jubilee was held Friday, September 21 and Saturday, September 22. Miss Tiny Tot was Teresa “Sissy” Dawn, 2 years old, daughter of Brett and Brittany Dawn of Adrian. Mr. Tiny Tot was Marshall Jackson, son of Richelle and Clint Jackson of Amsterdam. Queen was Ruby Birch, daughter of Clark and Tracy Birch. There were no princess candidates.
Lady Blackhawks head into conference play
The Adrian Lady Blackhawks had a long week last week as they ended it with a consolation finish in the Midway Tournament on Saturday.
Starting the week, the Lady Blackhawks traveled to Cass Midway to play the Lady Vikings in conference action. The Lady Blackhawks fell to Midway 23-25 and 22-25.
On Saturday the Lady Blackhawks participated in the Cass Midway tournament. They took on Lakeland and were able to pull out a win as they came out on top, 25-10 and 25-17.
Adrian finished out the tournament at Midway with a consolation finish.

Robert W. Ballantyne 1922-2007
Rev. Robert W. Ballantyne was born January 8, 1922 and went to be with the Lord on September 19, 2007. Services were held 10 a.m. Monday, September 24, 2007 at the Olathe Christian Church 200 E. Loula, Olathe, KS. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the church capitol fund.
City Wide Clean Up
City wide clean up for the South side will be Monday, October 1. Clean up on the North side will be Monday, October 8. Items should be placed at the curb the night before pickup.
Main Street Fair, October 13
The renovations in the two block business area on Adrian’s Main Street are nearing completion and plans are also nearly finished for a Street Fair to celebrate the re-opening of Main Street.
The Fair is to take place on Saturday, October 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will feature guest speakers, musical entertainment, book signings from local authors, an inflatable ride or two and many booths sponsored by businesses, school organizations, churches and civic groups. Contact the Adrian Chamber of Commerce at 297-0004 for more information in obtaining a booth.
Circus at Adrian City Park
Adrian City Park may look a little different on Monday, September 24, when a circus ‘big top’ tent occupies the grounds south of the arena. For each adult ticket purchased, two children’s tickets are free. Cost of the tickets at the gate will be $14. Advanced tickets, which can be purchased at the Chamber office, the Adrian Bank, the Citizens’ Bank or from any Chamber business, will be $10 each.
There will be two shows on September 24. The first is at 5 p.m and the second show will be at 7:30. For more information, contact the Adrian Chamber of Commerce at 816-297-0042.
Police vehicle determined to be totaled
The City’s insurance company has inspected the Adrian Police car which was damaged in an accident last week. The car received more damage than was initially thought. According to City Manager, Leonard Harrison, the insurance adjustor considers the car to be totaled and has issued a full-replacement claim.
Gun and Knife Show
Adrian Optimist Club members Jim LaRose and John Gray have announced the 1st Fundraiser Gun and Knife Show to be held in the sparkling new Optimist Community Center building located at Coop Road and 71 Hwy West Service Road. Jim reports dealer and attendance interest is overwhelming. At this writing there are 75 tables sold, with a possible 108 total available. The date will be October 5-6-7, 2007.
Lady Blackhawks improve record 14-5
The Adrian Lady Blackhawks had a split week last week as they defeated Sherwood last Monday night and fell to Butler on Tuesday.
Starting off the week against Sherwood, the Lady Blackhawks went two games for the victory, 25-14 and 25-8. Ashley Hontz recorded 13 points, 6 aces, and 1 block. Terri Jo Richmond matched Hontz’s points with 13 while recording 4 aces. Kendra Greer had 4 points, 2 aces, and 4 kills. Justine Enlow also recorded 4 points to help with the victory. Jessica Pemberton led in blocks with 2, and Lareesa Bagby led aside Greer with 4 kills.
Blackhawks fall to Tipton
Adrian had a tough time Friday, September 14 as they suffered their second loss of the season after falling to Tipton and moving their record to 1-2.
Engaged to Wed -- Newkirk - Stephens

Wilma Louise Silver, 90, Adrian, MO, died Saturday, September 15, 2007 at Vintage Park at Paola in Paola, KS. 2006-2007 Yearbooks are in. Graduates who ordered a yearbook may pick them up in the High School office. There are a few extras available for $40.
Adrian R-3 Blood Drive
Adrian R-3 Student Council and the Community Blood Center will hold a blood drive at Adrian High School on Thursday, September 20 from 2 - 6 p.m. in the Old Gym.
Police vehicle damaged in pursuit
An Adrian Police Officer who had responded on a medical call with the Adrian Fire Department was involved in a minor accident while leaving that scene to assist the Cass County Sheriff’s department in pursuit of a stolen vehicle.
Council approves demolition, renames street
At the regular meeting of the Adrian Board of Alderman on Monday, September 10, an agreement was signed with the owners of the Stevens Hardware building to provide a plan for its demolition, which should get underway in early October. The council also voted to rename West Lexington Avenue in honor of Max Stevens. The council approved the hiring of Tom Williams to operate the water plant as well as hearing regular monthly reports and dealing with some miscellaneous business.
Peculiar alderman receives assault charges at Archie
The Archie Truck and Tractor Pull held Saturday, September 8, ended in a near tragedy that did leave three people injured and landed a Peculiar city alderman in trouble.
Mt. Olivet celebrates 135 years
Mt. Olivet church, located southeast of Adrian, held a 135th Homecoming reunion on Sunday, September 9. Former pastors and members, friends and current members attended the reunion, which consisted of a church service, dinner and a program.
Lady Blackhawks take third in tournament
JV Blackhawks score big victory
The Adrian junior varsity Blackhawks opened their season Monday night, September 10 with a 58-0 victory over the visiting Appleton City Bulldogs. Erik White, Trevor Gregg and Issac Lowe each scored touchdowns for the Blackhawks.
Blackhawks falter at Orrick
The Adrian Blackhawks split their season record to 1-1 after falling to Orrick Friday night, 22-44.
Adrian played a close first quarter posting 6 points of their own and allowing Orrick just one touchdown and a successful two point conversion. The Blackhawks trailed in the second quarter as the defense was unable to stop the Orrick Bearcats. Adrian went in to the locker room trailing Orrick, 24-14.

Dedication at Athletic Complex
Before the opening game at the new Adrian Athletic Complex on Friday, August 31, the flag pole area was dedicated in memory of past Adrian R-III board members John Kershner and Bill Morrow. Both John and Bill were on the school board when the land the complex now sits on was purchased. They were both part of the original planning for future expansion of the Adrian R-III Schools.
Church celebrates 150 years
The Adrian First Baptist Church is celebrating a milestone this weekend. The church dates back a century and a half with 125 years of that, in Adrian. The community is invited to join in the four day celebration which begins Sunday, September 9 and runs through Wednesday, September 12.
Boot Block
The Adrian Fire Department’s annual Boot Block for Muscular Dystrophy far exceeded expectations. Last year, Adrian Fire Fighters raised about $3,400 for the cause. This year, as of Monday morning, September 3, the amount raised was $3,725.52.
9-11 Memorial Service in Adrian
The Adrian Volunteer Fire Department will hold its fifth annual 9-11 Memorial Observance on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 and it is hoped the community will take part in the service. All activities begin at 7 p.m. with a procession of emergency vehicles from many agencies in surrounding communities. A flyover by the Life Flight Air Ambulance helicopter is also scheduled during the procession time.
Lady Blackhawks open season with double dual victory
The Adrian Lady Blackhawks volleyball team opened their 2007 season with a double dual at home. Other teams participating were the Miami Lady Eagles and the Drexel Lady Bobcats. The Lady Blackhawks began play against the Lady Eagles. They took the match with scores of 25-10 and 25-18.
Blackhawks score 42-0 victory on new field
The Adrian Blackhawks opened the 2007 football season at the new Adrian Athletic Complex last Friday night with a 42-0 victory over the visiting Butler Bears. It was reported that a crowd of almost 2,000 was on hand to experience the beginning of a new Blackhawk tradition. Russell Hahs was the leading rusher with 169 yards on 14 carries. Josh Hubbard carried the ball 9 times for 92 yards and Tyler Lincoln recorded 47 yards on 8 carries. Adrian had 239 yards rushing on 39 carries and completed 4 of 5 passes for 54 yards. The Blackhawks held the Bears to 35 total yards.

Jessica is a 2004 graduate of Wayne High School and is currently a senior at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. Cole is a 2002 graduate of Adrian R-3 and a 2006 graduate of Northwest Missouri State. The couple is planning a January 5, 2008 wedding at the United Methodist Church in Adrian.
