Adrian Bank's 75th Anniversary

The Adrian Bank has grown from $30,479.05 in assets in November 1932 to $86,000,000 today. This coming October, the Bank will celebrate it’s 75th Anniversary with several activities. In upcoming weeks, the Adrian Journal will be bringing the bank’s history to the forefront, from the dust bowl days of the 1930s to the war years of the 1940s. From the Rock and Roll days of the 1950s, all the way into the 21st century.

Methamphetamine found in rural Adrian

On August 23, 2007, Bates County Sheriff’s Office Served a search warrant in rural Adrian. The search warrant was issued after Detectives from Cass and Bates County obtained information that there was stolen property stored at the residence.

Are you ready for some FOOTBALL!

The long awaited first game at the beautiful new Adrian Athletic Complex is almost here. This Friday night, August 31, the lights will be turned on, the popcorn and hotdogs will be ready and the stadium will be full. The voice of the Blackhawks will be heard loud and clear as game time is set for 7:00 p.m. with pregame festivities beginning around 6:30 p.m.

Football Jamboree

The Adrian Blackhawks played in a football jamboree held at Rich Hill last Friday evening. Other schools participating were Osceola and Appleton City. The Blackhawks begin the 2007 season this Friday night as they take on the Butler Bears. The game will be played at the new athletic complex.

Larry Gene Fields 1956-2007

Larry Gene Fields, 51, of Butler, MO, passed away Friday, August 24, 2007 at his home in Butler. Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at the Atkinson Chapel in Adrian, officiated by Reverend Steve Knoll.

Mildred Constance "Connie" Taylor 1925-2007

Mildred Constance “Connie” Taylor, age 81 of Butler, Missouri died Friday, August 17, 2007 in Garden City, Missouri. Graveside services were 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at the Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri with Jesse Schowengerdt officiating.

Velda Rose Rahn 1921-2007

Velda Rose Rahn, 86, Harrisonville, MO, died Wednesday, August 22, 2007 at Woodbine Nursing Home, Gladstone, MO. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 25, 2007, 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Harrisonville with Dr. David Noble officiating.

Lankfords celebrate anniversary

J.C. and Leeta Lankford of Norman, Oklahoma, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary August 28th. J.C. was from Adrian, Missouri and Leeta was from Farmersville, Illinois. They met in Adrian. He worked as a clerk in the local post office and was later promoted to Postmaster. He later was a Postal Inspector in Charge for 5 states, including Oklahoma. He retired in 1972. J.C. and Leeta have two children, Joe Lankford, an attorney in Norman, Oklahoma and Becky Lankford, who works at an assisted living center in south Oklahoma City.

The Adrian R-III School Board would like to invite ALL who helped in any way on the new Athletic Complex to be in attendance at the very first game of the season, Friday, August 31. We will be recognizing the community volunteers for the support and assistance on getting this project up and running. The game starts at 7:00 p.m. with our special recognition at 6:30.

Sports Complex almost complete

Volunteers at the Adrian Athletic Complex have been working at a frantic pace to have the field completed by August 31. On that date, the Adrian Blackhawks will host their first home football game of the season against the Butler Bears.

Jay Bagby, Adrian R-3 board member and coordinator of the Athletic Complex project, is extremely grateful for the volunteers who have helped at each step of the complex’s construction.

“We can’t stress our appreciation for volunteer help enough,” Bagby said. “It would be hard to name them all.”

Chamber business for August

Curtis Reynolds, owner of the American National Insurance Office on Main Street, accepts the Chamber mug from Patsy Lemon, Chamber President. Reynolds’ office also serves as the Adrian Chamber of Commerce headquarters.

Sports Complex work day

Saturday’s work day was the largest yet and very productive as well. At least 50 were on hand to help out in whatever capacity they could. Some of the work on Saturday included building fences, cleaning up brush and trash, building more concrete forms, setting the goalposts and clocks as well as continued work on the visitor bleachers. There seemed to be people everywhere, each doing what they could to help out. Yoss Thriftway was also on hand at noon to feed a very hungry crew!

Engaged to Wed -- Dollard - Marcusson

Teresa and Barry Adair of Adrian and Larry and Claudia Marcusson of Amoret would like to announce the upcoming wedding of our children, Ashley Dollard and Zach Marcusson, both of Butler. Ashley is a 2003 graduate of Lee’s Summit, MO. Zach is a 2001 graduate of Clay Center H.S., NE. The couple is planning a September 1, 2007 wedding in Harrisonville.

Mable Dora Roberts, age 89 of Butler, Missouri died Thursday, August 16, 2007 at her home in Butler. Funeral services were 2 p.m. Sunday, August 19, 2007 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler with Brother Bill Perkey officiating. Burial at 10 a.m. Monday, August 20 in Frazier Cemetery, Gower, Missouri.

Florence Rita Radford 1906-2007

Florence Rita Radford, age 100 of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at Medicalodge Nursing Center in Butler. Funeral services were 11 a.m. Saturday, August 18, 2007 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler with Rev. James Stanfield-Myers officiating. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Valerie June Durbin Northrup 1936-2007

Valerie June Durbin Northrup was born in rural Adrian, MO on July 16, 1936 to Leslie and Mattie Durbin and passed away on August 1, 2007 after a year and a half brave battle with cancer. Memorial services were held for June on August 11, 2007 at the Hill Top Presbyterian Church in Mendham.

All businesses on Main Street will remain open during regular business hours throughout the Vision 2007 Improvements. Enter through the buildings’ rear entrances, which are marked.

Community building almost complete, needs donations

The Adrian Optimist Club Community Building is in its last stages of construction. Interior work such as trim, floor coverings and light fixtures are all that remain before the building is completed, according to Kip Yoss, Optimist member.

The Community Building has been built primarily on donations; the Optimists have raised over $400,000 toward the project to date. Another $200,000 is needed to complete the project, and any donations will decrease the amount the Optimist Club must borrow.

Car, Truck and Bike Show a success

Last Saturday, August 11, Adrian’s City Park was host to the first annual Car, Truck and Bike Show. Matthew Tallman, a senior at Adrian High School, dreamed up the event after entering his car, a 1974 Nova, in several other shows. Tallman, a member of the South 71 Cruisers Car Club, contacted Chuck Hough, Adrian Park Board President, and the two planned the event.

Council discusses police protection outside city limits

Adrian’s City Council discussed demolition and asbestos removal of the Stevens Hardware building on Main Street, repair and closing of various railroad crossings in the city and the possibility of Adrian Police patrolling property outside the city limits at their meeting on Monday, August 13.

Beverly S. Muiller 1935-2007

Beverly S. Muiller, 72, of Adrian, MO (formerly of Aurora and West Plains, MO) died Friday, August 10, 2007 surrounded by her family at home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 14, 2007, 10:30 a.m. at the Adrian United Methodist Church. Rev. Bob Maffitt officiated. Burial was in the Crescent Hill Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Adrian United Methodist Church Building Fund or Grace Hospice in her memory.

Cleda Irene Ward, age 94 of Amsterdam, Missouri died Monday, August 6, 2007 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 10, 2007 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler with Pastor Nelson Caswell officiating. Burial in Scott Cemetery, Amsterdam. Contributions to Heartland Hospice.

"Mo" Barbara Joan Hill 1933-2007

“Mo” Barbara Joan Hill, age “39” of Adrian, Missouri passed away Friday, August 10, 2007 at St. Joseph Health Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at the Victory Assembly of God Church in Adrian, Missouri with Pastor Lance Loughridge officiating. Burial in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, Missouri. Contributions may be maade to the Barbara Hill Children Ministry Fund. Arrangements were under the direction of the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel Butler, Missouri.

The next Chamber of Commerce BAT meeting will be held on August 17 at 7:30 a.m. at Del's Appliance. Breakfast will be served.

Main Street gets leveled

Last Friday, August 3, road crews used a cold milling machine to “chew” through the layers of asphalt on Main Street. Beginning with a flat surface will ensure that the new surface will not crown. The Vision 2007 improvements continued Monday and Tuesday, August 6 and 7 with concrete curb pouring and gutter work. After conduit and lighting is installed, sidewalk construction will begin.

PWSD #5 considers contract, authority

Approximately thirty PWSD #5 members and visitors met at Griffith’s Bookkeeping on Main Street for the water district’s monthly meeting. The group discussed a proposed contract between the City of Adrian and the district.

The Bates County Public Water Supply District #5 discussed options for water sources in their regular meeting on August 6. The City of Adrian offered a modified version of a contract that District 5 turned down earlier this year. The District also discussed the possibility of forming a water authority with the City of Archie.

69th Annual Osage Valley Meeting

The 69th Annual Meeting of the members of the Osage Valley Electric Cooperative Association will be held at the Osage Valley Headquarters Site in Butler, Missouri on Thursday, August 16, 2007.

At the annual meeting, members exercise their rights as member/owners of their electric cooperative. The members learn how their cooperative is doing financially, elect three board of directors to serve a three-year term, and have a fun filled evening.

Car, Truck and Bike Show in Adrian

This Saturday, August 11, Adrian’s City Park will be the site of a Car, Truck and Bike Show.

Sponsored by the City Park, the show will begin at 5 p.m. and will end at 9 p.m.

Antique, classic, custom, stock car, Corvette, street rods, jeeps, trucks and motorcycle entries will be accepted. Registration for entries begins at 2 p.m. and will continue until 5. Entry fee is $15. First place awards will be given at 9 p.m.

Concessions will be available at the show. Proceeds for food sales will go to the Adrian R-3 Senior Class.

Powderpuff football game benefits Children's Mercy

A Powder Puff football game was played Saturday night at the Deaton Thomas Field in Butler. The Adrian Lady Blackhawks volleyball players took on the Butler Lady Bears volleyball players to benefit the Children’s Mercy Oncology Parent Room. The benefit game raised $1,333.00.

Alma Lavon MacDowell 1912-2007

Alma Lavon MacDowell, 95, Olathe, Kansas, died Saturday, August 4, 2007 at the Good Samaritan Center in Olathe. L. Lavaun Gunnels 1916-2007

Lillie Lavaun Gunnels, 90, of Drexel, Mo. passed away July 31, 2007. Services will be held at Wilson & Son Funeral Home in Drexel, Mo. Saturday with the visitation from 10-11 AM followed by the service at 11 AM. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Julia Pearl Pohle 1918-2007

Julia Pearl Pohle, 89 of Fayetteville, Arkansas, died Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at Northwest Medical Center, Springdale, Arkansas. Funeral services were held July 21st, 2:00 p.m. at the Moore’s Chapel in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Rev. Jerry Jenkins and the Rev. Paul Dennis officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens, Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Main Street closed; three fuel tanks unearthed

Pictured, clockwise from top: A road closed sign was placed at the intersection of Main and Kentucky on Monday morning, July 30. The section of Main Street from Kentucky to Lexington will be closed to traffic until the completion of Vision 2007 improvements. Three tanks were unearthed in front of Adrian Lanes on Tuesday, July 31. The tanks, relics from a Ford Garage, were drained of fluid on Monday.

Kindermusik classes offered in Adrian

Beginning September 4, a new opportunity for children ages 0 - 5 will be available in Adrian. Kindermusik classes, an early childhood music and movement program, will be taught by Allison Oates on Tuesday evenings. Classes for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers will be held at the Adrian Masonic Lodge, located on Third Street between Lexington and Virginia. Short-Underwood united in marriage

Audrey Short, daughter of Lane and Debbie Short of Nevada, Missouri and Mitchell Underwood, son of Mike and Jacque Underwood of Adrian, Missouri were united in marriage on June 2, 2007 in a beautiful ceremony at the Northwoods Wedding Chapel in Nevada, Missouri. A gorgeous setting in the woods, accompanied by beautiful weather, made this ceremony very special. A dinner and dance was held at the Nevada Elks Lodge immediately after the ceremony. Following a honeymoon in Cancun, the newlyweds are residing east of Adrian.

New Arrival -- Woerner

The long awaited arrival is finally here. Kaden Wesley Woerner was born June 22, 2007 at 6:58 p.m. at St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City, MO. He weighed 8 lbs. 1 oz. and is 20 inches long. The proud parents are John and Valerie Woerner, Harrisonville, MO.

Maternal grandparents are Wesley and Jamie Rabourn, Adrian. Paternal grandparents are Wes and Tammy Woerner, Harrisonville.

New Arrival-- Millard

Patrick and Natasha Millard are proud to announce the birth of their second child, Everett Russell Millard. Everett was born on Sunday, July 15 at 3:42 p.m. at the Nevada Regional Medical Center. He weighed 6 pounds, 5 ounces and was 20 inches long. Everett is the baby brother of Ira Millard. His grandparents are Franz and Cecelia Schilling of Clinton, Missouri and Joseph and Terry Brandyl of Pleasanton, Kansas.

New Arrival -- Pasteur

Kevin Pasteur and Tomi Sieleman are proud to announce the new arrival of their daughter Emily Grace Pasteur. She was born July 18, 2007, 2:37 p.m. at Menorah Hospital in Overland Park, KS. She weighed 7 lbs. and was 19 3/4 inches long.

Donald Joe Catron 1928-2007

Donald Joe Catron, 78, Adrian, MO, died Saturday, July 28, 2007 at his home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, officiated by Rev. Paul Burhart, Adrian Christian Church. Honorary casket bearers were Richard Frazier, Harry Joe Frazier, Herbie Frazier, Allan Catron, Larry Catron and Kelli Catron. Casketbearers were Jerry Clark, Clarence Muiller, Earl Muiller, Harold Corum, Melvin Smith and Jerry “Yogi” Clark. Burial was in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian. Military honors were under the auspices of the Harrisonville Honor Guard.

Margaret Willa Linn 1914-2007

Margaret Willa Linn, 93, Harrisonville, MO, died Thursday, July 26, 2007 at Crown Care Center, Harrisonville. Graveside services were held Saturday, July 28, 2007 at the Hume Cemetery, Hume, MO, officiated by Rev. Jay Borders, Nevada, MO. Casket bearers were Jon Linn, Josh Linn, Tom Livengood, Bob Livengood, Brent Kincheloe, Jim Gaughan and David Graham. Contributions may be made to Hume Cemetery Association. Eastern Star services were under the auspices of the Adrian Crescent Hill Eastern Star.
