WMAT&MA Show a success
The Western Missouri Antique Tractor and Machinery Association’s 29th annual Steam and Gas Engine Show has now become part of the history it recreates each year. This past weekend, hundreds of people trekked the Frontier Village grounds to see and participate in scores of activities and demonstrations of living history. The warm temperature and light breezes created beautiful days that added to the show’s attraction.
Film crew visits Adrian to document Nurse Laura
Last week, Kent Faddis and his crew from TV News Production, Co-op Video Group, out of Columbia, Missouri, was in Adrian for several hours filming a news segment. The topic was rural health care and nurse practitioners, more specifically, on opening and owning a clinic. Even more specifically, they were following up on a presentation earlier this month on “How to Open a Clinic in Ten Days”. The presenter of that subject was Adrian’s own Nurse Laura Thiem.

July’s Story Hour at the Adrian Community Library will be held Wedesday, July 11 at 10 a.m. It is open to ages 3 - 5. (A parent or guardian must be present.)

4th of July Celebration slated for this Saturday
The annual Independence Day celebration, sponsored by the Adrian Optimist Club, is this Saturday, June 30 and the day promises to be filled with plenty of red, white and blue activities for everyone.
Fireworks not allowed in city limits before July 4
“With the Independence Day celebration coming up, I remind citizens that there are to be no fireworks inside the city limits until July 4,” said Adrian Police Chief Charles Chapman. “This includes everything, including no aerials. Period.”

Bessie Irene Kendrick of Adrian passed away Friday, June 22, in the loving care of her niece, Thelma Silver and husband, Kenny, while they were attending to Bessie’s every care and need in their home in Nevada, Missouri.
Services were held Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian, Missouri.

Adrian officers assist in raid to apprehend felons
Tuesday, June 12, Chief Charles Chapman, Officers Pope and Wright and Bates County Sheriff’s Deputy Vic Selle were in the process of planning a raid at the Parkwood Apartments regarding two wanted felons. A call came in for an emergency response for a disturbance in progress that involved a pregnant female and one of the felons. All officers responded immediately to the scene. Bradley Beech of Holden, Missouri was arrested at the scene. The second wanted felon was Jerry Pickering of Harrisonville, who was later located by Chief Chapman in Archie. Pickering was arrested at that time.
Chamber BAT hears from Vision 2007
The Chamber of Commerce Business About Town (BAT) meeting was held on Friday, June 15 at Wimfield’s on Main. Local business owners heard from Mark Lovelace, Vision 2007.
Lovelace opened the meeting by explaining how the Vision 2007 project began. He said that Adrian was one of eight towns initially selected to receive grant money to make improvements. Out of the eight towns, Adrian is the only one still working on their improvement project.
“We’re really serious about keeping Adrian businesses alive,” Lovelace said.
70th Wedding Anniversary
The children of Clifford and Thelma Leister are pleased to annouce the 70th wedding anniversary of their parents. Ballard 4-H Achievement Day
The Ballard 4-H are sponsoring a local Achievement Day on Sunday, June 24 at 4 p.m. at Bob and Charmie Kagarice’s home, located on East Highway 18 to T Blacktop and follow signs. Ballard 4-h students’ projects will be displayed and judged. Everyone is welcome. Free ice cream and dessert will be served. Bring a lawn chair.

City of Adrian hires new full time police officer
The City of Adrian and the Adrian Police Department welcome their newest full-time police officer, Leslie Pope. The Board of Aldermen voted to hire Pope at their regular meeting on June 11, 2007 and she reported for duty on June 12. The Board also heard from the Missouri Department of Transportation, which was seeking input on their plan to close the Route 71 access that connects to COOP Road.

Independence Day Celebration
The annual Independence Day celebration sponsored by the Adrian Optimist Club will take place this year on Saturday, June 30 and as always, promises to be a day filled with fun activities for everyone.
To kick off the day’s events, the parade will begin at 10:30 a.m.. The Grand Marshal has yet to be announced. All local civic organizations, groups, antique car owners, kids’ clubs and businesses are invited to be part of the parade. For more information, contact Bryan Reynolds at 816-738-1844.

Michelle and Tom are both recent graduates of Truman State University. Michelle received a degree in Health Sciences/Pre Med-Biology. She works currently as a paramedic with the Adair County Ambulance Service and plans to continue graduate work in the science and health field in Fall 2007.

Elvin Eugene Nieder, age 71 of Amsterdam, Missouri died Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at St. Joseph Health Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2007 at the Amsterdam United Methodist Church in Amsterdam, Missouri with Linda Case officiating. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri. Contributions to the Amsterdam United Methodist Church or the Western Missouri Antique Tractor and Machinery Association. Services were under the direction of the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri.
Carole Sue Atkinson 1938-2007
Carole Sue Atkinson, 69, Archie, MO, died Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at her home after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Funeral services were held Friday, May 25 at the First Baptist Church in Archie, officiated by Dr. Jeff Paul.
Goods donated to fire department
“They were there when I needed them,” said Anna Brown. “I thought I could say thank you and help them in this way.”
The ‘they’ who helped the Brown family is the Adrian Volunteer Fire Department. They quickly responded to the Brown property, west of Passaic, when a pasture caught fire. The fire was extinguished just before it would have reached a large propane tank and possibly buildings on the property.
Pre-construction Vision 2007 meeting
A pre-construction meeting for Adrian’s Vision 2007 Project was held on Wednesday, May 30 at 10 a.m. Representatives from MoDOT, Hilty Quarries, Olsson Associates, James Drew Corporation, Missouri and Northern Arkansas Railroad, Kaysinger Basin RPC, Vision 2007 and the Adrian City Council were present. Cindy Kendrick, Adrian’s Mayor, and Leonard Harrison, City Administrator, were also present.
Summer Reading Program
Super sleuths and daring detectives are invited to join “Get a Clue @ Your Library” at the Adrian Community Library. The 2007 Summer Reading Program is open to young people, preschool through those entering sixth grade, with programs, prize drawings, story hours and more.
The library is currently accepting registrations for families to receive a calendar of events. Registration is free.
The library encourages adults and teens to help in any way possible.

WMAT&MA Steam and Gas Engine Show coming soon
In just three short weeks, the streets of Adrian's Frontier Village will be filled with throngs of people. The chug-chugging of vintage tractors and steam engines and the scent of spicy cooking and kettle corn will fill the air.The 29th Annual Western Missouri Antique Tractor and Machinery Association's Steam and Gas Engine Show will be held Friday through Saturday, June 22, 23, and 24, at Frontier Village, located near the intersection of U.S. 71 and Missouri Highway 18.
Memorial Day Service held at Crescent Hill
Memorial Day Services were held at Crescent Hill Cemetery on Saturday, May 26 at 10 a.m. Representatives from VFW Post 1935 and others were present for the service, which honored fallen U.S. veterans. The service was opened in prayer by Pastor Paul Burhart of Adrian Christian Church. Don Arndt, VFW Service Officer, welcomed the group and invited all the veterans to lay wreaths on the war memorial monument.

The Adrian High School held their annual spring sports athletic reception last Tuesday evening. High School Principal Chris Shanks gave the usual welcome and congratulated the coaches, athletes and parents for successful seasons.
