Community library to hold reading program

The Adrian Community Library 2007 Summer Reading Program will be held from June 11 to July 27, 2007. Registration forms will be available beginning May 28 at the Library. The program will include students going into kindergarten through sixth. There will also be a Tiny Tots reading program for ages 2-5.For information, call Melinda Elmer at 297-2022.Look in the Journal for library hours and phone numbers.

City Council approves purchases for Adrian Manor improvements

A special meeting of the Board of Aldermen was held Monday, May 21, 2007 in the City Hall of Adrian, Missouri. Mayor Kendrick presided and called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Aldermen Bruce Scarborough, Mike Lemon, Hank Stark, Steve Lovelace were present. Also present were Max Gordon, City Counselor, Melisa Newkirk, City Clerk and Leonard Harrison, City Administrator. Donita Ruch was a visitor.

Adrian R-3 School Board accepts bids for Athletic Complex

The Adrian R-3 Board of Education met in regular session Thursday, May 17, 2007. The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m., by President Jacque Underwood, in the Conference Room. Other board members present were Jay Bagby, Jim Ferguson, Steve Lewis, Vanessa Tallman, Jim Tenholder and Gary Tolle. The High School building and the Athletic Complex project were discussed. There were three bids to build a new press box. One bid was from a group out of Iowa for $3000 plus. Another bid was from a group out of Windsor to build the box there and haul it to the site.

Engaged to Wed--Turner-Bailey

Mr. and Mrs. William Turner, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Culver and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bailey would like to announce the engagement of their children Carrie Michelle Turner and Todd Benton Bailey. Todd works at Regency Place of Greenwood as an Activity Director/Recreation Therapist in Indianapolis, Indiana and Carrie works at Brooksource as an IT Recruiter in Indianapolis, Indiana. Todd and Carrie are both Indiana University graduates and are going to be married at the Indiana University Auditorium in Bloomington, Indiana on June 16, 2007.

Josephine "Jo" Pauline Yarnell, age 84 of Springdale, Arkansas, formerly of Ballard, Missouri died Monday, May 21, 2007 in the Maples at Her-Ber Meadows Nursing Home in Springdale. Funeral services were 11 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2007 at the Temple Baptist Church in Erie, Kansas with Rev. Bill Bingham officiating. Burial in the East Hill Cemetery, Erie, Kansas. Contributions to the Temple Baptist Church. Services were under the direction of the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri.

Kevin James Hall 1986 - 2007

Kevin James Hall, age 21 of Joplin, passed away at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, May 20, 2007 in Los Osos, CA. Service arrangements are pending at Parker Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri.

Justin Allen Moore 1983 - 2007

Justin Allen Moore, age 24 of Butler, Missouri died Monday, May 7, 2007 at his home as the result of a fire. His son, Ethan Carson Moore died Friday, May 11, 2007 at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri from complications of smoke inhalation. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2007 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Dr. Terry Davis Officiating. Burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri. Jesse Anderson "Bud" Cooper 1916 - 2007

Jesse Anderson "Bud" Cooper, age 90 of Butler, Missouri died Thursday, May 17, 2007 at Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg, Missouri. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2007 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri with Dr. Terry Davis officiating and Masonic Rites by Art Zellmer. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler with military honors by the Clinton VFW. Contributions to the Butler First Baptist Church.

Cora Estella Hand 1915 - 2007

Cora Estella Hand, 91, Adrian, MO, died Saturday, May 19, 2007 at Willow Lane Nursing Center, Butler, MO. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, MO, officiated by Rev. Paul Burhart, Adrian Christian Church. Burial was in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian.

Rose "Yvonne" (Gunn) Bryant

Rose "Yvonne" (Gunn) Bryant, 69, Olathe, KS passed away May 18, 2007 from ALS/ Lou Gherigs Disease. Memorial services were Thursday, May 24th at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Olathe, KS. The family requests memorial contributions may be made to ALSA or Kansas City Hospice.

Co-Valedictorians

Cody Knuth and Josh Huenefeld have been named as Co-Valedictorians of the 2007 graduating class at Adrian R-III. Cody is the son of David and Sharon Knuth and Josh is the son of Randy and Kathy Huenefeld. Both Cody and Josh plan on attending Kansas State University in the fall. Commencement excercises will be held Sunday afternoon, May 20 at 2:30 p.m. at the Adrian R-III Gymnasium.

Fredrickson hired as Manor Administrator

The Adrian City Council voted unanimously to hire interim administrator Doug Fredrickson as the Adrian Manor Administrator. The Aldermen also voted to hire a third full time police officer and to train all officers on animal control procedures. Police Chief Charles Chapman is currently under investigation for an animal control incident and the Council heard from citizens involved with that incident.

Dog shooting under investigation

Last week, Chief Charles Chapman shot a dog that had reportedly chased pedestrians. The case is still under investigation by the Bates County Prosecutor. Chapman said that because a full report is pending, he can't comment on the case until all facts have been examined.

Hahs to represent Adrian at State

Senior Russell Hahs will be Adrian's representative at the state track meet this weekend in Jefferson City. Hahs will compete in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles. Hahs finished third in the 110 meter hurdles and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles at Sectionals on May 12 at Cass-Midway.

Blackhawks close 2007 baseball season

The Blackhawks closed their 2007 baseball season this weekend after losing their first round in the Class 2 District competition at Adrian. Before competing in districts, Adrian finished out their regular season games on Tuesday, May 8, as they traveled to Butler. The Blackhawks fell behind early as they found themselves trailing by four in the second quarter. Adrian struggled on both defense and offense as they fell to the Butler Bears, 2-9.

Lady Blackhawks end their season with a 8-7 record

The Lady Blackhawks softball team rounded out their season last Tuesday, May 8, as they traveled to Butler to take on the Lady Bears. Adrian fell behind by one in the first inning but was able to tie Butler in the fourth inning, 1-1. The Lady Blackhawks took the lead in the top of the fifth by two, but couldn't hold Butler off as they found themselves tied, 3-3, going into the seventh inning. Adrian played tough defense in the seventh and headed in to extra innings with the Lady Bears.

New Arrival--MaKayla Marie Anderson

Marissa Ann would like to announce the birth of her sister MaKayla Marie Anderson, daughter of Josh and Melissa Anderson of Adrian. MaKayla was born Thursday, May 10, 1:56 a.m. at St. Lukes Plaza Hospital weighing 1 lb. 6 ozs. and 12 1/2 inches long. MaKayla is doing well but has a long road ahead of her in the NICU. An account has been set up at the Adrian Bank to help Josh and Melissa with the expense of traveling and caring for their precious little MaKayla.

Engaged to Wed--Franklin-Ogle

Ralph and Jimmie Franklin, Hume, announce the engagement of their daughter, Tiffany Franklin, to Clayton Ogle, Son of Clell and Christy Ogle, Archie, MO. The Bride is a 2003 graduate of Hume High School and 2006 graduate of Fort Scott Community College. The Groom is a 2001 graduate of Archie High School and 2006 graduate of Kansas State University. A June 23 wedding is planned at the Hume Christian Church in Hume, Missouri. The couple will reside in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Town Under Water

Water, water everywhere. The rain began on Sunday morning, May 6, and didn't let up all day. Some reported four to five inches fell, according to their rain gauges. And it didn't stop there. Over 360 Adrian Aquila customers were without power for a period of three hours on Sunday. According to an Aquila representative, lightning struck and locked out a protective device on a utility pole, leaving many without power and causing businesses to close and churches to conduct service in the dark.

Eight Blackhawk thinclads advance to Class 2 Sectionals

The Adrian track teams had a successful week last week after competing in the WEMO Conference track meet at Archie and then traveling to Midway on Saturday for the Class 2 District meet.

Engaged to Wed--Burhart-Roth

Maria Burhart, daughter of Paul and Dawn Burhart of Adrian, will be wed to Joseph Roth, son of Doyle and Jean Roth of St. Peters, MO, on June 1st, 2007. Joseph graduated in 2006 from Ozark Christian College with a Bachelors degree in Biblical Literature, and Maria graduates from OCC this May with her Bachelors in Biblical Literature. Joseph and Maria will live in Beloit, Wisconsin where they will serve at Central Christian Church in the area of children's ministry.

April Chamber Highlight is MoJo Carwash

The Adrian Chamber of Commerce featured business for April is the MoJo Car Wash owned by Matt and Johanna Kendrick. The business is located on First Street, near the intersection of Old 71 Highway and Missouri Highway 18, next to the commuter parking lot.

Police investigate thefts, find drug paraphernalia

Adrian Police Chief Charles Chapman warns of a home repair solicitation scam that occurred this past week. Also, officers have investigated a couple of thefts as well as recovered some drug-related items.
