Sports complex in progress
Volunteers continued work at the new Adrian R-3 Sports Complex on Saturday, April 21. Thirteen loads of concrete were brought in for the locker room and concession stand footings. Many companies and individuals donated labor and supplies to the project, including Ambassador Steel, which provided all the steel for the footings and Rebar, which provided laborers. Shaun Bruto, Steve Lewis, Jim Tenholder, Phil Hughes, Henry Keating, Chopper Bagby and Jay Bagby pour the footings for the locker rooms at the complex.
Steve Oldfield update
Many of you have inquired about Steve Oldfield's condition. I am floored by the amount of support this community has given to Steve and his family, and to the Journal. Blackhawk track team has strong showing
The Adrian Blackhawks had a long week last week as they traveled to Archie last Tuesday, Sherwood on Wednesday, Barstow on Friday, and started this week at Midway. The Blackhawks participated in the Archie Invitational last Tuesday as they ended with a fifth place team finish. The boys were able to finish with 12 top place finishes and the girls were able to capture 7 of their own.
Blackhawks baseball has successful week
The Adrian Blackhawks baseball team was in action last week as they hosted Montrose on Thursday and traveled to Jawyhawk-Linn on Friday for a double header. In the second game against the Jayhawks, Adrian fell behind in the second inning as they found themselves trailing 6-3. The Blackhawks turned the game around in the fifth inning as they were able to catch the lead and pick up their defense. Adrian captured the win, 20-9 after a slow start.

Geneva F. Bruto, 84, of Butler, MO passed away on Sunday, April 22, 2007 at the Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler, MO. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 26, 2007 at the Underwood-Brandtonies Funeral Home of Butler. Visitation was held Wednesday, April 25, 2007 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Underwood-Brandtonies Funeral Home. Burial will follow the service in Oak Hill Cemetery. Leslie C. Dunnington 1901-2207
"Les" Dunnington, 105 years of age and a lifelong resident of the Drexel, Missouri community, passed away in his home on April 19, 2007. Visitation was held on April 25, 2007, at the Wilson & Son Funeral Home in Drexel at 1:00 p.m. followed by the memorial service and burial in Sharon Cemetery.

Courthouse tax to take effect in October
Marlene Wainscott, Bates County Clerk, announces that the 1/2 cent sales tax to finish the courthouse clock tower will take effect on October 1, 2007. The commission met with Sisk Construction and Roofing and Paul Oliver from Advanced Fiberglass Products, LLC. on Wednesday, April 11, to finalize the contracts for future tower restoration projects.

A stroke Sunday night left him unable to return to his normal post on Monday morning. Currently, Steve's family is waiting by his side twenty-four-seven, trying to make sense of what has happened in such a short period of time.

Map Testing
Map testing for grades 7, 8, 10 and 11 will be held Tuesday, April 17, Wednesday, April 18 and Thursday, April 19. All students need to get a good night's sleep and eat a good breakfast.
Fire Department responds to accident on Hwy 18
A one vehicle accident occurred on April 6 on 18 Highway east of Adrian near the KK intersection. The Adrian Fire Department responded to assist. Gina L. Dobbins, 51, of Adrian, received minor injuries, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol report by Trooper K.A. Schmutzler. Dobbins was traveling eastbound in a 1996 Jeep when the accident occurred.
Railroad crossings to be closed
Changes in streets and railroad crossings are coming to Adrian. Representatives from Missouri Northern Arkansas Railroad, MoDOT and the City Council met last week and discussed, by phone, the plans to close three railroad crossings at Third, Sixth and Seventh Streets. Crossing arms, lights and pedestrian crossings will be placed for the streets that remain open. They are First, Main, Fifth and Eighth Streets.
Settlement reached with Greenwood
The regular meeting of the Board of Aldermen was held Monday, April 9, 2007 in the City Hall of Adrian, Missouri. Mayor Cindy Kendrick presided and called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Aldermen Bill Greenwood, Hank Stark and Mark Lovelace were present. Absent: Floyd Clark. Also present was Max Gordon, City Counselor, Melisa Newkirk, City Clerk and Leonard Harrison, City Administrator.Melisa Newkirk, City Clerk then gave the oath office to the new aldermen. Mike Lemon is the new Aldermen for the North Ward and Bruce Scarborough is the new Aldermen for the South Ward.

Blackhawks fall to Archie; Win over Northeast Vernon
The Adrian Blackhawks traveled to Archie last Tuesday to take on the Whirlwinds in the second game of their 2007 baseball season. The Blackhawks battled through and with the tieing run on second in the top of the seventh, Adrian fell short to the Whirlwinds by one, ending the game 3-4. Adrian moves their record to 0-2 for the season. The Blackhawks continued their season Monday night as they hosted Northeast Vernon County.
New Arrivals--Presleigh and Noah Saathoff
Kris and Dara Saathoff are pleased to announce the birth of their twins, Presleigh Lenae and Noah Ryle. Presleigh was born April 2 at 1:25 a.m., weighing 1 lb 6.5 ounces and measuring 11.5 inches long . . . 4 days 23 hours and 12 minutes later, Noah made his appearance on April 6 at 11:37 p.m. He weighed 1 lb 10 oz and measured 12 inches long. Brother and sister are doing well. Maternal grandparents are Drenda Enos of Adrian; and Tim and Debby Enos of Butler. Paternal grandparent is Kendal Saathoff of Adrian.

Election: April 2007 (Unofficial Results)
The final tally (unofficial) is complete and the 2007 April election is over. Bates Countians stepped out and made their marks. They exercised their right. For the fourth time, a tax to finish the Courthouse tower renovation was approved. The 1/2 cent tax, for only one year, should bring in enough cash to complete the job.In Adrian, the race for north ward alderman was won by Mike Lemon, 135, defeating Joyce Talley, 77, and Candace Corley, 14. On the south side, challenger Bruce Scarborough, 89, defeated incumbent Bill Greenwood, 56.
Adrian graduate publishes history of border war

Fundraising Scams
It has come to the attention of the Adrian School District that a business by the name "PRIMETIME" has been contacting local merchants in order to raise money to support the Adrian High School Marching Band. DO NOT participate in this program. "This has not been approved by the Adrian R-3 School District," said Chris Shanks, principal. "If this business has contacted you, please contact the school and report it to the High School office as we are trying to resolve this matter."
Blackhawks kick off track season at Archie
The Adrian Blackhawk track teams kicked off their season Monday night as they traveled to Archie to compete in the Archie Invitational Track Meet. The boys finished tenth in the meet with 23 team points. The Lady Blackhawks took an eleventh place team finish with 14 points. The Blackhawks will hit the road again on April 10 when they travel to Jayhawk Linn. Field events are set to start at 3:00 p.m.
