Courtwarming this Friday
The Adrian Blackhawks and Lady Blackhawks will be hosting Appleton City this Friday night and will be holding Courtwarming festivities. The crowning of the queen will be held during halftime of the varsity boys game. Queen candidates and escorts are: Front row - Senior Sam Cleland, daughter of Cindy Cleland; Junior Heather Williams, daughter of Steve and Terry Williams; Sophomore Ariel Fredrickson, daughter of Doug and Dena Fredrickson; Freshman Olivia Case, daughter of Mike and Kelli Case.
Commissioners set 2007 budget; sales tax on April ballot
"Things look good as we start a new year," said Bates County Presiding Commissioner Donna Gregory. "We had to do some cutting of requests for expected expenditures, but it all looks good."

Lady Blackhawks bring home second place trophy

Weekend Round Two
For the second weekend in a row the clouds placed a blanket of snow around the area, causing travel problems for everyone. An estimate of four to six inches of the wet stuff was reported and temperatures dipped into single digits. Now that winter has arrived, it not only becomes difficult for humans - it also causes wildlife and livestock to change their livelihood.
Police Chief warns citizens of mail scams
Chief Chapman was contacted in regard to yet another mail scam. This latest one involves a 'secret shopper' company. The company sends a check for thousands of dollars. The victim is to deposit the check in his or her own bank account, then, to send a money order through Western Union, MoneyGram, etc. to the company. The victim is supposedly 'rewarded' with a percentage of the money to keep. Chief Chapman said if anyone is contacted about such offers or employment to contact him at 297-2106.
R-3 Board votes to purchase lot near school; hires new teacher
The Adrian R-3 Board of Education met Thursday January 18, 2007, at 9 a.m., for a tour of the building before the regular monthly meeting. After the tour, the meeting for January was called to order at 10:35 a.m., in the Conference Room, by President Jacque Underwood. Discussion was held on the purchase of a lot across the street, south of the school. A motion was made by Bagby and seconded by Lewis to purchase the house and lot across from the school for $9000. The motion was approved with a roll call vote, 7-0.
Blackhawk squads post first round tournament wins
Both the Adrian Lady Blackhawks and Blackhawks traveled to Archie Monday night to take on the Midway Lady Vikings and Vikings in their first round games of the 77th Annual Archie Tournament. The Lady Blackhawks started the game running and was able to jump ahead of the Lady Vikings early.The fourth quarter proved to be the highlight of the night as both teams battled hard until the end. Adrian kept up their scoring and defense to walk away with a 57-41 victory over Midway.
Adrian varsity squads fall to state ranked Osceola Indians
Despite not having classes on Friday, the Adrian Blackhawks varsity squads hosted the conference leading Osceola Indians for two WEMO Conference contests last Friday night. The Lady Indians are ranked seventh in Class 2 and the Indians are ranked fourth. In the girls game the Lady Blackhawks fell to the Lady Indians 86-56. Three of the Lady Blackhawks scored in double figures led by Bailey Carroll with 14. Justine Enlow followed with 13 and Paige DeBrot added 10.

Rain, Sleet and Snow
A wintery mix from rain to sleet and then snow covered the area this past weekend, causing travel problems and the closings of schools, churches and many businesses. PWSD #5 attorney raises questions about water purchase agreement
Public Water District #5 of Bates County met January 8, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. Attorney Bill McCaffree reported that the City of Adrian plans for repaying the proposed loan on the water treatment facility update called for front loading the payments to the District for the years left under the current contract and then refinancing a balloon payment at the end of the current contract at a lower payment for the City of Adrian. Blackhawks tame Mustangs
In non-conference action on January 9, the Adrian Blackhawks hosted the Heartland Mustangs. Adrian opened up the contest and quickly held a 17-12 lead by the end of the first quarter. Seventeen was again the number for points scored as the Blackhawks went into the locker room at half-time holding a 34-20 advantage.The scoring remained close in the third quarter with Adrian holding the edge 16-14 and also the lead at 50-34.
Blackhawk wrestlers win at Lone Jack
The Adrian Blackhawks wrestling team traveled to Lone Jack Tuesday, January 9 for a make up meet from November 30. The Blackhawks did well and won the meet over the Mules 48-24.
Lady Blackhawks blow past Heartland 70-40
Justine Enlow and Bailey Carroll each scored 14 points last Tuesday night as the Lady Blackhawks blasted Heartland 70-40 to push their record to 5-4.
50th Wedding Anniversary -- Cushards

They are the grandparents of 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Opal Huffman leaves legacy
The late Opal M. Huffman, a former resident of rural Adrian, has left a lasting legacy to the Adrian School and to surrounding communities of Bates County. Prior to her death, Mrs. Huffman established a charitable trust for the purpose of providing scholarships to young people of this area for post-secondary education. On Wednesday, January 3, Trustees presented a check in the amount of $85,000 to Adrian R-3 Board Member Jim Ferguson, center, on behalf of the Adrian Education Foundation. The funds are to be used in the form of scholarships for the Adrian School District.
Auditor finds no evidence of misappropriated funds
The regular meeting of the Board of Aldermen was held Tuesday, January 8, 2007 in the City Hall of Adrian, Missouri. Mr. John Daniel, CPA, with the firms of Daniel, Schell, Wolfe and Associates, P.C., certified public accountants, presented financial statements and reports to the Governing Body from the annual audit it conducted on behalf of the City for the period ending 6/30/06. Mr. Daniel began his presentation with a review of the separate financial statements for the Adrian Manor Health and Rehabilitatation Fund.

Grapplers bring home gold
The Adrian wrestling squad traveled twice last week to compete in matches at Louisburg and then to Butler for the Butler Tournament. At Louisburg on January 4 the Blackhawks were competing in a double dual which included Butler and Prairie View. Then on Saturday, January 6 the grapplers competed in the Butler tournament. Tyler Bise brought home a gold as he went undefeated with a 5-0 record. Wyatt Jackson, 3-0, also brought home a gold medal after the tournament.
Blackhawks drop to 3-5
On the road to begin the 2007 portion of the schedule, the Adrian Blackhawks tangled with the Bulldogs of ElDorado Springs in a non-conference contest on Friday, January 5. The taller and quicker Bulldogs jumped out to a 20-11 lead and then led at the intermission 38-21. Adrian could not overcome the deficit and lost to their host 69-49.
