Bates County suicide attempt leads to critical injuries
Sunday, November 26, Sheriff Doug Mullenix, Bates County deputies and the Missouri State Highway Patrol, responded to a business on Route 4, Butler, in reference to a suicidal subject, at that location.The first deputies arriving on the scene observed a male subject seated in a chair, in the office, holding what appeared to be a rifle. As the deputies attempted to make verbal contact, they saw the man discharge the rifle, with the shot striking the subject in the face.
Blackhawks defeat Ballard Bulldogs in season opener
Basketball season is underway for the Adrian Blackhawks. It became official last Tuesday night when the Blackhawks traveled to Ballard. Adrian took command early and went on to sail past their host 78-21. The early season WEMO Conference basketball tournament is underway. On Monday night the Blackhawks were pitted against the Rich Hill Tigers. The two teams battled hard for a first round victory, but it was the Blackhawks that would prevail in a 54-47 score.
Lady Blackhawks win season opener 56-30 over Ballard
The Adrian Lady Blackhawks opened the 2006 portion of the new basketball season. Their first game came last Tuesday when they traveled to Ballard to take on the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Blackhawks were led by Justine Enlow with 14 points in their 56-30 victory. Jennifer Bremer was leading scorer for Ballard with 10 points.

Huell Julius Bracher Sr., age 71 of Raytown, Missouri died Thursday, November 23, 2006 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. William Kenneth Corbin 1941-2006
William "Bill" Corbin, 65, Adrian, MO, died Friday, November 17, 2006 at his home in Osceola, MO. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, MO, officiated by Pastor Vernon West, Creighton Baptist Church. Burial was in West Point Cemetery, Amsterdam, MO.
Buford M. Pettus
Buford M. Pettus, age 77, of Lakeville, Pennsylvania, died Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, PA. Born in Butler, Missouri, he was the son of the late Augustus Lee and Vauna (Bradley) Pettus. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 11, 2006 at Teeters' East Chapel in Hawley, PA with Reverend Teressa Sivers, Pastor of Lakeville United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in the Lakeville Cemetery in Lakeville, PA.
Steering committee formed to solve Adrian Manor crisis
Several employees of Adrian Manor and others held a march from the nursing home to City Hall prior to the city council's meeting Thursday night.In an effort to get things back on track at the Adrian Manor, an organizational meeting was held Thursday, November 16, 2006 at the facility. Scores of people were in the lobby while the meeting was held in the Community Room.
Adrian Chief of Police receives commendation
Adrian Mayor Cindy Kendrick presented Chief of Police Charles Chapman with a framed certificate citing his efforts during the robbery of the Adrian Bank. The certificate stated:CITY OF ADRIAN, MISSOURICOMMENDATION Whereas, Chief Charles Chapman is the duly appointed and acting Chief of Police of the Adrian Police Department; and, Whereas, Chief Charles Chapman was responsible for the successful investigation of a recent robbery of the Adrian Bank.
Letters to Santa
As it has been a tradition, The Adrian Journal will once again assist good little girls and boys this year in getting their list of Christmas wishes to Santa Claus at the North Pole. Children are invited to send or bring their letters to The Adrian Journal office for publication as Santa will be reading the paper to make a final check on Christmas wishes. Jr. High boys move to 2-1
On November 14, the Blackhawks hosted the Drexel Bobcats. The Blackhawks played tough defense and moved the ball well on offense. Coach Tenholder said, "We improved on our defensive intensity and our aggressiveness on offense. Overall we worked better as a team." The Blackhawks beat the Bobcats, 38-20.
Jr. High girls pick up win number three
The Adrian junior high girls picked up win number 2 by defeating the Drexel Bobcats 45-5. Drexel came out playing a strong man-to-man defense and gave the Blackhawks an early scare. The Adrian girls adjusted to the pressure and scored 20 points in the first quarter. At the half Adrian led 31-5. The second half saw all 20 Blackhawks on the floor, adding 12 more points, holding the Bobcats scoreless to secure the win.
New Arrival--Jaylee Marie Goss
Jaylee Marie Goss arrived November 13, 2006 at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas. She weighed 7 lbs. 7 oz. and was 14 1/2 inches long and has lots of dark hair. Jaylee is the first grandchild of proud grandparents Benny and Shirley Goss of Adrian, Missouri and Charles and Jeanette Singleton of Independence, Missouri.

Vehicle pursuit ends near Clinton
A nearly three hour car chase that began in Lawrence, Kansas and ended near Clinton, Missouri passed through Drexel and Adrian. The suspect's vehicle narrowly missed hitting a truck and an SUV at Co-op Road and US 71 Highway.Pictured: The white van that was pursued for over three hours by authorities was brought to a quick stop when a patrol car forced it into a concrete barrier on 13 Highway just south of Clinton, Missouri. The subject, Brendan Callahan, 24, of Lawrence, Kansas was taken to the Henry County Jail.
Suspect in Adrian Bank robbery arrested
Chief Chapman was informed that Adrian Bank robbery suspect, John Hall, had been captured by the Joplin, Missouri police. The man was pulled over by a Joplin police officer and when Hall could not produce a driver's license, he was handcuffed and his car was searched. A firearm was recovered along with a t-shirt he wore at the time of the Adrian bank robbery.Chief Chapman is planning a trip this week with agents from the FBI, to go to Joplin to interrogate Hall.

The Patron Awards Art and Craft Show will be held at the Old City Hall in Butler, Missouri on November 17, 18 and 19. The show opens to the public at 10 a.m.
Mules have the kick to take Blackhawks out
Monday night football found the Adrian Blackhawk fans on the road to Lone Jack. The Blackhawks traveled to meet up with the Mules in the Class 1 quarterfinals. Lone Jack put the game away in the final two minutes. Weismeyer scored from four yards out with 2:07 left. The Mules failed on the extra point try leaving the score at 14-6. Adrian finished the season with a 7-4 record. They won the WEMO Conference and the District and Sectional Championship. Pictured: Andy Still leads the way for Brice Peel against Lone Jack.

Imogene "Jean" Davis, age 81, of Lamar, passed away at 1:13 p.m. Thursday, November 9, 2006, at Barton County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 11th at Milford Christian Church with burial in Howell Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at Daniel Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to Milford Christian Church Building Fund in care of Daniel Funeral Home.
November 2006 Election
The November 7 election brought out a huge number of voters. Amendment issues and several contested races spurred the public to exercise their right.In the county sheriff's race, Incumbent Doug Mullenix, Republican, was declared the winner over the Democrat candidate Gary Martin. In another county race with competition, Donna Gregory, Democrat, received the nod for the Bates County Presiding Commissioner. She was challenged by Republican Jim Wheatley. The county courthouse tower restoration received a thumbs down as voters soundly defeated the one-half cent sales tax.
Plane makes emergency landing near Merwin
Sunday afternoon, November 5, Adrian Fire and Rescue, the Bates County Sheriff's Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol and other Bates and Cass County Law Enforcement and emergency personnel, including the LifeFlight helicopter worked together in a Mutual Aid response, to locate a small airplane that had reportedly gone down in an area west of Adrian. Searchers found the airplane in a farm field on the area of 11001 Road, about a mile south of Missouri Highway 18. Both parties aboard the aircraft were uninjured. Mechanical problems caused the unplanned set down.
Police investigating burglary
Tuesday, October 31, Officer Doug Thacker took a report of a burglary and theft from 200 West Seventh Street Terrace. Approximately $8,000 to 9,000 in jewelry was stolen from the residence. Police Chief Charles Chapman asks that if anyone saw anything or anyone suspicous between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., near Seventh Terrace and Mulberry, to call the Adrian Police Department at 297-2121 or call 297-2106 and leave a message.

Blackhawks are Conference and District Champions
The Adrian Blackhawks are celebrating! Rightfully so. After starting the 2006 season 0-3, the Blackhawks fought and scraped their way back to finish the season 6-3. The Black and Gold captured the Western Missouri Conference title and the District Championship with a 35-15 victory over the Appleton City Bulldogs last Thursday night on the turf of Vernon W. "Prof" Welch Field. The Blackhawks' win placed them into the state Class 1 playoffs. They hosted the Lockwood Tigers on Wednesday, November 8. (See complete story next week).

Sherrif investigates shooting in Passaic
Bates County Sheriff Doug Mullenix, along with Deputies Jack Bearce and Rick DeBruin were called to investigate a shooting in a RV Park in Passaic Monday morning. Eldon Deanie Carroll, who lived in a trailer at the campground at business 71 Highway and Route F, was found dead of a shotgun wound to the chest.
Skelton visits Adrian
U.S. Representative Ike Skelton and a caravan of Democrats toured Bates County on Saturday, October 28. One of their stops was in Adrian at Wimfield's on Main where he spoke with constituents.

Blackhawks blemish Whirlwinds; assured share of WEMO title
After trailing the Whirlwinds for the title of the WEMO Conference, the Adrian Blackhawks assured themselves at least a share of the title crown by defeating Archie 33-22 last Friday night in Archie. Lady Blackhawks come close
In the semifinals of the Class 2 District volleyball tournament at Higginsville, the Adrian Lady Blackhawks nearly knocked off the number one seed, St. Paul's of Concordia. They came out sluggish in the first game and soon found themselves in a deep hole. The Blackhawks lost to their opponent 25-13.
