Bates County Sheriff Sid Shippy, 57, of Butler, died Friday evening, February 17 at the Mayo Clinic following complications from heart transplant surgery. The surgery occurred December 8, 2005 at the clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

A man died Wednesday, February 15, 2006 after leading authorities from three counties on a chase down US 71 Highway.

Adrian wrestlers placed 7th as a team at the state tournament this past weekend. Out of the eight wrestlers that qualified, four of them brought home medals. Tyler Bise, 38-0, was the state champ at 152 pounds. He is Adrian's first high school state champ.

The Lady Blackhawks traveled to Drexel last Thursday night for a WEMO Conference battle with the Lady Bobcats. Adrian lost a 51-48 heartbreaker.

On Valentine's Day, the Adrian Blackhawks traveled to Drexel for a WEMO Conference clash between the black and gold squads. The Blackhawks won the match-up by defeating the Bobcats 67-49.

Stevie Kuhn, Senior, and Cody Knuth, Junior, at Adrian High School, were selected Annual Tea Queen and King. Annual Tea contest is based on personality, poise, character, manners and the ability to answer questions in a small group environment.

Harold Eugene Francis, 82, of Independence, Missouri died Friday, February 3, 2006 at the Adrian Manor Nursing Home in Adrian, MO. A private family memorial service was held. Arrangements were under the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, MO.

Adrian City Attorney Max Gordon held a meeting to discuss the recent water contract that Public Water District 5 has declined to sign. The reason for the meeting was to squelch rumors circulating about the reasons District 5 refused to sign.

Adrian Fire Chief Gary Dizney, with the approval of the city alderman, has put a BURNING BAN in effect. Dizney asked that there be no burning until further notice.

The Adrian Blackhawk wrestling team will be represented at the 2006 Missouri State Championships this weekend. Eight grapplers qualified last week after finishing fourth or above in the sections held at Warsaw.

The 6th seeded Lady Blackhawks advanced to the semi-finals of the Cass Midway Tournament with a thrilling 43-40 overtime victory over the 3rd seed Midway Lady Vikings last Monday night. The Lady Blackhawks captured 3rd place in the tournament last Saturday by defeating the Barstow Lady Knights 63-69.

The Adrian Blackhawks defeated the Miami Eagles 68-55 last Wednesday in the Cass Midway Tournament. The win put the Blackhawks in the consolation game where they fell to Barstow.

The City of Adrian has been granted additional time to try and work out an acceptable agreement with Water District #5 to come up with a water treatment plan. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has agreed to give the city until Wednesday, February 22, 2006. If there is no workable plan established by that time, Adrian will be pulled from the 2006 loan closing.

The Adrian Blackhawk wrestling squad traveled to O'Hara and scored a 48-24 win over their opponent. Then on Saturday, the bus left early for a trip to compete in the Raytown South Wrestling Tournament. The highlights there were Tyler Bise holding on to an unbeaten record in the 152 lb. class and Travis Williams bringing home the gold in the 215 lb. class.

The Adrian Blackhawks traveled to Appleton City last Friday and spoiled the Bulldogs Courtwarming with a 63-50 victory. It was the Blackhawks first WEMO conference win of the season. On Tuesday they hosted the Archie Whirlwinds and dropped a 64-54 WEMO conference game.

The Adrian Lady Blackhawks continue to struggle and lost their second WEMO Conference game of the season last Tuesday night to the visiting Archie Lady Whirlwinds 74-44. Friday they travelled to Appleton City, where they won, 47-37.

Officials and first responders from Bates County and local jurisdiction met Thursday, January 26 to further discuss 911 in Bates County. The followup meeting addressed many concerns brought up on January 11.

Police Chief Hershel Cole took a report last week about a fraudulent door-to-door magazine salesman. He advises that if anyone is contacted by a door-to-door solicitor, they should immediately call the Adrian Police Department.

The Adrian Blackhawk wrestlers won two dual meets last week, defeating Holden 56-15 on Tuesday and K.C. Center 54-18 on Thursday.

After a win over the Lone Jack Mules, 59-55, and a loss to the top seeded Archie Whirlwinds, 60-47, the Blackhawks met the Drexel Bobcats in the 3rd place game. Adrian defeated the Bobcats, 56-36.

The Adrian Lady Blackhawks lost to Barstow in the consolation bracket of the Archie Tournament on Wednesday night. The fell 43-34.
