Water District # 5 turns down water contract
The Adrian board of Aldermen held a special meeting Thursday, January 19, 2006 to continue discussions regarding several city water issues and other city business continued from last meeting. The City Council voted to approve a water treatment plant contract 3-0, and signed it immediately. Water District #5 held a meeting Thursday evening and the board voted not to accept the contract.
Vision 2007: MoDOT explains improvements
The Vision 2007 planning committee met with representatives from MoDOT Thursday, January 19, 2006. The meeting centered on MoDOT's role in the Main Street improvement plan.
R-III school expansion put on the back burner
One of the topics of discussion at the Adrian R-3 Board of Education meeting Thursday, January 19 was the increase in the student population and the aging of the school building and what to do about both.The school architects brought plans to the meeting but no decision was made at that time. So, the building issue is on hold, according to Superintendent Doug Hedrick.
Lady Blackhawks fall in first round of Archie Tournament
The opening game of the Archie Invitational Tournament featured the Adrian Lady Blackhawks against the Lady Vikings of Cass-Midway. The Monday night matinee was decided by a score of 52-44 in favor of the Lady Vikings. The Adrian Lady Blackhawks took of the Lakeland Lady Vikings last Tuesday night and fell 58-44. Turnovers were the downfall for the Lady Blackhawks as they turned the ball over 21 times.
Varsity Boys lose tough battle to Osceola Indians
In what was one of the most exciting games so far this season, the Adrian Blackhawks came up on the short end Friday night against the Osceola Indians, 64-47.

Home destroyed in Sunday fire
The home of Glen and Colleen Portzen on AA highway, three miles northwest of Adrian, was completely destroyed by fire Sunday, January 15. Crews from Cass County, Drexel, Garden City, Rich Hill, Butler and Amsterdam were called for support.
Candidate filing ends
The filing period for city and school board candidates for the April 4, 2006 election ended this week. Filing for office of Mayor: Cindy Kendrick, North Ward: Hank Stark, South Ward: Mark Lovelace, School Board (two seats): Jim Tenholder, Jay Bagby.
Last second shot gives Blackhawks 62-60 victory
The Adrian Blackhawks won an exciting basketball game last Thursday night at Barstow. They won the contest 62-60 on a last second shot by Josh VanSlyke, moving their overall record to 4-5.
Lady Blackhawks lose in overtime at Barstow
The Adrian Lady Blackhawks travelled to Barstow last Thursday night to play the Barstow Lady Knights and lost 55-51 in overtime.
Adrian wrestlers place third in Warsaw tournament
The Adrian varsity wrestling team traveled to Warsaw Saturday, January 14 where they placed third as a team. They had three 1st place (Tyler Bise, Wesley McDonald, Wyatt Jackson) and three 2nd place winners (Coty McDonald, Justin Hough, Jason Vinson).

Council hears report on proposed contract with PWSD #5 on new facility
The Adrian City Aldermen met January 9. Discussion and reports were heard on the proposed contract with PWSD #5 to share in the plans of building a new water treatment facility. The Aldermen have slated a special meeting to be held January 13 in hopes to have a new contract with District 5.
Rich Hill teen escapes injury in Bates County accident
A Rich Hill teen escaped serious injury in a single vehicle accident in Bates Country Thursday, January 5, 2006. The driver fled the scene on foot and was later apprehended.
Wrestling team takes 3rd in Butler tournament
On Saturday, January 7 the wrestling team traveled to Butler for the Butler varsity tournament. Adrian took third place. Tyler Bise and Wesley McDonald finished first and Justin Hough and Jason Vinson brought home silver medals.
Lady Blackhawks fall to Holden
The Adrian Lady Blackhawks traveled Holden Friday night to play the Lady Eagles. In the non-conference game Adrian fell to Holden, 47-30.
Koster and Cooper applaud MoDOT's efforts to save bridge
Sen. Chris Koster, R-Harrisonville, and Rep. Shannon Cooper (R-120) applauded MoDOT for their decision to replace the South Grand River Bridge on Route 71 outer road in Archie and save it from permanent closure.

Goddess statue put in place
The east side of the Bates County Courthouse square was blocked off Tuesday morning, January 3 in order for construction crews to place the Goddess of Columbia at her new resting place.
Price of first class stamp is going up
Effective Sunday, January 8, 2006 the price for first class stamps will go to 39 cents, up two cents, while the postcard rate increases from 23 cents to 24 cents.
